One of the common sayings is that the difference between pros and amateurs is how many shots they take. I've also heard and read that you should just shoot until your shutter finger falls off, because you never know when you're going to get something good.

So this thread is to show pictures you've taken that weren't really what you intended. Tell the story, too!

I have three.

1) This is the best portrait I've ever taken, and it was basically a lighting test shot. My daughter and I went through about 8 sets of 10 (I just told her when the shutter was starting to take a 10-shot series and said "go nuts"). This was a shot I took before we "really" started, just to make sure I had the exposure correct. Result: highest-scoring portrait and 12 faves (3rd most of any of my shots)

2) This shot was just me going outside with my then-brand-new Sigma 10-20 and seeing what 10mm looked like. I was going to toss it, but then realized it could fit into the "sharpless" side challenge going on then. Result: 3 faves.

3) For the Bits 'n' Pieces challenge, I had various ideas, and took some test shots. This was one of them. I was just seeing whether the lighting looked good - my hand was never going to be in my entry. Result: 3 faves across two edits

Omg, so totally this one!

We were at the fishing dock on a grey day. The fish weren't biting and I got bored, so was just playing around, testing out what my S2 IS could do with DOF. I wasn't trying to set up composition or anything, just looking at the guides and... well, shooting!

Second highest score and 21 faves, EASILY my most popular shot here.

Jeff, what a great idea for a thread, to see what's behind some of the shots, and to see that sometimes our "garbage" isn't :)

Ahh, there's that Seriously Six shot again! I never get tired of that one, I love that serious expression. :)

Because I'm still fairly new to photography, I've spent a lot of the past year just wandering around with my camera shooting whatever I could find. So I have a lot of shots that just sort of happened. This is one that didn't score particularly well, but I like it! I was trying to find something to shoot at night and having absolutely no luck when I happened to shine my light under this leaf and it's just lit up so beautifully that I started shooting it. There's something about the texture of it that I really like.

I also really like to go out and shoot in the rain for some reason. I just think the world is so pretty when it's raining. A couple of different times I've gone out in pouring rain, sat on the sidewalk and shot leaves as they float by in the gutter. I can seriously sit out there for an hour taking photos of the gutter, lol. My neighbors must think I'm NUTS, but for some reason it's an entertaining activity for me. I think leaves in the gutter are beautiful! Anyway, I never know what I'm going to get when I'm out there, but these two turned out particularly nice, I thought.

And for a non-leaf photo, this is one that was just a lucky shot! We went to a lavender festival and I was shooting the lavender but there were a lot of bees that kept getting in my way, so I started playing around with bee shots, just trying to see if I could catch one. I didn't realize that I caught this until I got home.

This is a great thread to showcase these stories, so here's mine.

Recently there was a huge Shreveport GTG (Bergiekat and I) for a Mardi Gras parade. Well with parade down time and some morning fog I took her out to the lake on Barksdale Reservation. I was carrying my camera off and on and just taking her around to the spots I usually go to shoot. I wasn't taking many, but more of being a guide. We headed to the dam side of the lake and I go ahead and grab my camera as we were going to be quite far from the truck. We were down on a dock, Kat's shooting away at the trees and birds on the water, I occasionally shoot, but we start hearing a loud drone. I look up and it seems thousands of ducks are coming at us. I snap off probably about 70 shots. It wasn't till Sunday night at 1150 server time that I actually look at my photos, pick this one out, basic edit and submit for the birds challenge. A new PB, most comments during a challenge, most favorites during a challenge. Man I love this place and the people who comprise the whole community.

Not in a challenge, not a great shot, but still a personal favorite of mine, and not planned at all. My daughter was walking past the stands with her drill team, and when she saw me with the camera, stuck her tongue out at me and I got it at just the right (or wrong) moment.

Absolutely this one

was taking a series of SP's but with this one I was positioned way too much to the right. In PP loved the composition very much, it turned out the best of the bunch :-D

As most of us who started out with film, when starting out a new roll you would click the shutter release a couple of frames to get the UNexposed (supposedly) portion of the roll front and center. Sometimes the roll would start out earlier than suspected and at the "00" negative position, you would get some really off the wall photos. Most were of your own feet, or someone else's rear end, but once in a while you would end up getting something extraordinary.

Once, while taking a series of shots at a school for learning challenged kids about 5 or 6 years old, I had this happen and caught a picture of a small guy holding a hose with running water for a cute little girl so that she could take a drink. Of the 5 or six 36 exposure rolls I took that day, this ended up being my favorite photo... as well as of the school principal. Although 6 of my shots ended up in the newspaper article, I happened to show the principal the print of the "mistake" I made. She had me enlarge to 16x20 and, as far as I know, it is still on the wall of the school, right where anyone entering the front door of the school could not miss it.

Most of my negatives (all of them of that shoot) were damaged in a fire a decade or so ago, but if I ever go back near there, maybe i will take a shot of the picture in the hallway and post it here. Unintentional maybe, but seeing it on that wall actually made me feel like a good photographer for the first time.

All of the shots here in this thread are wonderful. And memories have been brought back that I hadn't thought about in many a moon! Thank you all!

I was out shooting for the challenge, urban landscapes, and was doing shots of the city from a bridge over the river. When I got back to my car I took some from there and I did a 3 minute exposure as a joke. The result became my highest score yet and my first 6+.

Since this was a candid, it was very much unintentional. I was just shooting people on the beach when this girl happened to be walking waltzing along the shoreline. To make matters better she was wearing a deep black frilly dress... on a beach. Voila! So I took about three frames of her just dancing and upon review this shot came out where she appears to be walking just in between waves and the curve of her dress seems to mimic the curve of the water. Did not expect that to happen :)
