Alright, so I gave my wife a list. It went from expensive to cheap on different things to get for my birthday. She went to the shop and got me a Sigma 10-20. I'm happy and gonna test it out today at a BBQ.
I am, however, getting a little bit of criticism from a friend saying I should've requested the Tokina 12-24. It was also on the list, but the shop keeper recommended the Sigma for a whole host of reasons my wife didn't understand. I didn't want to be involved in the process because I wanted to be surprised (And I was)...but does my friend have a point? Apparently sharpness and aperture seem to be it's downfall as well as the 'poor build quality'. It kinda sucks to hear that, but I wondered HONESTLY from those on DPC what they though. Good or bad...let me have it? |

Either way you're gonna be happy, the 10-20 is a wicked lens.
I went for the 12-24 basically because I'd heard the same things about the 10-20 with regards to sharpness and build.
Since getting mine though I've used the 10-20 on a number of occasions and it's a damn good lens... you can't go wrong with it!
Enjoy it! |

| Everyone who owns it is going to tell you its great. I'd bet your friend owns the Tokina or, at the least, does not own the Sigma. |

Neither lens is perfect.
I own the Sigma and am underwhelmed with its performance. Takes a lot more sharpening to get a reasonable result and the unusual distortion is hard to correct with normal tools.
I don't own the Tokina lens but intend to upgrade to the Pentax equivalent which has better lens coatings to deal with the flare and CA.

I have the Sigma 10-20 and I'm very happy with it. Someone commented about its sharpness, but I find it to be extremely sharp. I normally shoot it at f/8 and f/11 and its sharp as a tack for me.
Corner distortions are always going to be an issue of sorts on this type of lens though. You just have to watch out for vertical and horizontal lines in the corners...

I agree, have the Tokina and I do not use it faster than f/8. You can get away with very slow shutterspeeds with it (1/10), as long as nothing is moving much.

| ladies and gents...I went out today and used it for the first time having opened it at the BBQ I went to...and I was not happy. Barrel distortion like a mofo. Perhaps it was just THAT lens, but I was having a horrible time with it. I was so excited to. Came home, checked all my pictures and there wasn't anything good in the bunch. Got on my bike, the store clerk took it back and switched it for the 12-24 Tokina. Came home and started snapping away...moved outside, and snapped some more. All I can say is that it was a world of difference. The Tokina IMO out performed the Sigma by a looooooong shot. As soon as I get the time I will post comparisions of both, uncropped, unedited. |

| I find mine extremely sharp and a wonderful, strong lens...except I dropped it and it split apart like an egg in Kenya...bought another in Singapore on the way home. Haven't used it yet... |

Let's see the difference.
While they don't make the Tokina for my camera and the 10-20 was out of stock when I was looking to buy...I bought the Sigma 15-30 and was/am happy with it.

I went through the Sigma/Tokina choice a few months back and settled with the Tokina. I've never regretted it for a moment. It's the sharpest lens I have and it's built like a tank.
Glad to hear you were able to trade for one - hope you continue to enjoy it!

A little different, I was on the line between the Canon 10-22 and the Tokina. To this day I believe the Tokina is a certainly a better build & possibly a tad sharper (although has a little more distortion) BUT it don't do 10mm and I have used 10mm a LOT more then I thought, so have zip regrets. Have fun...... It's a crazy wide perspective and just plain fun to play with since you are SO close to subjects :-)
Edit: Oops, I see you swapped to the Tokina.... Forget about 10mm and enjoy the tank :-)

You probably already know, but if you do not keep the lense perfectly parrallel with the horizon then you will get (increasing amounts of) the distortion you saw. |
