Again, wish I had something besides a nightscape to enter in this free study but I really only have four choices. I can enter something from my paw project, wich I have shown on this site before and I prefer not to do that. I can enter some photos taken at work, stil life for commercials wich will never score well here. I could enter some childrens portraits for christmas cards but I donīt want to do that as kidīs photos never score well and besides, I would always ask for permission of the parents first and not like I am going to call them up on the last day of the year for something as trivial as a challenge here. The fourth option is then to enter this :)

By no means I think this shot is all that great, far from my best nightscapes but I HOPE itīll score somewhere around my average, think itīs more likely itīll stay close to 6 though. I only got two chances to go out at night this month as either I was up to my ears in work or the weather was simply s**t, we got no less than 4 days wich were completely crazy and a lot of others wich had bad weather and trust me, we live in Iceland and donīt use the term s**tty weather lightly. Not much borealis going on here, they were pretty weak that night, you could almost not see them with your bare eyes. The moon was almost full so it lit up the foreground nicely and provided the hint of blue in the sky.

This is pretty standard editing, just raw conversion, darkened sky and brightened foreground with curves, cropped, curves for contrast and sharpened and added frame after resizing. Oh and this was one of the first photos I have taken after I turned 30, me and Indriði went out at about 9 pm on the 27th and this was taken about half an hour after midnight on the 28th.

Happy new year!

It would look boring.

Boring, pf - the Aurora Borealis alone, or even the landscape of Iceland, or the stars, none of those are boring (not for me anyway).

I was looking through the comments on this image and found some of the comments amusing on the fence. I studied this image when I voted long enough to see there was a gate - the track in the snow was a giveaway. Very nice image. I gave it a 7, which in hindsight was perhaps a bit conservative. The image can't be appreciated fully at this size. I guess it was mostly the 'darker' areas (but they're needed and would not matter 'bigger') and the frame that held it back for me - both very minor though. edit to add what I was originally going to say: the fence makes this - be a 'different' image again without it

Nice... I am not sure about the fences and tire prints up front. Distracting from a great aurora view with very nice mountain tops there. Maybe I would crop it a bit more :P

How did the vehicle get through the fence? Lovely image although I wonder how it would look without the foreground fence? :)
