Some of you may have noticed, though most of you wouldn't have, that I ran a mini comment experiment during the March FS.

The experiment was inspired by the creative comments that K10DGuy dishes out during free studies, and a comment that millsa made following a previous FS, or perhaps even the Hidden Gem challenge... he mentioned that he'd notice a common thread running through many of the images, and that it might be interesting to link them into a story... so, it's all millsa's idea... but anyway... I thought it was a great idea and took it upon myself to give it a go... at least small scale this time.

So... after I'd complete voting on the challenge, I went about trying to find an image to start with... I picked one of my favourites from the challenge...

there was no obvious next image when I started (in hindsight, this was perhaps an error... but alas). Then I just wrote. Found another image that allowed the story to follow. Wrote. repeat.

I made sure I commented about the photo itself... conscious of, though in complete disagreement with, criticisms by some of K10DGuys comments and that they're not necessarily "helpful" (what tripe!)... so, I always began with a comment, then added an explanation of what I was doing, and then I wrote the story... with a link to the previous and/or next chapters (more like paragraphs) in the story... knowing all too well that the recipients of the comment might know the previous and/or next image, but not the story... at least not until voting on the free study had concluded.

I did get an encouraging PM from one of those had received a comment... thank you salmiakki... and all recipient have marked my comments as helpful... thank you all.

What I did find from this little exercise is
a) my creative writing skills have atrophied somewhat since my A+ in year 12 English (1990) - [ETA: for the final creative writing essay... I got a mark MUCH lower mark in the subject overall]
b) K10DGuy is brilliant at what he does
c) K10DGuy is brilliant for doing what he does
d) It was lots of fun
e) A bit of planning next time might allow the story to go a little longer than 7 short paragraphs

I hope to give it another go next month (time permitting), and think it would be interesting to see other people attempt similar story threads.

It's even given me another idea... this one my own... that it would be interesting to see the story created by commenting on a photo and passing that comment and the photo to another person to continue the story, who then sends their section on to another, repeat. Like those communal writing exercises in high school... come to think of it, I did something like this with a bunch of bloggers... ExitPageLeft... a Group Fiction Blog writing exercise... which only exists in the archives kept by "the elders of the internet".

Anyway... just wanted to explain myself to anyone that received a comment, or stumbled upon one of the comments while viewing the images used, and thought "What The!?"... one such person being andrewt who left a comment on my FS entry "...Also waiting for your thread on the commenting experiment that you did from one image to another.". Also wanted to thank you all too... especially those that inspired this experiment i.e. K10DGuy, millsa and the creators of these wonderful photos

Cheers.

Excellent work!

I hope you continue in the future. I dabbled a couple of times with writing my comments in a way that they tied two photographs together, but never more than that! I always thought it would get too confusing, but of course, didn't open my mind to actually explaining in the comment what I was doing. hahaha.

I'm semi-retired in my commenting now, having burnt myself out a bit, but things like this show me that I'm at least being inspiring to some degree, so that's wicked awesome.

Love to see what you do next.

Cheers Vlad...happy my shot was used in the photo story...enjoyed the read...

Interesting how the characters started off in central Athens and ended up in Senegal and dead! : )

It's a also a good 'looking' exercise for someone to undertake.

Thanks guys. Wasn't as easy as I'd expected/hoped... but it was fun... and with some better planning next month, it might be a bit better a story.

Very clever, and fun to read. It made me see images again that I had forgotten, and to realize again that everyone finds their own meanings & stories in others' photographs. Thank you.

An interesting & entertaining read--good work!

The great comments here gave me an idea: you could create an April Free Study Storyboard thread as the FS voting begins.
People sign up in advance, during voting, so it is possible to vote & look thru the photos for possible story frames.
When voting ends, post the first shot of your choice & start the story with it.
Then, the story goes to the next person on the list of interested ppl. And so on.
I would sign up. How could anyone resist?
Then you would end the story with the photo of your choice & a stirring conclusion.
It would be fun!

Didn't realize at first what you were doing when I saw your comment on iraklis' photo. It is a lovely work, nicely celebrating the pictures and adding to our enjoyment of them. Nothing forced, just sweet.
