Eh, typical, when I wanted to take it easy on DPC for a while, a night shot challenge came along... Couldnīt really pass this up but spent absolutely no effort on taking this on behalf of entering a challenge, I was going out anyway to take nightscapes so might as well throw it in the mix.

I could have gone with a more "DPC friendly" shot but I liked the composition of this one, all that (well technically isnīt really though) negative space and that little radio tower seemingly battling off a giant green space amoeba, thatīs what I see anyway. I also like the monotone color, the borealis were that strong and the only light in the shot (except the tower) that they color the whole scene green.

I am fully aware that some people seem to have something against aurora borealis shots seemingly based on on some principle, please, feel free to vote this down then. I really donīt give a **** and will continue to submit them, if people think I am submitting these solely to get a high score, thatīs their problem...

Post processing all very minimal BUT since nightscapes are inherently low contrast subjects I am used to making two TIFF files from a single raw file and mesh them together but since this is basic editing I used shadow/highlights three times with both strong and weak settings on both shadows and highlights and that led to the strong halo you can see on the left part of the photo where the hill meets the sky. Other than that, just curves, hue/sat to actually tone DOWN the green in the shot and used smartsharpen and unsharp mask to sharpen after resizing.

They are, quite simply, jealous. Jealous that they don't live in the land of endless skies, stunning auroras, mountainscapes and outrageously good-looking blonde/blue eyed women.

Quite frankly, I'm jealous too. 1 from me. :).

I don't get it. All the people who left negative comments about how tired they are of Nothern Lights shots... What is wrong with these people? How on Earth can someone get tired of something so pure and beautiful.

Get overyourself you neisayers! This is as good as it gets. The photo may not be the best technically, but it is still pleasure to look at! I'd like to see some photos of those who so negatively dismissed this shot.

Larus, please post more for the world to see.

I completely back you up Larus, in regards to submitting these types of photographs whether people have seen this type before or not. I dont need to back mine or his opinions as to why we feel that way, but if a photographer is able to capture such authentic beauty of the North, then nobody should stop him, no matter If he or any other person has done it before. Like the saying "2 heads are better than one" well Two(or in this case more) photos of such incredible beauty and expression of creativity are better than one.

Keep on Keepin' on
Jess.

excellent image, once again! i'm assuming that the scores of 1, 2, and 3 are penalty-votes. i wonder if those same voters will give penalty votes to 'cute kid,' 'water droplet,' 'pregnant woman's belly,' 'rusty railroad cars,' 'colored pencils,' 'sydney opera house,' ' macro of a flower,' 'portrait of an eagle' and it's companion 'face-shot of an owl'), 'hummingbird eating lunch,' 'macro of a grasshopper head,' 'some shot of an iguana showing detailed textures,' 'ripples in the sand within the desert,' 'dry dirt with cracks in it,' 'cactus sunset,' 'abandoned vintage car,' 'abstract macro involving drinking straws,' 'image of smoke' and so on. there is more to the art of this than just the subject matter, and i will continue to enjoy all of these images if they are well done.

HAH!!! Too many stars - that one cracks me up. Uh, yeah, larus, could you find a view with fewer stars please? LOL

Another great shot in an already amazingly strong portfolio. Nice work.

Beautiful picture. Too many stars; solitary figure too small / far away.

Although I'm a bit tired of Icelandic shots of the Northern Lights, I realize that's just because I've seen so many of them here on DPC. It's still a spectacular photo, and I'm voting accordingly.

As much as I'd love to chastise you for using such easy ribbon-winning material as the Northern Lights, I can't help but love this shot. :D Well done! Damn Icelanders... ;)

These shots will always win the nightshot challenges, almost seemingly unfair for any of us southy photogs. I accept the challenge though, I admit its going to be tough, especially with a 9+ from me. Damn yankees. LOL. GL.

Beautiful shot but the whole image seems too green. It just doesn't look realistic.

God...The second stunning photo of the Northern Lights in this challenge...One word

Envy...the fact that you not only get to see this but also witness it at first hand...and envy that fact that you have so much skill to capture it in such a remarkable way...

I'm guessing that this is going to battle it out with an Icelandic rival for the ribbons

Iceland is giving us a theme this week! Awesome sky. It's a pity EVERYTHING is green. Something artificially lit in the foreground would add some nice contrast.
