My 2nd day entry:
This is not meant to be an interesting shot from a subject point of view - my goal is to learn to recognize how to see b&w "potential" in an image better, so this image is more of an exercise with that goal in mind. Thanks all,

Day 3
Today I worked on dodge/burn in b/w.
If anyone has any suggestions about how to make good steam images, I would much appreciate them.

Wow, there are some great shots already. I'm really going to have a tough time getting through them all. Wish I had the time to comment on more of them, but my internet connection is so damn slow.
Thanks for all the great comments on my image for day 1. I didn't have time to do anything today. Hopefully tomorrow will be a more creative day. I really want to get as close to 30 as I possibly can. |

CapeSail posted this B&W for Day 2 and I commented that I thought it could do with a little more contrast as the lower half of the shot tended to blend together
I asked if I could have a play with a small jpeg color original to give an idea of what I was talking about
this is what I came up with
the color original is brilliant as a color shot but the the light levels throughout the lower part shot were very similar and had a cool blue cast, which made it difficult to edit under basic rules because using the grayscale mixer tended to change to many things at once and made it hard to separate one element from another
what ended up being the most important thing I changed was, before I converted it to a basic B&W I warmed up the color temp to remove most of the blue cast, this allowed me to use the grayscale mixer on different parts of the shot
darker reds darkened the base only
darker yellows and greens darkened the sky a little
lighter blue made the top of the tower brighter and lightened the water
I also bumped up the general contrast
these adjustments still fell short of what I was looking at so I moved it over to photoshop for a good dose of dodge and burn :)
lightened the water and darkened some of the rocks and played with the sky, these were done on a single layer very quickly so they are a bit rough but you should get the idea... I was trying to make the image more 3D to give it depth.
a few of the other shots I have seen so far look either flat or muddy you need to try and separate the items with color so you can use a channel type mixer too change their luminosity or have strong light gradients to start with to make them pop
