speaking of change, Alaska re-elected Ted Stevens

That will just enable McCain to get him kicked out so Palin can appoint herself as his replacement. Last I heard he was only ahead by about 4000 votes with quite a few left to count -- has the election been certified yet?

Just my $.02 but I'd consider going from Gov to Senator a demotion?

As for Stevens, I hope people were voting to keep the R in office and not for the man! Can you be in the senate from jail?

Also, pretty pathetic for the guy running against him! Your opponent is going to jail for stealing money on the job, and you still lose to him! Fail!

Not as bad as John Ashcroft being beat by a dead Mel Carnahan here in Missouri. Mel died in a plane accident a few months before the election and Ashcroft lost anyway...ouch.

Depends on if you want to control the people of one state on the border with Russia and Canada, or try to control the lives of a whole nation.

People seem to forget that the Legislature is supposed to SET the policies, and the Executive is only supposed to "faithfully execute" the will of the people's representatives.

Probably depends on the state quite a bit. But you are right, given all the campaign rhetoric from the McCain/ Palin campaign, it will be a difficult backpedal for her to use this as a catapult back into the limelight.

There's better shopping in D.C.

What a strange thing to have in a statesman and the ledaer of the free world.

I voted for him because he gives me hope.

My sentiments exactly! I just get the feeling that he really cares. He thinks before he opens his mouth.

Just to clear up a few posts above. The governor of Alaska does not have the power to appoint empty senate seats. Alaska solves this with a special election. It's likely Stevens will resign now having given his party a little extra time to prepare for such an election. Of course he may not in which case he faces expulsion as a real possibility.

I have a friend who used to be very involved with the Democratic party here in Chicago a few years back. One day, back in 2002-3, she was in the Democratic headquarter stuffing envelopes (or something) when a man walks in asking to see someone there. âHas anyone ever told you you look like Barack Obama?â she asked. âI am Barack Obama,â he replied, to which turned bright red with embarrassment.

Last year she was standing in a line to meet the senator during the campaign. As he passed her and shook her hand, he stopped, looked at her and said âI know you.â After pausing and thinking a moment, he said âYou think I look like Barack Obama.â

It's ability like that which makes a politician. I can hardly remember a patient I saw two hours ago.

As an only semi-related anecdote, my brother went to the store in suburban Seattle with his barely two-year-old daughter. The checkout guy was black (Kirkland is roughly 2% african-american) and Scarlett proudly exclaimed in a loud voice, "It's Barack Obama!!!" The guy took it in stride, but only from the mouths of babes...

Dude, you don't know the fear I face when someone stops me in the grocery store and says hi. Instantly I wonder what sphere they come from. Work? Church? Kids? I hate it. Damn my scatterbrained mind!

I hopped online to play Halo last night after the acceptance speech and had to listen to racist remarks like this as well, people are idiots.

This is huge. IMO we've been fed a horribly misguided notion that terrorists attack the U.S. because they hate our freedoms or our way of life. As Bin Laden himself noted, if that were true he would have attacked Sweden. What Islamic militants really hate us for is the very thing WE fear from them: a growing fundamentalism that has made us suspicious and intolerant of others. A threat. This election alone, this single act, is a more devastating blow to terrorists than a thousand cruise missiles. With this one act, America demonstrates that its ideal of freedom, equality and tolerance is not an empty promise, and it strikes at the very heart of the fears that divide people and allow radicals to recruit suicide bombers.

...and then there's California... :-(

I sincerely hope you are right... but I think you are wrong. I don't believe their hate of us will abate one iota. I think that they will see Obama as weak and this will embolden them. I sincerely hope I am wrong.

Wow, that was some astute commentary by Mr. O'Reilly. It's like standing in the driveway listening to a boring neighbor.

Or the conservative gasbags here in my office. Why do people think that simply because we share a profession that we must share political views.

I've heard comments like: "Obama's an a$$h0l3." , "Looks like the property values in DC will drop, you know what they say, 'There goes the neighborhood.'" , "There will be fried chicken and watermelon on the menu at the White House now."

WTF? Granted, most of this came from one individual, but it makes me think that some Americans have a bit further to go than others. :(

I'm just glad that everyone's gone home for the day and it's quiet.

Racism is still alive and well but took a huge kick in the gut yesterday. That is definitely one good thing to come from this election.

Don't forget Florida, Arkansas and Arizona. They also passed anti-gay marriage/adoption initiatives on Tuesday.

He has proven the biggest thing ever: he united the whole nation...he got people thinking about his ideas and capabilities first and then about his skin color. He didnt boast around like a bully only to hide shamefully in a huge defeat later. He won hearts.

And if that isnt an achievement for you, my friend, you gotta go back and attend those civic classes again that you probably flunked in high school.

Case closed.

Winning an election is a great achievement; however, it hardly makes you a great leader. You only have to look a the current President for proof of that.

I'm excited. I'm hoping that Obama is the greatest ever. The one thing I am not is a sheep who automatically gives him a free pass just because he's replacing the schmuck we have in office now. I've seen brainwashed Republicans that thought Bush could do no wrong for the last eight years. I am not interested in seeing brainwashed Democrats do the same thing for Obama.

Ok.. thats great. But at least give him a chance. Or would you rather stay in the cave and close your eyes to what is actually happening around you?

ETA: And by the way, I never said that winning election alone is an achievement. Nobody could gather hearts so profoundly before.. certainly not the current prez. Hell people laughed when he got elected... and the ones that cried, certainly not out of happiness.

Where did I say I wasn't giving him a chance?

When you call an unproven elect a great leader and refuse to compare 2 Black Panthers standing at a voting location with nightsticks in their hands to some redneck making idiotic racist comments it's pretty obvious as to who's in the cave.

Prash, listen. I know it's exciting and wonderful and interesting and hopeful that Obama has won and history has been made and things have a chance to be on a really good path right now, but I've been following this thread, and you are really coming across as just as forceful and opinionated and stubborn as the people you are trying to fight against. You are taking almost everything someone that isn't a die-hard Obama fan says VERY personally, for no real reason.

Fight the good fight, but don't become the thing you're fighting against.
