And another 1! So that is two scores of 1 in a row, without comments. :( freakin trolls.

i've written to the sc before asking if they could set it up so that any vote of a 1 or a 2 would have to accompany a comment ..
there would be less than 1% of images i've ever seen that would warrant a score that low ..
and then you see the most amazing photographs with 1's and 2's ..
IT SHOULD BE ILLEGAL .. LOL .. !!!

What YOU would give a 1 or a 2 isn't what someone ELSE would give a 1 or a 2.

I don't understand why people a) don't understand that or b) don't want to understand that.

But..... I've just been through and scored all of the images; I have to say that the entries in this Free Study are the best I have seen since I have been a member. Given that 5.5 is the mid-point score for any challenge, I now think my 5.32 places my image exactly where it should be in this challenge.

I do not understand why someone cannot: a) realize that at some point the actual quality of a photo DOES mean that by ANY actual standard it should not be getting 1's and 2's and b) realize that they are not the "all knowing and ever seeing" person they think they are

Still no comments, please leave a comment if you leave a low score...I would really like to know what is wrong with it, besides the things I see already.

I would gladly trade points for well thought out (ETA: either complimentary or critical) comments. I got a great comment from Tom ( teafran) that made up for the vote of 1 I got shortly after it. His comment totally contradicted, in a positive way, the 4 word comment I had gotten to that point.

Dont ever be afraid to leave a comment. The few people that have a problem with it so outweigh those who appreciate it. I actually got a comment from someone who completely and totally didn't get my photograph, and it's probably one of the most useful comments I've ever received. By his comment, I realize that's probably why my score is so low--it's not that it's a bad photograph, it's that some are probably thinking that I took the shot because I didn't have time or patience to wait for a better angle. I took it because of the angle. It is very helpful to be reminded that not everyone sees things the way you do.

These voting comments are interesting and seem to be a constant feature in the voting ocmment threads.

Just out of curiosity, on a rainy day last week, I went through about 60 challenges on a random basis using 25 images per challenge as the data base just to view how the voting patterns worked.

What I found was very interesting - on average, voters who comment on images score 1.973 points higher than the average vote on a per challenge basis (it's the only way you can look at it) with a general average vote of 7.239 per image.

Voters with cameras generally voted, on average, 1.1 higher than the average vote.

Non-camera owners, on average were below the average for any given image by .7 per vote.

It would seem that those to do comment, tend to look much closer at the imagery and properly evaluate what they are seeing giving proper weight to all aspects of the image rather than just an impression.

If I were the (small g) god of the DPC universe, I'd weight the system towards the commenters - say a 1.5 to .75 weight seems to be a good concept (to me anyway) with the comment vote weight being based on a minimum word length of twenty words. You can say a lot with twenty words. :>)

With that kind of weighted system, I think you'd get a little more realistic voting patterns than the general averageing system in place now.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it. :>)

Tom

I think there is no need for weighing of scores, since these tendancies affect all entries. In my opinion the system in place is fair, one must just keep in my mind that you need to please the masses. All about averages. If some kind of weighing system is used, your scores might be better, but everyone else's would be too.

Holding fast to 5.2.

Obviously, some people have poor taste. :>)

Hey - it started, just like the Tree submission, in the low 3's - it briefly hit 5 and started right back down. Very interesting - to me anyway.

I'm not complaining - my stuff isn't to everyone's taste (well, truthfully, probably 98% of them anyway)and I completely understand that - it's a niche area of photography and generally populated by wierdos - like me. :>)

No worries.

I call a flat 6.0000 a "dead fish", because it just lies there; not good, not bad.

Right now my entry smells like carp. :/

Heh, I reached the midpoint. It seriously doesn't bother me though. The voting public and I rarely agree anyway. I've reviewed and voted on a portion and I'm kind of disappointed myself. Nothing higher than an 8 so far. Off to find more. :~)

I decided not to monitor this challenge with the normal "reload the score every 5 minutes". I'm happily surprised to see a jump from 4.6 to this after 24 hours.
