"Like" is not the word. We already "love" you and all your wonderful comments and beautiful photos and heartwarming stories. Welcome to the Team Suck family.

we're back. the beast is bionic - they drilled out his left humerus and put a rod in the whole length, with two screws top and bottom. he's feeling rather sorry for himself, but he's ambulatory and in much less pain. now we just have to figure out how to pay for it - $2,200! gah!

o, dunh. congratulations to all that warrant,a nd a proper welcome to shez! glad you're officially with us!

It's a shock isn't it, to have to pay for the treatment of animals? I am so glad your baby is feeling better now. I think we have spent almost $1000 for chemo for Barney this year. It sucks, but you love them, and you just do it... Hope his recovery goes well!

Glad to hear everyone got back safe and sound and your pup is on the mend - I guess you just have to keep him inside during lightning storms now. ;)

Wow, I've entered 3 more challenges! I'm in FS, Motivational Poster and Impressionism. My Fill the Frame is at a lovely 5.3 with some of the best comments (compliment wise) that I've ever gotten. Go figure...

Glad to hear the pup is doing fine Christian!

Welcome, Shez!

It was all I could do to put a sock in it and not shamelessly pander to you to join us.....so I just prayed and sacrificed a chicken........all right, a chicken sandwich.

And I didn't really sacrifice it, I just kinda ate it.

But welcome!

We can use the help.

I am in the punishment phase of the Speed Free Study side contest with my obligatory cliche shot, and I'm happy to report that by doing so I could be a contenduh in The BORING MEDIOCRE challenge!

For those of you not playing, the quintessential BORING MEDIOCRE score is 5.5648......I'm in the running!!!!

I have submitted an entry in the August Free Study that will probably do really poorly 'cause it was a last ditch effort rummaging through my August pics.

I almost wish I would have saved my Rural shot, but then it probably would have done worse.

I think the side challenges and projects are more fun than the challenges.

This month I get a crash course in B&W!

I've started to develop a taste for it......never much cared for it in the past, but some of the stuff I've been doing lately lends itself well to the medium.

Hey, I got a 6+ in the speed Free Study with my last B&W entry......who knows what'll be next!

I have three days off work for the first time in a while.....I think I'm going to treat myself to at least one date with just me and my Nikon!

Later!

Christian, I'm glad to hear your dog came through better than your bank account!

I am a Blackhawk virgin no more! And I even scored the prestigious hellhole seat for the first leg of the trip back home. The hellhole seat (that's what I'm told it is called) is the back right. That's where all the backwash from the rotors comes into the aircraft - it's incredibly hard to breathe there. I will process pictures later - got a shot of a civilian who got that seat after me. (I moved just as soon as another seat opened up.) The flight does a ring around Baghdad, stopping at each little camp to drop off and pick up. Flew at night last night, mid-day today. Gotta say it was a lot less frightening than I thought it would be, except for the part where we dropped what I'm assuming was chaff - lovely bright (and I mean bright) flash of white and green. And I have absolutely no idea where we were. That's another story with more pictures and I'll get to those later today.

The only casualty was my glasses. Somehow they came off while getting off the bird last night - either when I nearly fell out of the thing (it's a lot further down than I thought and it was extremely dark) or when I took off the helmet and vest thingies. At any rate, I'm pretty sure I won't find an optometry shop here, so I'm temporarily working the "blur" project in real life. I've requested someone back at the home office to order me a new pair. Should have 'em in a month or so. In the mean time, if everything I enter is slightly out of focus, you'll know why!

Christian, glad to know all things went well with the beast. I have a soft spot in my heart for the guy simply based on the way you share him with us in pictures. Give him a pat on the head for me, and tell him he's a good dog!

Conveniently, an Impressionism challenge has just begun :)
I hope you get your new glasses soon, and I look forward to those helicopter shots!

Absolutely. You enter more often than I do. It can only be a good thing.

I made the mistake of being very attached to my Free Study entry. It's currently at a 5.5, which I'm cool with, but if it drops to 5, I'll be very pissed off. Maybe I should turn off scores for the week.

Remember.......Free Studies are historically always judged more harshly.

If you like your entry, voters be damned!

I can't believe it - i had a great image for free study, i shot it at the beginning fo the month, didn't submit it early in case i got a better one later, and I FORGOT TO SUBMIT IT LAST NIGHT! GAH! I"M SUCH A FOOL!

Oh no, that's so frustrating!

You can change your entry an unlimited number of times before the voting starts, so I tend to submit stuff really early, then change it about 10 times later on, it's probably good practise just in case.

I kinda wish this photo was taken this week rather than a month ago :)

It even has the white circles everyone's been arguing about for bokeh!

Now that I am a member of team suck, I guess I have to give you an update on my scores.....
I hate doing this, especially when my score arn't the best, but I will do it, in the true spirit of, "that it sucks at the moment", and I don't think it going to get any better. When will I ever learn to put a good entry inro the "Free Studies".

Shez, free studies are meant for a submission that you like. At least that's the way that I look at it. I did indeed put in one that I liked, though with a bit more DPC "oomph" than my usual editing style. Oddly, it's doing OK. Never know with these things! But the key thing is - you should like it. Everything after that is gravy. :-)

I seriously wish that "baghead" comments weren't allowed - it's too easy to be snarky or rude when you're hidden.

Thanks Deb, and yes, I do like it myself, but I am not an expert re Expert editing, so did the best that I could. \
There are a lot of very good entries in this Free Study, so guess mine is where people see it, and thats ok, as I still like it, so I agree with you on that one.....
I am pleased yours is doing ok, and hope it keeps on improveing.
I seem to do my best images in side challenges, when the pressure is off.....

As promised - views from the helo ride. Though not DPC-friendly (freakin' harsh sunilight and all), these do give you an idea of the variety of things that can be seen in and around Baghdad, from palm plantations to rivers to people out shopping. Enjoy!

Great shots here Deb, and left you some comments.....

Deb - those photos are fascinating! Thanks for sharing them. The Tigris looks so wide - but maybe it's just that section? The 2nd photo that shows the houses is very, very interesting.

Glad you're back safe and sound - and maybe the helo ride was better than expected...sounds like you didn't get motion sickness?
