I just love how a simple thread about "Who's going to be in DC for the inauguration? Maybe we can have a g2g!" can be turned in to another rant thread. It seems some people just can't stand to confine their opinions and arguments to just one area, they need to take over other people's fun too. Just sad. I've come to know people on DPC to have better respect for each other than this. Perhaps I was mistaken somewhat.

Relating to the actual topic: I won't be in DC, unfortunately. I would love to go (especially having never seen the DC area before) but unfortunately I wouldn't have the spare cash to fly or drive from here (Indiana) to there. :( I will be parked in front of the tv with some good friends though, and that beats crazy crowds and bad weather any ol' day, IMHO. :D

Get some good pics for the rest of us! :D Anyone know if we're having any kind of inauguration-related challenge? I think that would be interesting, both for the people that are going and those that are staying home.

I'd definitely say History was made here. Definitely.

Wait a second. I know a lot of people involved in this planning. Obama isn't spending the $140 million for his inauguration. That is the estimated final cost. One of the reasons it costs so much - so many people will be there. Extra security, extra port-potties, extra cleaning crews, keeping the museums open to provide bathrooms and warm spaces, metro buses as warming stations for the crowds, etc. $45 million was donated. $50 million comes from the federal government. If hundreds of thousands of people weren't descending on DC right now to watch this historical event, it wouldn't cost so much. Obama isn't holding a party costing $150 million - people have created a party around him and the government has no choice but to foot the bill.

I think the general international feel is that it doesnt really matter who prez of the US is, foreign policy stays the same

I am pretty amazed by how this has turned into a rant. Anyway... Probably going to stop in Roanoke, VA tonight. Anyone have any tips on what to go out and shoot around there? Anyone who will be in DC on the 21st, PM me. Thanks to the 2 or 3 of you who have stayed on topic and given advice.

I really wish I could attend. I believe it is really an uncommon historical event. Even if he turns out to be a bad president a doorway has been opened that hopefully will never close again. I may not be able to attend but at least I had the privilege of being alive.

I hope those attending have the best of luck with their cameras but I also hope that they take the time to set them down and just enjoy the moment in time we are being given.

Cheers!

Oh and, let not trolls tempt you from under their bridges, cross quickly and do not look back.

Make sure if you are going to DC not to ask, "Do you know a good place to shoot from?" lol. As for the ranting, I'm sorry, but shut up already! If you want a place to talk about how you hate where our country is heading or say ugly things about our new and past presidents, then make your own thread in the rant forums instead of hijacking others just to get a reaction. Anyway...I cannot attend (a little far from California) but I will be celebrating the inauguration, which is also my half-birthday (lol), at my friend's house where we will be hosting a small "Obama Party." I will also be TiVo-ing it at my house and will also take a few snapshots of our little party.

edit: spelling

yeah they have been talking about that a lot. I don't think it's going to work personally. People are going to have different cameras, different image sizes, most likely different color casts because of inexperience, and potentially different focus. Plus they want each person to take a wide angle, medium zoom, and full zoom and then submit it in email, but they are only allowed to put one photograph per email. I really want this to work but it seems like there are too many variables.

has anyone downloaded this yet?

I'm fascinated by it. By the effort. By the amount of coordination, planning, talent etc. Surely they have PP peeps who can pull it together, but they won't sleep for days. Gonna keep an eye on it. If I could, I'd be emailing in 3 shots!

I was thinking it'd make a great SIDE CHALLENGE!!! [ETA] NOT downloading PhotoSynth, but taking a month's worth of shots of something that changes slightly, like the morning sun thru a window & then put it all together into a time-lapse slide show. [eta] whoops! did I hijack this thread? At least I'm not ranting!

Well I made it. It was quite an experience. I will post pictures of the trip when I get back home on monday. (Still have to drive across the country again.) It was very crowded and they had know idea how to get 2 million people out of there. We tried to leave at first and then gave up and went to the air and space museum. Once we rested and ate the crowdes had dispursed and we made our way out. Overall I am very glad I went, but will skip the next few and watch on tv.

"...this is a metric error. They're comparing apples to orchards.

When they cite the Bush inauguration cost as $40 million, they're talking about the cost of the inauguration parties - that is, the cost of the festivities themselves. That cost does not include security. It does not include the cost of paying police to shut down the city streets. It doesn't include the cost of cleaning up after the crowds. It's just the cost of the parties.

The Obama figure of $150-$160 million includes everything - police, security, setup, and cleanup.

A fair comparison? If you exclude the security costs, Bush's second inauguration cost $42 million; Obama's is expected to cost around $45 million. If you include the security costs, Bush's second inauguration cost somewhere around $155 million. (The exact figures are still not public knowledge; Bush and company treated it as a "national security matter" which did not need to be disclosed.)"

Thank you, Ryan. I figured it was something like that.

Since one of the prolific thread lockers zonked it on the other thread and it probably disappeared, you might want to take a look at the original that can be zoomed a bit more and also shows the whitehouse.

//specials.washingtonpost.com/inauguration/satellite/

Centuries from now alien visitors scratching dirt from our forums will wonder: Why would anyone lock a thread. :)

Sorry for being both prolific and a thread locker... we just make an effort to keep similar discussions in single places when possible. :)
