Maybe images in challenges to should be watermarked at least for those who aren't logged in. Yes, registering is a free and easy process but a person who doesn't have prior knowledge about dpc may not consider it worth their time and energy stealing what they presume will be permanently watermarked images.. I don't know if that's a good compromise between those who want a watermark and those who don't..

Depends - fully clothed female on all fours on a sandy slope, photographing something relatively close range. Nothing overtly sexual or unsafe for work but to the casual shoulder surfer it might appear as a very lithe bodied femme with her very pert ass in the air. And me :)

I know that this will not solve the issue but I really wish that DPC would enable users to block "right clicking" on their images. I know that doesn´t stop anyone determined as they can still take screenshots but a whole heck of a lot of people do not know how to take screenshots so this would most definately stop a lot of it. I know I would restrict right clicking on my images if I had the choice. | I second Laruson that! |
No please.... It solves nothing and I have a lot of stuff on my right click menu that destroys the browsing experience (like EXIF reader, colour pickers e.t.c.). Plus I use back/forward a bit from that menu, so I have to hover off an image to get it to work... it's just annoying. If you can just remove the save image as from the right click then fine but it ain't the way it works. |
Disabling the right click, or removing save from it, does nothing to stop people from copying an image. Try it yourself -- all you have to do is open Photoshop or MS Word, or any of a number of applications, and drag the image from your browser into the other application. Simple as that. |
Not saying that you CAN'T stop it but you can disable all that with scripts. |
Well I think the most effective approach would be to overlay a 1x1 pixel transparent gif image over the picture and size it to the same dimensions. That way you would only get a 1x1 pixel image when you do "Save as" and drag into applications. But there's nothing we can do about Windows "print screen" and using an editing tool to crop the image but the majority are too lazy or don't know how to do that anyway. |

Or alternatively if DPC presented images within a flash app it would also make life that one step harder.

At the very LEAST each site that allows uploading of photographs should require the person uploading to verify that they are the rightful owner of the image, in my opinion.
That would at least stop the honest but ignorant abusers.
Even Wal-Mart requires that. *rolleyes*

Disabling right click is just annoying and not really a good solution to this kind of problem.
I'll be starting to put images online at 1,200 pixels long when my new website is finished. You might be even able to make a decent small print with that. I won't use watermarks either. But- I don't care if anyone steals it, they can go right ahead. My images are all over flickr, deviant art and other websites I don't even have an account on. I don't have time to track down every single one and I'd rather go take more images for people to steal than write threatening e-mails. I'm not losing any money by people stealing things, I'm losing money (my time) trying to track them all down.
No one is making money off of it and I don't find it unless I waste time looking. It's the internet, embrace it. I expect this to happen when I put things on the internet. If you are extremely uptight about it then hoard things away in albums because if someone wants your image, they're going to take it

That's what people thought when NAPSTER came out. Then they did the math. If you okay with it doesn't mean that other people are. I'm not a big seller so every penny I can get from a print matters to me. If someone is making money on my behalf then yes I will do what I can to stop it. I won't go out of my way to search everyone that does steal them but if I or someone else does and they tell me about it then hell yeah I want it stopped. Since you don't mind people stealing your images it's saying the same for a bootleg copy of your new DVD which if you want to send it to me for free I won't have to steal it later. :)

I do like what Hauxon said about the flash. Flash would not only speed up the site but it would make it harder to steal. ALTHOUGH I do have a program that steals flash so pictures for me would be a synch, but most don't know how to get them.

Could DPC not do a deal with someone like Picscout to offer the service to members at a reduced rate?
That way the tracking, searching etc is handled by a 3rd party. It only covers images posted on "commercial sites", but that is perfect for those wishing to protect their revenue. Personally I'd be really p)%^#ed off if anyone was making money off my photos, cos I'm not ;-)
As individuals you can sign up to the service if your portfolio is valuable enough.

I am lost why flash will speed anything up?? It will also add a lot of flash issues... there are still issues with flash9 & ie7... most people have one version or other installed now days but some still don't. SOME flash apps make taking the images easier.... particularly the ones with a visible XML file with all the details in one place :-) |

Is this Three In One shot a DPC photo? I seem to remember it is...
Will look through the site now to see what other DPC material has been ripped, suggest others do too.

I don't think I will have to worry about anyone taking my images. At this time I don't think I have any in my portfolio that one would want to steal. |

Sometimes these thefts can be amusing though. A couple of years ago, my au pair in Connecticut got an email from her friend in Brazil about a swiped photo on an Israeli web site that looked like one of "her" kids. It was this shot, just a few weeks after submission. :-/ |
