if you see a solid colored square... give it a 10!

The idea has merit.

Because of size restrictions, or maybe my monitor, I find it nearly impossible to assess these squares properly. And now at the other end I have to decide if my entry will be "helpful to the site" ( metatate). It's true that I have entered (occasionally) less than stellar photos just because I thought there were not enough entries, but maybe that is not so helpful as I imagined. Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear.

Yesterday I took this real photo of a real place -- it is unprocessed except for resizing. It is not a macro or a close-up of a small object (relevant EXIF data posted below**).

It is best to never assume (or ass|u|me as they spell it in medical schools) ... as with any photo, if you don't like something, the most helpful, simple and straightforward approach (to me) is to simply say "I don't care for pictures which look <insert_technique/style/effect> or which are of <insert_subject>" or something along that line. You needn't justify your tastes or opinions, but letting photographers know what factor(s) influenced your vote will let them take that into account the next time.

I have plenty of "Brown Ribbons" and I can assure you that all of them were sincere submissions which (IMO) addressed the challenge topic.

name probably has a big influence. Then there's the quality of the sharpening ;)

a current challenge has two black squares, but one is smaller with an interesting title: a far superior image.

Anything that contains an image :)

If you want to split hairs about an image of darkness, or what the back of a lens cap looks like, or the basic semantics of the word 'image' that's fine, but in the context of DPC is it really of any value?

Dunno. Do those all black and all white and all orange canvases hanging in MoMA have any value ?

I would like to see a challenge like this current show at MoMA.

That sort of nonsense gets DQ'ed around here.

Thanks for the link btw, love the site.

That was exactly my point - I guess we're both confused. I appreciate the all orange canvases in MoMA, the all white canvas in the play Art, and even some of the really off-the-wall Turner Prize stuff. I just don't see that DPC is the place for this kind of an artistic statement, when what we're all really doing is expressing our creativity through digital photography (or at least the vast majority of people seem to be). Blank "images" might have been an amusing statement once at best, but repeatedly is just dull. A real artist would be seeking new ways to express that vision, rather than the same old boring cliche.

This ain't MoMA, this is DPCâ„¢

Do they have an Emperor's clothing exhibit at MoMA?

It's right in the front -- didn't you see it?

BTW: I'm not sure who his current tailor is, but he drives a red Lexus ...

I remember seeing that exhibit about 5 years ago. 30 models on a catwalk, naked. Now that was art.

7 minutes well spent! Unfortunately that TV show (the American version of Creature Comforts) didn't last very long.

I should disclose the original reason I posted this â€Â¦ I was disappointed that my buddy justamistere came frighteningly close to a brown but fell short when beat . I expressed to him that he was "robbed". Meanwhile, scored higher than both and this guy lingered nearby - WHAT?! a macro hummingbird in the bottom 10!!!

I gotta say, I'm a huge fan of Marcel DuChamp who brought a signed urinal into an art gallery to push the limits of what we "call" art. But I'm still of the opinion that black or white rectangles make the so-called "brown" less meaningful and therefor should be used sparingly or not at all to make the world a better place.

All these black, white and gray squares.
Maybe someday someone will submit a nice
brown square. Um, come to think of it,
that might end up on the front page.
:-))

All those blank white or black or orange or whatever color images people post are so fuc%ing annoying. I laugh just because I think it's so stupid and the person who posts it must be laughing cause of all the stir they create. Only people who take art waaaaay too serious and have done waaaaay too much acid come up with bullsh*t interpritations for blank canvasas, but somehow they seem to find their way into every art gallery I've been to. My remedy for feeling better about encountering these types of "art" pieces is to laugh, get a little pissed that someone is probably making a buck or two off the image, laugh again, then move on to something worth looking at.
