Slap!!! (That's for complaining about a score on the north side of 6!)

Better.

I think free studies are a double edged sword, the standard is so much higher which pressures scores down a bit but also the shere number of entries mean that people thumbnail vote and only view pictures that they are interested in so kind of keeping some of the low scoring out of the bag.

Thats the only explanation of why my picture of ajdsfa;dsgha dsgih ;fdkg is bumbling along quite nicely at 5.0

Don't assume. And if people are thumbnail voting, they're probably doing it just so they have a starting point now and bump up/down later. It's hard voting in a free study challenge when you go through the images one-by-one from the start.

True true, still I'm ejoying what I thought would be a 4er bumbling along as 5er even if it plumets in the next few days :-/

The really cool thing about free studies is that you are putting your work out there with hundreds of other wonderful photo's and it is a challenge to keep a score above a 5.5 with so many people voting.
So far my photo is holding it's own and has even went back up from the 5.7 it was sitting on yesterday.
(I don't usually have this kind of luck).
With 5 days to go anything can happen........And usually does.

I guess time will tell.

Sigh. For all the time and effort I put into this place, you think I'd get a little love back, but no... none at all.

My shot is NOT a 5.1 shot. I know everyone says this. And most times when I get a 5.1 I'll eventually concede that yeah, it's a 5.1 all right. But not this one. For Pete's sake (even though Pete didn't have a darn thing to do with it and has not yet favorited it) this is AT LEAST a freakin' 5.3 shot! So go give me some love, people, or I'll delete all 28,000+ comments!! (Granted, that might take awhile...)

Sigh.

Ah feel yer pain...but remember, if your entry scores around 5.5 in a FS, it's pretty much a 6.0 in any other challenge! :-)

I wonder why is that... Why people are so harsh on something that, as the name says, free.

Between this challenge and the straight challenge

a) The voters have pretty much brought their torches and pitchforks
b) Those same voters have left their bag of comments at home.

Yes. 140 or so votes (between the two entries) and not one comment. My images are either so mired in mediocrity that they are not worthy of comment or people are just sleepy and don't feel like commenting.

eta: The voters are also bouncing up and down on a trampoline. At least that's what my votes look like.

Dangit. My overall average just keeps falling. I'm starting to actually, truly get a little irritated. But I must remember that the voter, bless his or her heart, is always right, and I have failed.

Bah. I swear I will try for "WOW" next month. I won't get it, but I will try. (walks off, whimpering...)

I don't get it? I love voting on free studies. So many high qualify images. Took two days for my first pass, no 10's on my first pass, I go back & bump my votes ending up with half dozen or so tens every time.

Stats: You have rated 399 of 400 images (100%) in this challenge.
You have commented on 7 images (2%) in this challenge.
You have given an average score of 6.0351.

Have you tried large amounts of alcohol?

It doesn't make your score any better but it's fun trying.

No, but I am sorely tempted to find my ration card and purchase cigarettes.... grrrr.....

No. The voter is not always right. The voters seem to get mean at free study time. Haven't you noticed that free study scores are usually not any higher than regular scores? That just doesn't seem right to me. The free study images are usually better and stronger images than the challenges and the scores should reflect that. I don't think an image should drop .5 just because it's entered in free study.

10/02/2009 04:02:45 PM · #172
Hmmm. I've only voted a little under half on the FS so far - average vote given is 6.3. On the two open challenges, both voted 100%, average given was 5.7 and 5.8.

So I'm doing my part.

And yes, no matter what, the voter is right - it is their vote and they can cast it as they see fit. Photos end up with the average they end up with. No such thing as underrated or overrated - just rated.

Not mean, just evaluating differently. There are many people who use the 1-10 scale as a ranking system, rating all the entries against each other and coming out with an average vote of around 5.5. They feel that is the correct way to do it and what matters is the ranking, not the vote. Others will rate the shot on it's own merits and averages handed out in freestudies tend to be higher.

Mine is pretty high so far in this one.

You have rated 39 of 400 images (10%) in this challenge.
You have commented on 9 images (2%) in this challenge.
You have given an average score of 6.7692.

Well done!! I know I've been harsher in the past, and that definitely won't happen again. I found myself thinking, "this is a free study--they should have fixed this or changed that." It's quite stupid of me to think that it's fine to have flaws in a challenge, but not in a free study. I just figured that challenges were very limiting and you had so much more latitude in a free study to be able to do things right.

And I promise this is my last post in this thread. But y'all really do suck.

(Just kidding. Needed to vent a bit. Not kidding about the last post in the thread, though.)

I am now convinced it is only a 5.1-worthy shot. I still like it. Quite a bit, actually. Good luck to all!
