Playing with one of my textures and a shot of my daughter that I took last night. I haven't decided if I like the overlay as it doesn't really match the mood and tone, what do you think?

PS, I'll mention again that if anyone wants one of my textures please feel free...PM me if you want the large version.

+ =

Copied overlay and pasted on top of original and set opacity to 54%.

Used magic wand to select black background, selected inverse and created a layer with just Mary. This layer was placed on top of the texture layer.

Made copy of texture layer and placed on top of all other layers and set opacity to 58%

Used eraser tool to with 12% opacity to gently erase around Mary's face.

Reduced size, sharpened, saved for web.

Edit: Suemac suggested desaturating Mary to match the overlay and I like this verion better, thanks Suemack!

You know, this isn't nearly as easy as it seems it should be. Not at all.

is there a how-to somewhere showing how to nicely blend two images like this? Mine seem to all wash out.

Just something that might help ... usually for me when I blend 2 or more images, the resulting image is sort of washed out like you say. It really helps to adjust curves (or levels) after blending.

BrianTammy asked how I created this and I thougt I'd just post here (I hope nobody minds)
I started with my original image and made a levels layer to brigten it a little. Then I used the channel mixer to desaturate the image but used a layer mask to erase the effect on the eyeball. Then I applied my first texture (dried, cracked mud) by making a new layer and setting it to colour burn. I used another layer mask on this layer to erase the effect from the eyeball. I then applied my second texture (a green industrial looking wall) and set it to soft light. Again I used a layer mask to remove the effect from the eyeball.
To finish off I used a new layer set to soft light and used a black paintbrush to create some vignetting around the edges and a bit here and there to enhance the already present shadows and some to dimish some bright spots. I then did a quick curves layer to enhance the contrast. Finally sharpened the image and saved for web.
*Note* Both of the texture layers have reduced opacity.
I know this is quite brief so if you have any questions please feel free to PM me.
