Maybe I'm just a jerk, but I've been leaving rather critical comments. I say what I like about the image and then what I think could be improved... I'm not really approaching this any differently than my usual commenting except that I am being more to the point at times because I am trying to get to all 1,128 of them. |

Well, now I have a few. By far, the best comment I ever received - on any image - is among them. |

Nope, you're not being a jerk at all, I don't think. And I'm in awe of your goal to get to all of them! Just keep doing what you're doing - it IS appreciated! |

Personally, I'm looking quite forward to seeing what you'll have to say about my own photo. |

I loved your comment, it will help me to improve! It's exactly what I am looking for. Keep it up and ignore those who complain about constructive criticism. |

I've got 39 comments, and frankly, I never get tired of hearing "Lovely...." My score is a 6.28, so not super high nor in ribbon territory, but it doesn't matter to me! These comments are the best! |

Well, I personally think that a low score given without any explanation is much more of a bad vibe than a low score given with a comment that I can use to improve my work. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love all the positive comments I've received and would be overjoyed to get 20 more of them. However, I'd like to see the flip side as well.

Personally, I'd love to see a little more variety in the comments myself, but I'll take whatever people wish to throw at me as well.

I must have missed the memo about not doing normal positive/negative comments. I've been trying to comment fairly normally, though I admit to doing a little more "side-challenge glowing comments" than I usually do. |

I got a terrific comment from Bear_Music, without any bald* jokes! I shall have to take back some of the "hairy bastar--" remarks (so I can use them again, later ;-)
Seriously, thanks Bear!

Only because it ribboned. With 5 days left I think I will get more on this entry than the ribbon shot.
I have 30 comments now. This is awesome. thx to all who is putting in an effort to comment.
I have commented on 50 entries will continue to plug away.

After momma told me "life is like a box of chocolates" she said "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all". Frankly on some of these I've struggled to find something nice to say, but I always try to mix in something positive and since I committed to commenting on all the ones I get to I'm doing the best I can. Personally I would rather get constructive criticism than a higher score. Low scores along with "nice" comments don't help me at all. |

17 votes so far. Some get what I'm trying to convey, others just fixate on an element in the comp. Mostly positive though so can't complain. Will try to vote/comment on all but could take awhile! |

My voting philosophy to a T, and some people on the site have told me they use my comment/vote as a bellwether as to how well their shot is doing. All shots have SOMETHING good about them; don't ignore it, but yes, balance it out with constructive criticism. |

I have 18 comments so far, about half of which say something about the content and meaning of the photo, and half which say it's too blurry.
I think the "point" of the pre-challenge posts was not to prevent anyone from "commenting fairly," but more to remind people that, in this particular challenge, people were intending to submit photos which might have what are normally considered (at DPC) "technical flaws, but which have other redeeming features which make it the image the photographer would most like you to see, and to take that into account when looking at the picture, perhaps looking beyond its obvious characteristics and trying to discern just why the photographer chose that particular entry.
I know, with a record number of entries, it's asking a lot to ask people to slow down and study the images more than usual ... still, that doesn't mean you have to like them. :-)
PS: In high school, I was class champion of the run-on sentence, but I now see that those were just baby steps on the road to a questionable new literary form.

You're welcome in my portfolio anytime.
I'd extend that to my entry too, but you don't know which one it is.
It's important to remember that these might be very old pictures from a very long time ago, so there's an awful lot of learning that might not be displayed in the pic.
Personally, I'm not likely to learn a whole lot new from a critique on shooting technique because it was so long ago.
But here's what I did do recently: I chose the shot. I re-cropped the shot. I reprocessed the shot.
Those are things that everyone either did or had a chance to do. Therefore, I remind myself of that before commenting, so if I critique anything, I do it with those three things in mind. Likewise, anyone else could critique those three things and be helpful. |

I'm at 48 comments. I am happy with them. The very first comment blew me away though. The comment was within the first hour and the person commenting knew exactly where I took it. |

If you think someone is posting something which violates site rules, the proper procedure is to use the ReportPost button, rather than just posting a blanket accusation here.
I haven't read every post in these threads, but to be honest I haven't noticed anyone "blatently identifying their shots" ... |

Love to be able to help you there brother, but with 1132 comments there's just so much diversity left in this old brain.
I'm gonna vote on all, I want to comment on all. But....... there are some that I really don't know what to say....
Bunch of comments on mine, I don't look at scores, turned that feature off in 2006. Much more fun that way. It's just like film, when it develops I'll be surprised! Good luck everybody.
I hope I make the top 500! |
