I'm leaving tomorrow morning to my daughter's place. Question before I leave, we were to meet at 10 in one place (Benson, right?), but wasn't there something else earlier? Is that what DrAchoo is talking about? My daughter and I will be camping Fri to Sat night at the campground close by (I forget the name right now).

Yes 1000 at Benson. The earlier event is on the same day and hiking to Oneonta Gorge for those who chose to go.

Brian

Ursula...

DrAchoo was refering to this earlier suggestion. Because of the wading Oneonta should be considered challenging.

However, there are plenty of other great waterfall opportunities to visit before meeting at 10AM that are close to the Benson meeting place and require very little walking and are right on the old scenic highway.

You will want to take advantage of the early morning light if you plan to capture water motion shots. Also, the best lighting for photographing Multnomah Falls is late afternoon and sunset time and is worth you considering for the night before.

I'm learning about this outing late, but will make an appearance. I'll at least keep track of stdavidson...someone's gotta do it. I'll think of something to contribute food-wise as well.

Thanks for getting this all planned!

Looks like fas-ligand and I will be there for the GTG. It will be a fun group. I'm pumped about meeting numerous folks at the GTG who have so far managed to avoid me.

Time to get serious about an early morning meeting to take some waterfall and Gorge pictures. The sun rises early these days so there is plenty of time to do some serious photography before the official 10AM meeting.

Who is up for that? If you are let me know and we can organize a meeting time, place and itinerary.

An Oneonta Gorge hike has been proposed and it is beautiful and a great Gorge photo op but I'm unsure if that is the best idea because you have to wade and it is a bit of a hike to begin with.

There are other great photo ops there that could be visited early and not interfere with the main GTG. What is the official group photo safari going to be? :)

Anyone game for early AM?

Early AM? What's that? :D

Did you have any particular location(s) in mind?

How early?

Do you have a GPS? If so, do you know how to use it?

OK... Here is an idea for a nice little west Gorge early AM photo safari...

Meet before sunrise (sunrise is around 5:15AM) at Crown Point for some panorama photography.

Next, drive east on the scenic highway for these possible waterfall stops in order of occurance (all are near the road):
1-Latourell Falls (additionally its a short hike to Upper Latourell Falls)
2-Shepard's Dell Falls
3-Bridal Veil Falls
4-Wahkeena Falls
5-Multnomah Falls
6-Horsetail Falls

Probably could not hit all those falls before 10 and get all the pictures we'd want but could hit several for sure.

The best part is we could gather around and chimp to make everyone else jealous when we meet up at 10.

Could be perfect weather for Saturday... Currently predicted to be partly cloudy(Love those clouds!!!) and into the low 80s.

I would like this very much (getting up early and so on).

I will not have internet access after tomorrow morning, so I'll need to know by then where we're meeting. My daughter and I will be camping at Ainsworth State Park, arriving sometime Friday in the afternoon.

The Oregon State Parks says: "Corbett Exit 22 (East) is closed for the next three months. Crown Point and Vista House are still accessible via Exit 18 and Exit 28. Look for the detour signs along Interstate 84." Is this a problem?

Is anyone else camping in the area? At Ainsworth?

Ursula write down my phone number to bring with you.

(360) 913-0279

In fact all you guys can write it down if you'd like.

Hey Davidson I don't think we're gonna hit all of those and I'm not sure we want to because that's basically what we're doing after we all meet up at 1000. Of course this is what we'll discuss together at 1000 but, those who want to hike up a particular falls will ride together and possibly go straight to that falls. Others will do the stop on the road thing to each of the falls... etc. etc. But I like the idea of getting some shots from Crown Point around sunrise and whatever shots would be best with the morning light that we won't get after we all meet up.

Since I'll be coming from Troutdale where I'm staying I'd be up for Crown Point (if I can get my butt up early enough). Thought I would also throw in Portland's Women's Forum overlook. I've only stopped there once and thought it was a pretty good shot east to Crown Point. You guys and gals that live down there would know better which is better for sunrise so just post it here and I'll try not to ignore my alram clock.

At this point I may be able to do an early morning expedition, but not stay long at the GTG. The family is back on camping and want to leave in the AM.

Can you still meet at 1000 for a group shot after the morning run?

Sunrise... I guess I'd say the women's forum, because Vista House is going to be a better shot than just the hill from Crown Point. Might have a hard time getting a good sunrise, though. The sun comes up in the southern portion of the sky in these latitudes, so it's not going to be framed to get a "sun behind the house" kind of shot.

I'll talk to Jenn. It may be that I can stay for 20 minutes and say hi to people I know and meet the new people and then be on my way. I really wish I could stay, but fam comes first...

I have a question...I am thinking of also camping/tenting and coming down Friday evening/afternoon, that way I can attend the early morning expedition...I noticed that Ainsworth is first come first serve. If the sites are full up, how far east is Viento (also fist come first serve)from Benson?
05/30/2007 04:35:28 PM · #194
I am going to camp at Ainsworth, come down Friday early if I can. The site says check in time is 4 p.m., check out time 1 p.m....do you think it will be a problem finding a site though? First come first serve, and there are only 6 tent sites, and I am tenting it...

This is a great suggestion and think that would make as good a place as Crown Point to meet as long as folks know how to get there. We'd just make Crown Point the second stop.

If that works for people then I'd suggest meeting at the Women's Forum Overlook at - GASP! - 5AM. That way we can get setup to catch sunrise and if for some reason it isn't that good we could boogie on up to Crown Point.

Sounds good to me. I'll go to bed early Friday, no beer!

Don't know if you resolved your camping issue but be advised that Viento is quite a bit further east from Benson than Ainsworth. Viento is almost all the way to Hood River on the east side of the Gorge.

And the early AM part of the GTG would start on the WEST side of the Gorge east from Troutdale on the scenic highway, probably beginning at the Women's Forum Overlook.

Edit:
Oh, btw, GREAT landscapes in your portfolio!

Which is the way it should be. 10 to 20 minutes for a group photo and say hi would be perfect.
