I have just completed my first side challenege and what an experience! You can see the post below that i made at the end of the slice of life challenege. I would just like to encourage any one who is a bit hesiatant or unsure to go ahead and join up there are several that have just started this month , you would be most welcome ;)
I just want to say thanks to everyone for a wonderful side challenege :)
I have gained so much out of this as a result of this challenge.....
I have recieved 400 odd comments in the last month! That effectively doubled my comments recieved in the previous 2 odd years I had been here! I really appreciate every comment given thanks to you all that commented
I made over 900 comments in this challenege I had made 400 in the previous 2 years!
I added 11 new people to my favourites
I added 15 new photos to my favourites
I had 1 of my photos faved
I had 3 people fave me
I felt like I made some connections with some people in the group i got to know peoples children, families ,pets and home towns and thoroughly enjoyed it
I was thrilled with the kind and encouraging words and the interest people took in my girls and my photography
I was saddened by the death of Lola
Got to know Katee very well!
Was traumatised by the sight of muckpond in his PJ's!
Have seen photos from all around the world and learnt lots of new things about those countries and their people
I have been awed by the amazing images that people have posted and loved the little stories that went with those images
I have appreciated the generosity of everyone who shared information with us
Saw cgino and snowflakejen develop very disticntive styles
I bathed in the warm glow of the great comments from the likes of sandyP, jutilda, roz, suemack, riversong, redjulep, patio127 to name just a few who faithfully commented on even my most boringest of images
Most of all I progressed from this

to this

Thanks to madbrewer for organising this
I do have to say I am going to miss Colleens cats!

Here here, Charlie! Side challenges are a great, fast-paced way to improve and stretch your abilities in shooting and processing. Great post and I love many of the photos you produced as a result of the side challenge. |

I can definitely relate to your experience. Before I entered the two B&W side challenges, I not only didn't get the whole B&W thing, I had never shot in it, and had no interest in doing so.
Now my 3rd best shot ever, and my highest scoring Free Study, and only 6+ Free Study score have both been B&W.
Thanks to DPC and the terrific folks that organize and host the side challenges, my world has lost some of its color......and expanded its beauty!
The Free Study:
My 3rd Highest score:
A personal fave from a B&W side challenge: [thumb]585348[/thumb]
Edited for fat fingers.....

Oh I SO AGREE!
Side Challenges ROCK!
I found out so much about myself and my 'style' during side challenges - additionally that's when I also felt a sense of 'belonging' once I got to know people through side challenges.
Joy your new images are SUBLIME! You should be SO PROUD!
Great post!

I love the side challenges, I just wish some of them would pop as 10 day or 14 day challenges. I always mean to suggest one myself but either forget or see it already proposed in a 30 day format. |

I agree that it would be more feasible for many of us if the time constraints were shorter. I'd be interested in a B&W 10 or 14-day side challenge!

The last one I was in I just ended up with a lot of Forked-up photos.
it was here: 30 days to FORK!
I ran out of time, but still had some ideas left.
Anxiously awaiting, "Forks the Sequel".
Oh, okay, not really so axiously, but I'll never look at a fork the same way again! :-)
It was fun and educational.

justamistere, LOL, maybe the next one will be "Spoons". I sure would like another of those 'no holds barred' challenges. Fun.
These 30 day side challenges sure do keep me shooting just about daily, but it seems to me that people who can't do it every day, can set themselves a different goal based on realism. Nobody worried about how often anyone put images in at least in the three that I've been involved in.
Forks were fun ...Black & White was hard - ...Quality of Light was, well, illuminating
I'll tell you about Water later on...

If shorter time frames are what you're looking for, check out the sweet and sour side challenge, it's just 7 days. Sweet and Sour Side Challenge

Charlie you totally rock IMO, and you have contributed so much to the recent side challenges, with amazing images and so many comments. I admite you and your wondeful spirit and also how you give of yourself to others and share your passion freely. I am so pleased you are helping me by running the Overlay November side challenge while i look after the Textures. Thanks heaps dear friend.

I absolutely agree that the side challenges are a great way to learn, even though I've only finished a fraction of the ones I've started. However I dare not sign up for one right now, my internet connection is just not up to it. I've just missed two months in the life of DPC because my connection (or computer, I'm not sure the cause of the problem) refused to show DPC at all. Even now, I'm getting all the forums just fine, but no pictures, so I can't even vote. Hopefully by December everything will be back to normal and there will be a side challenge which interests me.

I'll chime in to agree wholeheartedly. My first DPC friendships started during the Sep '06 self-portrait challenge, I made a few more during the Jan '07 version, then made a bunch more during the Feb '07 Where You live challenge, and then more during the recent (and ongoing) blur challenge.
Don't worry if you can't do 30. Do 10. Do 20. Do whatever! :)

It has been my experience that there is no compulsion to post a photo everyday.Maybe on the days that you do post a photo you comment on all other photos posted that day, that way there is no guilt associated with not joing in everyday. |

To further that a little.......part of the purpose of the side challenges *is* to take the pressure off, learn and develop new skills, meet your fellow DPCers and share your images, and most importantly, enjoy them.
If you can't post one up today 'cause you had the day from Hell??
No problem!
You want to rework and old favorrite and get some feedback?
Go for it, and you'll get comments and most likely an idea or two that hadn't occurred.
And most of all, you'll absorb a whole lot because during the duration of the project, you'll be sharing ideas, styles, and techniques on the same concept for a month/week, whatever......and that ends up making it kind of like an ever evolving workshop.
There will be people who will help you, answer your questions, and show you things you've never seen, and in turn, you'll end up talking back and forth with people who want to know how you did thus and so.
It's tremendously satisfying for all involved.
And......GREAT fun!!!
