Uhoh, the clock drive on my telescope mount doesn't seem to be working....NOOOOOO!!!!

Haven't had the damn thing out in a loooong time, Pacific NW is a tough place to do astrophotography unless you like images of the famous "Washington Nebula" (i.e. overcast clouds)
I have another idea for an entry though, we'll see....need some clear skies though

Got my dark sky site programed into my GPS have all the gear and remote power. I have my target set and tomorrow night god willing I will get the shot/shots for the challenge. Don't think I will be able to compete with jlanoue or Pascal but I will get something on the sensor! :-)

The ESA/ESO/NASA Photoshop FITS Liberator v.2.2 This is a photoshop plug-in for processing deep space images. It is kick butt and FREE! There are also free stacking applications such as deep sky stacker. Thought these might help for this challenge.

I'm dying to enter this challenge but there have been clouds every night this week. And the Clear Sky Clock is forcasting them for the next 2 nights as well. :(

I did not realize that the rules allowed for stacking. That's cool.

I've been wanting to enter this as well, however its been really hazy here lately, the sun is out, its hot and humid, however.. there is a steady...haze of clouds covering the sky giving the day a hot cloudy feeling sort of feel. Which in turns affects the night sky : /

Well, got my shot, I think it didn't come out too bad but we'll see how it does...

By default, as raish pointed out... it's pretty much never completely "night" there right now.

HAHAHA well then explain these: And this is just the Larus collection...

Those are PRECISELY why I went with Partners. :)

No.

Oh, and I'm in at entry # 26. Looks like it might be a super small challenge!

Spent hours over 4 nights trying and got squat. It was visually stunning but photographically crappy. No entry but I learned what not to do and that I need more expensive toys to pull it off. Oh well the learning curve continues.

May I suggest for "Partners" the telescope and its instruction manual? :)

I am feeling the need to point something out due to a comment left on my entry.

Sunsets do meet the challenge as the Sun is a star.

Only if I see the sun itself to me.

Use the moon, stars or planets to create a photo that's out of this world!

It doesn't say that any of them have to be present in the photograph, merely using them within the desired effect, and I have used the Sun, as a star, to gain the effect of a sunset.

And you should have called the sun and sky "Partners for Life"... no wait, that's the other challenge. :)

For all those "Masks" whiners, I guess in this challenge, even though it says "Use the moon, stars or planets to create a photo that's out of this world! The visual impact of your image should be heavily dependent on your depiction of the night sky."

...we should consider that:

* In any sky, cloudy or otherwise, there are stars out there. It may just be their magnitude is eclipsed by clouds OR ambient city light.
* At any time of the day, it's "night" somewhere and we only have one sky -- so that sky is never just "day" or just "night" but a nice gradient between day and night at all times.

So despite the clever wording attempting to define the challenge, it's really wide open... so if there is no moon, stars, or planets "visible" we can imagine them because they are there, albeit hidden.

:):):)

Yes, the sun is a star. Did you miss the name of the challenge? Night sky?

You'll get some folks (possibly including me, depending on the shot), who'll go with you that sunset is night, but don't complain that people would call it out of bounds. As with all interpretations, the further you stray from dead center, the more likely you'll get hit by some folks. Nothing wrong with that approach; I take it myself pretty often. But I don't think it's right to push the boundaries and then complain.

Well to be quite honest levyj413 I'd rather some one rated it a 1, and said it DNMC after the voting, because I look at that comment now and it pisses me off that I know I'm within the rules, yet some one has taken it upon themselves to say it isn't.
