Okay you used the "Chief" word.... so now I have to step up to the plate since (I just retired from the Navy as a Chief). I'll go through all of this thread tomorrow and tally up the who's, where's, and when's and post again with with at least what the majority is and put a deadline for more discussions. After the deadline comes up then I'll put out the information from the majority.
Expect the consolidation of information from this thread no later than 3pm tomorrow (the 8th).
Hope there's no offense to my taking the lead here.

Sheryll... if you need a guide I'll volunteer for that.
Only wimps use trails and I figure it would be just two, maybe three days tops before we come out on the south side of Mt. Hood.

Great...now just keep in mind I'm an old fat guy so give me some options that don't involve hiking Mt. Hood for crying out loud. Don't get me wrong, I get REAL motivated if I think there is a good picture waiting and you'd be stunned how far I'll hike to get a shot but I don't see me hiking steep inclines all day. Oh and my wife will probably join us if that's ok. LOL |

i ended up having to work saturdays, so i guess yall will just have to try to have a good time without me. =) |
What kind of fearless cool leader bails out at the last minute? That's not very cool Cristin.
Couldn't we do it on a Sunday? |
i'm sorry about that! =(
i'll have to be working some sundays too, but i'm not sure which ones yet--june 10th i don't think i will be--but my dad's a pastor, so that makes sneaking out on a sunday rather difficult, at least in the morning.
but a sunday afternoon i could maybe do...
jeez. i'm sorry for being such a flake guys. =(

No problem Christie I'll go through and try to figure it all out. PM me with anything you might have already put together for this gtg. You're not out of course because I will do whatever it takes to get the majority of those that want to go to this. If at all possible I'll figure out a way to make everyone happy.... Ha ha just kidding if I could do that then I'd be awesome. I figured out a long time ago someone isn't going to like it.
Anyway.... don't worry we still love you. |

You oughta be girlie! If you and Rianna don't come, what am I going to take pictures of? Besides, I've spent weeks practicing my new face plant move and now I'm not going to be able to demonstrate it for you.

Try. Girls can usually talk Daddy into just about anything if they try hard enough.

Okay people heres what I got after going through the whole thread.
LOCATIONS...
There were 9 votes for some sort of falls (one with anything except Multnomah because of tourist factor).
There were 3 for camping and jeffday offered his house in Rockaway 30 mins south of Haystack.
There were 3 for Rose Festival. (starlight parade weekend of 2nd or Grand floral weekend of 9th.)
One suggestion for Mt Hood, One for Punchbowl, one mention of falls via boat (and I might still be able to get the transportation for that if this is something we'd all like to do).
Three who would prefer not to or can't do long/steep hikes
And last there were a couple of mentions about Oneonta Gorge
WHO AND WHEN
There are 3 who specifically prefer the 2nd and 2 who specifically prefer the 9th.

If a decision had to be made today and we went with the majority then our GTG#5 will be June 2nd and I would suggest meeting at Benson State Park. It has a reservable group shelter where we could break into smaller groups to carpool from there and either go to different places or all to the same place. The group shelter is currently available on that day and would cost $41.00 total including access, deposits and all. That would be somewhere in the neighborhood of $2.00 each depending on who is able to make it. Benson State Park seems to be in a good location to access the falls along the Scenic Highway.
Please add any further discussions etc by this Sunday's (13th) rollover so that we can firm everything up and if we choose to use Benson State Park as home base for the GTG then I will make the reservation if its still available and pay for it up front.
Whew.... ok what-d-ya think guys and gals?

Which part of Benson State Park is this? The part that is directly off the freeway is actually a bit awkward for driving to the falls since you want either Exit 28 or 35 to get to the Historic Hwy and Benson is between these.
But I'm happy you are taking the wheel, so I won't complain to strongly.

Not sure. Just used the web and saw that it was on the West end of most of the Falls. |

Benson also holds the annual Free Fishing Day event on the first weekend in June. I don't know if that will make any difference. The park may be more crowded though.
It's fine with me, if that's what the majority wants to do.

Yes I did see that about the fishing thing but I just called today and as of right now the group shelter is still available and if reserved we shouldn't have any problems regarding the free fish day. Shouldn't is probably the key word there though. |

If you can get water transportation to get river shots of the falls, forget what everyone else wants to do, I'm in on that one. And I'll pay for gas for the boat... unless it's one of those dinner ships that takes 500 gallons or something. Oh, and it needs to be bigger than a kayak. :D
Also note, if you do Punch Bowl at Eagle Creek, they require a day pass or other park pass to park there. Off hand, I can't think of any other parking areas along the Old Scenic Highway that do. But it's something to keep in mind.

My mom actually talked to her sister in law today about it and she's gonna put up some signs at the yacht club for me. She's the Commadore for Rose City Yacht Club so I'm sure we can catch a ride for that. She also has her own boat that might work too. Maybe 2 or 3 of the bigger boats (they're sailboats) and take a cruise up the river. Which falls are visible from the river though?
Is anyone else up for a boat ride?

Almost all of the falls are visible, from the far side. I wish I had the link to the shot I saw someone take from the Washington shoreline near the private club that is over there near that high overlook almost across from Vista point. He had to trek down the railroad tracks to get to a spot where he got several of the falls early in the morning when the water was very still. It was an excellent shot. Being able to manuver along the water back and forth should allow even better shots. I'll see if I can find the link to the shot.

Benson sounds fine to me as well as the 2nd of June. One question though, is there an easy way across the river from the Washington side if I come down through Saint Helens (besides swimming) or do you think it is easier just to drop down to Portland/Vancover and then head east on 84? |

Take the I-205 bridge. If you are further east, take the Bridge of the Gods. You got no choices inbetween.

I have no preferences for where or when. The only caveat being that I'll want to catch a ride with someone if it turns out to be the 9th. |

I just locked in a hike up Dog Mountain to shoot the flower-meadow on June 9. So I'm up for a DPC GTG on June 2. I'm going to hit Oneonta Gorge early, and then I can meet up at Benson? around 10:00? 9:00? Let's get this thing on the calendar!

Let's say 1000 at Benson to give room to anyone who wants to do Oneonta with you maybe?
I'm calling on Monday to make the reservation for Benson if no one objects. I may also still be getting a boat or two for the view from the river but I still think having Benson at 1000 as a rally point is a good idea then those who want to start out doing Oneonta can and if the boat comes through then that'll probably not be everyone going for that anyway. |
