Very cool news, Jeanne! What bike ride is it? I'm looking forward to a bit more riding this year - didn't get in a whole lot last year. I'm even going to learn to like riding in the rain, I think. :-) Have fun, and congrats on the lovely comment from the video guy! Maybe you can take some stills to share as well.

I'm participating in a charity bike ride next month ... I was signed up to offer support to the bikers.
At the kick-off meeting I was asked by the video guy if I'd consider being his assistant. I immediately said "sure, BUT I never have really done any video work". His response was ... I've seen your pics and that's all I really need.
YEAH!!
And I'll, hopefully, get to see my three Vermont DPC buddies to boot. All's good!

Awesome!

Greeting, Team Suckers.

I felt the need to pop in and let you know that one of your members is really ... Cousin It. Or a reasonable facsimile thereof.

I have proof:

The good news is that she can be glamorized with a simple pair of hairsticks!

And yes, she did know I was taking these pictures, and there is no point in taking them and not sharing them, now is there?

aaahhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

granted, I knew the pictures were being taken, but it will never cease to be alarming to see oneself posted in a forum thread. :)

now all I need is a teeny bowler hat...

It's a 500-mile, one-week, bike ride to raise funds for Anchor House (a home abused children) in the central NJ, Bucks County PA area. This year the ride is beginning in Rutland VT and finishes (as always) in the middle of the local mall. Great cause. I actually rode it in 1999 and 2000.

Way to go Jeanne! Did video guy see your dpc portfolio?

Deb, you home from warm sandy places where things go boom yet?

Mild excitement here at Chateau Snaffles...Lily goes for the big operation tomorrow and *crossing fingers* by about 9:45 pm I SHOULD be the proud top bidder of a Nikon 18-200mm lens...and yes, when seller queried whether I was serious about the lens, I linked him to dpc and my portfolio, he was impressed enough to tell me how much I'll enjoy the lens...even though there was still some 14hrs of time left on auction! Just hope no last-minute bidders jump in and start to mess with my master plan.

Both Lily and lens will cost some $$$ but oh well they're worth it...

ooh just 3hrs 21 minutes now...

Dunno how much eBay experience you have, but you better have high-speed, and pay attention those last three minutes.

I hate the way nothing moves for most of the duration of the auction 'til the very last five minutes.

Thanks Jeb. Yes I am a total ebay newbie, joined yesterday. The seller did clue me in a bit and I am lined up to go next door to neighbour where he DOES have hi-speed so I can get in on the fray, hopefully get it without having to sell some of my own belongings to pay for it!!!

Susan, on the subject of Ebay, I found that you deicide how much you are willing to pay, punch it in, then turn off the computer. Some of these people use âshillsâ to boost price, and that can cost a lot more in a bidding war..

LOL! I was entry number 15, and I like it so it will bomb. I'm getting used to the 4's again. I shot it specifically for the challenge, but some might find it DNMC. Maybe I'll get a posthumous award or an OOBie for it.

With a pic like that to inspire me, you're damn right I'll have fun!

BTW thanks all for the eBay warnings and tips...I sat there waiting with my absolute top price (roughly $100 more than last bid price) in the box, and when my one and only rival showed up with a bid of only $10 more, I chuckled and hit the button at 2 seconds...so very happy can't wait to get it!

And hey, i've never been 'Sue'd' twice before lol!

Sara - those are wonderful! Thank you! I'll take a more proper look at them when I get home. I'm checking in from the airport in Bahrain. We got delayed 24 hours when our plane from Kuwait "broke" (thankfully, before we took off!) and we had to wait for another one. That meant we missed the connection to Frankfurt, so the airline put us up for a day. We're back to try again tonight. Plane doesn't leave until after 1 am, but we came early to "watch" the US Open playoff via text updates on the web. :-)

'Grats Susan on the lens! And I'll get to everyone's Cowboy entries when I get home, too - I look forward to seeing them.

Susan, congrats on the lens.
Sara, had to hide your post from the wife, she thinks we need more cats, and I think her Majesty Vanilla is enoughâ¦LOL.
So it goes I will never figure out the voters, I like my entry in âCrime Sceneâ which usually means a score between 4.8 and 5.2, but so far at 83 votes Iâm sitting between my best 2 scores, then again there are still 6 days for them to hammer it down..

Just paid for lens, now going stir crazy waiting for it to get here...

Awww love the kittypoos pouncing on each other...

Missing Lily terribly, she's at vet's overnight as she got spayed today...I asked if they could do me too at the same time.

They just looked at me funny. Happens a lot.

Anyway I have a priceless pic of Druli either celebrating or drowning his sorrows over Lily's absence...

About that wonderful lens:
"Just occasionally, the old cliches are still the best, and with the 18-200mm VR the phrase 'jack of all trades, master of none' springs immediately to mind. It's a lens which delivers somewhat flawed results over its entire zoom range; where it's sharp, it has heavy distortion, and when that distortion comes under control at the long end, it loses sharpness."

Which is from the conclusion to the review here.

It goes on to point out that it's a pretty damned handy lens with a lot of range and it saves swapping, etc. All of which is right. The VR really is useful, especially if your hands are losing their steadiness, which appears to be the case with mine. It pays to remember that just because you can reckon on a steady camera at 1/30 sec., things don't start moving around any slower on account of it. You get some neat blurs though :)

I'm only coming out with all this to save you being disappointed if you discover shortcomings to the lens. I dare say you've heard all this several billion times before... If you're anything like me you'll often go back to your primes for the sake of image quality, or for the sake of looking just a little less vast and bulbous.

For the sake of 'f/8 and be there', without buggering around to get ready to shoot, it's nigh on incomparable. Go to it :)

Hi raish, If you follow the links from here re the lens to the links associated with this site, I found 25 reviews on the 18-200mm that were all freakin' GLOWING. No way would I ever trust just one review, and the three people who responded to my thread on the most versatile lens for the D40 were unanimous. How often does that happen?

LOL Christian! That would make life a little easier, wouldn't it?

Well, Lily's home and she has made history at the vet clinic...just brougt her home, she is doing great, but got some hair-raising news from the vet.

They found something so big inside her, they first thought it was a kidney, then wondered if it was a resorbed fetus or possibly that she was a hermaphrodite and had retained a testicle.

It was a HUGE abscess (slightly smaller than a ping-pong ball) on her uterine horn. And when they opened it, it was full of pus, and in the middle of it was a tiny (about 1-2/8 of an inch) long piece of straw or similar. It'd been there awhile (long before I got her), if she hadn't been in this week the abscess would've burst about next week and she'd've been one very, very sick kitty with peritonitis.

And that teeny little piece of straw, I saw it and it looked just like bleached-out straw, could've been eaten or inhaled, who knows...but it's very likely the reason she stopped getting pregnant. Damn I forgot to take a picture of it.

Vet has never seen anything like it, had everyone else come around and look. As a result Lily has a slightly longer than normal incision, cause they had to open her more to take out the abscess, but she has been acting fine since getting home. Haven't seen her picking at her incision but have an Elizabethan collar if it's needed.

Ok excitement over, back on with my day...
