Deb, looked at the most recent pictures you put up those are great. I appreciate what you are doing for this country. Did you happen to be in the area that the President was in Monday to see him? Take care of yourself and keep taking pictures

This is kind of SPOOKY re the similarity of the number of votes at this stage, as they are exactly the same.....

Thanks! It's kinda nice to be able to share what I see. And no, didn't get to see the President. Didn't even know he was here 'til I read about it on cnn.com.

And Shez, I have 111 votes in Free Study, 114 in Motivational. And no more complaining about scores if you've got one that starts with a 6! (And a fav!!) :-)

Raish, my dear, I'm entirely too pedestrian to get most of your titles, but I do enjoy trying to figure them out after the challenge.

I'll have one in Impressionism that I'm pretty sure no one else will like much, but it's one of my favorites (this week) that I've taken here so far. I've already accepted that it may not score well. Then there's the whole thing about whether or not it actually fits the challenge... I'm not well-versed in what does and does not constitute "impressionistic".

I'm in for Bokeh with one that came together really nicely (I think) after hours upon hours of initial failed attempts at three others.

We'll see!.....8>)

ETA: Lookin' good in Motivational, Shez! Woo Hoo!!

Hey, people.....just look at the current portfolio shots on Shez's profile page......WOW!!!

It's wide open. The only way to truly be Impressionist is to be a painting from the 19th century, which would quickly be DQ'd on several grounds.

I've got three in right now, all under 5. True, consistent suckage, but I'm looking for a 6 with my bokeh shot. We'll see...

OK..... I finally got the message..... Thanks heaps Deb,
Now this is even more spooky.....
My entry in the "Bokeh" challenge, went through at exactly 1.11pm.....
Is this telling me something.....

I apparently really screwed up in the Free Study. The score is freakin' astronomical (for me, but not for a Free Study placement-wise). I had a shot I quite liked, but figured too tame for this crowd. Apparently it's very DPC friendly. Who knew? (Well, my DPL teammates knew - they're the ones that talked me into it, so I blame them completely for my faux pas.) My "Without a Net" is doing very well (and I'm very glad about that one) and my Motivational Poster is doing significantly better than expected given my lack of design/Photoshopping text skills. Maybe it's something in the water, which I drink a helluva lot of... At any rate, I nearly guarantee my Impressionism will suck big time.

And that line cracks me up every time I read it, Don - particularly the "which would quickly be DQ'd on several grounds."

I've got a bokeh shot that I don't care about, and a shot for impressionism that I like quite a lot. So I expect to do about 5.4 on the bokeh and 4.6 on the impressionism.

Greets, fellow suckers. I'm back in Kuwait and it is indeed much hotter here than in Iraq - mostly stickier. Lots more humidity. I'd conveniently blocked that, I think. And you may find this odd, but if it weren't for the occasional mortar round, Iraq is a nicer place to be. Better scenery, more activity, better food (more on that in just a sec), and better weather - or at least drier.

Food - the melons - watermelon, honeydew, and cantalope (sp?) are local in Iraq and they are the best I've had anywhere. Especially the honeydew! And since there are SO many people there, the dining facilities tend to have more stuff and more variety of stuff, assuming the trucks make it in. When they don't, you get pork egg rolls a lot of days in a row, but they're very good so that's not necessarily a bad thing. The plus side of food here in Kuwait is they have really lousy desserts. This is a plus because I eat far too many desserts in Iraq.

I do enjoy the people I work with here, though. It's good to be back if only for a short while. And yes, I know I owe comments - I'll get there. Maybe not today.... which reminds me.. one more quick story...

Air travel. You may think it's a bit annoying when you travel by air. Try it the military way! You go to the "airport" (and I use that term VERY loosely) and sign in with your desired destination. This occurred for me today at 0930 Iraq time. At about 1100, they had Roll Call - this is when you see if you got a seat on the next plane going to your desired location. I did indeed get a "seat" (and I use that term loosely as well). Woo hoo! Then you go back to one of the lovely waiting areas - most of which are outdoors under either shade netting or an aluminum roof, and one of which is inside a tent. No A/C and it's 110 in the shade. They do have water, but it's sitting outside - which makes it about the temperature of hot tea. At about 1:30 in the afternoon, they have you line up and wait to go out to the plane. This is wearing your body armor and carrying your helmet, as well as any gear you didn't stick on the pallet. Then you walk about a mile or two (not really, just seems that way) across the tarmac and board the aircraft from the rear. And that would be a ramp, not a set of stairs. Seats are bench-style along the sides of the aircraft. There is no A/C. We took off (with a Japanese crew and aircraft) at a bit before 3 pm. Best part of the flight is once you get to altitude it cools off a bit. That part is really nice.

So next time you're stuck waiting in an airport, don't sweat it - literally. Enjoy the creature comforts. Get a coffee and a muffin. :-)

Deb, you're making me appreciate all sorts of things, not just airports!

a moment to gripe, please...

Getting a low score on a photo that I love does not upset me. But every once in a while, I put in a photo that seems to have that vague thing known to DPC as "good technicals," a clear, obvious theme and a clear connection to the challenge. When this happens, something in me wants a good score, really wants it. And that's what happened in Bokeh. I got lucky and found a really beautiful photo in my "roll." The only weakness it seems to have is that it is a little cliched, but since when has that ever counted against a score at DPC?

But it's sitting at 5.2something, well below what other threads consider a boring, mediocre score.

Frankly, if I had the skills of e301 or boysetsfire, and submitted shots of as consistent a quality as they do, I don't think I could put up with the scores that they often get.

If I had the skills of either of those two gentlemen, I'd not give a flying tortilla what my scores were. :-)

But I do know what you mean. The most disappointed I've been with scores has been on shots I thought were really DPC-friendly and met the challenge well. Then I just submit something I like and let it score how it will and I get over it. On the other hand (there's always another hand - one wonders where they all come from), there are those odd challenges now and then where you submit what you're quite sure will be a mediocre score only to discover it does better than expected. Granted, that's rare. But nice when it happens.

David, you do very good work. It has a quiet gentleness that's often overlooked here. Glad to see it recognized.

Go David! Can't wait to see your bokeh photo!
And Posthumous, please don't fret over your bokeh score. I've been on the thread and seen that everyone's score is dropping like a sack of shiesse. I started with a dancing banana and am down to a, er, wilting banana.

Bokeh was a great challenge to view and vote on...even though I didn't get my entry in on time. Lots of beautiful images. I seemed to vote higher in general on this challenge than others. Good luck team Suck :)

Tonight I start a class in the history of cinema. After reading about Deb's airport ride, coffee and a muffin might be my pre-class dinner.

And I have two mediocre scores in free study and bokeh.
