I think the main problem here is interpretation of the meaning of contrast! Do we take it in a literal art/photographic sense, or in the sense of the word, ie: things which contrast like hard/soft, dark/light, sharp/blurred. It's a difficult one, and very individual. I am sure it's all a valid learning curve, and will take whatever is thrown at me, have a look at it, and then decide if it's valid or not. Opinion though is what really counts, and this is why scores vary so greatly ( well other peoples do, mine just sticks on 4) lol, Beauty after all is in the eye of the beholder, one man's 10 is another man's 1.
Mandy (contrast?)lol

contrast
noun
the state of being strikingly different from something else, typically something in juxtaposition or close association : the day began cold and blustery, in contrast to almost two weeks of uninterrupted sunshine | a contrast between rural and urban trends.
ΓΆ€ΒΆ the degree of difference between tones in a television picture, photograph, or other image.
ΓΆ€ΒΆ enhancement of the apparent brightness or clarity of a design provided by the juxtaposition of different colors or textures.
ΓΆ€ΒΆ the action of calling attention to notable differences : use knowledge of other languages for contrast and comparison with English.
ΓΆ€ΒΆ a thing or person having qualities noticeably different from another : the castle is quite a contrast to other places where the singer has performed.
Challenge: High Contrast III (Jun. 4th 2008 - Jun. 10th 2008)
Rules: Basic Editing
Submissions: 291
Voting Deadline: Jun. 17th 2008
Details: Use high contrast to create impact in your photograph.
No doubt the DNMC Police will only consider light/dark & use of contrast sliders as the intent of the challenge, but it seems to me to be much more open that that....
(I have no entry in this challenge)

OK - THERE IS AN ENTIRE THREAD for you all to argue about what contrast is and who thinks its whatever and who cares? -- this is supposed to be the SCORES thread -- or is there some confusion about COMPARING YOUR CONTRAST SCORES? (ALSO there are PREVIOUS CHALLENGES TO GO LOOK AT FOR EXAMPLES OF WHAT HIGH CONTRAST IS - SO GO TO THE ARCHIVES IF YOU ARE CONFUSED AND KEEP IT TO YOURSELF AT LEAST IN THIS THREAD PLEASE?????) can we pleaseeee move on ? :) thank you! *steps off of my little milk-crate soap-box doubting anyone will pay any attention to my one- small voice*

and as soon as this challenge is up you'll be able to see why this upset me so much, but out of all the defintions I read before entrying into this challenge, not one said white or black HAD to be in my picture to make it contrast lol. So I really wasnt sure why this person decide that was the comment they wanted to make on my picture. Also half of my picture is actually all white?!?! |
*sigh*. Contrasting colors definitely count in my books. A red square on a blue background is quite a contrast for example. I REALLY wish people would be at least open to the idea that there might be other interpretations. Unfortunately many voters feel that if your interpretation doesn't match theirs then it is wrong. Back to the scores...

The other thread that Love6 has pointed out is here:
//www.dpchallenge.com/forum.php?action=read&FORUM_THREAD_ID=786787.
Now if two people would be so kind as to add two more votes (lets say 10's for sake of argument) I would be at 100 and I could post my century mark results.

False. *WE* are the voters, and it's simply not possible to win a ribbon unless the vast majority of us agree that the entry met the challenge (whether it meets your particular definition or not). Every once in a while we get validation requests from somebody claiming that nearly all of the entries failed to understand something (either rules or the topic). Riiiiight... everybody's wrong but you. :-/ |
In truth, THIS is false. There are many examples of ribbons and tops 10s not meeting the VERY objective and spelled out terms of the challenge -- where the only "interpretation" is in the imaginations of those who do not wish to comply with the terms or go through the oddest mental gymnastics to claim they did in fact meet the challenge. Just because the voters voted for it as an excellent image should NEVER be misinterpreted as an acknowledgement that it actually met the terms of the challenge. To do so is foolishness.
Many here have claimed that they vote good images high whether they meet the challenge or not.

ouch that hurt. doing the math told me that your last vote was a "2". a photo averaging over 6 does not deserve a 2 vote, IMO. |

It takes a 2.00 to bring a 10.00 down to 6.00.
According to you, a 6.000 average only deserves 6.0 votes.
