When my wife and I did Silverfalls with a group we started at the North Falls parking lot. I thought it was only about 2 miles to the end (I misunderstood what someone said and didn't double check) so my wife said she'd go. By the time we found out it was really 5 miles or so we were already past Middle North Falls so kept going. It wasn't too bad until we got near the South Falls end. The easy trail was closed due to a slide so we had to take the high trail out... and boy was it steep. I didn't have to much of a problem but my wife did. I ended up carring stuff plus her's and she used the mono-pod as a walking stick and used her service dog to pull her up. It's a good thing she had the harness on her dog rather than a normal leash as it really helped her get up those switch backs. I'm glad she was too tired to do what she said she was going to do for not double checking the distance. LOL! I'm doubly glad that the dog was too tired to do what she wanted to do too. LOL! I've been back to photograph the North Falls down to the Middle North Falls a number of times and really like the place. The only really steep trail is on the South Falls side, the rest of the trail is not bad at all... once you get down the steps leading to the North Falls.
Yep, that's Punch Bowl with the log we all love to hate. If I ever find some trained Beavers, that log is out of there. LOL!
If anyone really wants to get some great pictures of a lot of the falls along the Gorge, the best place to get them is from the river. I would love to find someone that is river savvy in that area and has a boat big enough to be able to shoot comfortably... shoot, I'd even shoot uncomfortably if I was safe, and go along the river from Corbitt to just West of Eagle Creek. I've looked for a charter service, but haven't found any that would work. But if anyone gets a chance to do a river float down that area when the falls are running, paticularly in the morning or late evening when the water is real still, grab it.
Mike

i agree with mr. mick here about the hike, not that i have any good excuse like that, i'm just lazy. =)
(btw, how did becky's surgery go? i remember talking to her a wee bit about it a while back...i hope she's recovering and everything is going how it's supposed to?)

We use our boat for photographing wildlife and other things on the river, but I never thought of shooting the falls with it. Too bad it isn't big enough to carry all of us. We've also never taken it that far upriver before.

Both of her surgeries turned out fine. She can do long walks and short hikes without any trouble, but if she goes too far or puts too much stress on her knees it causes her a lot of pain. She can do miles on her elliptical trainer, but I̢۪ve seen her wincing coming down the stairs in our house.
I think she could probably handle the paved trails at Silver Falls. At least for some of the falls.
The easier falls in the Gorge shouldn't be a problem.

I'd like to do a few falls in the Gorge. I can hike or no. Regardless, I'd like to get some early light in Oneonta Gorge (like 6:30 or 7:00). I'd be happy to meet up with others for that, or get together later in the morning at a yet-to-be-named waterfall. June 2 or June 9 works for me so far.
I'm headed up the gorge with my son this Saturday (May 5) to do a little geocaching. The plan is to visit Elowah Falls and then hike up to McCord Creek Falls. These are two less-visited falls in the Gorge. Of course I'll have the camera along too. The hike is purported to be a 3-mile round trip with a 750' elevation gain. You all are welcome to join us if you'd like. We'll probably be leaving Portland around 8:00am or so.

I'm unavailable for the 9th, it turns out. My wife's doing a fashion show that day, and I need to be present.
2nd is still good, though. |

2nd or 9th works for me. As far as locations that camping idea sounded fun but it seems the prevailing thought is for the falls and I'm good with that too (though I'd prefer not to climb steep trails-but I will if I have to).
The boat idea sounds awesome and my mom knows quite a few sailboaters moored along Marine Drive (RCYC, PYC, etc). In fact her sister in law is the Commodore for RCYC. I could see if there might be a couple of them who'd like to take us all on cruise up the river but with gas prices lately I'm not sure any of them would do it for free. I'll find out if any of them might be interested in doing that and then I'll let you guys know. |

The second weekend in June works great for me and I've been dying to do a GTG. I didn't read all the posts but it looks like you're still making decisions. I want to put my vote in for the second weekend in June if possible! |

It looks like we might have a few new faces at this GTG. That's cool, especially if any of them are willing to pose nude in the waterfall. ;)
We still need to decide where and when. I guess some really cool person needs to make a decision. Cristin?

Hey Jason, that's very dangerous. Trout like to eat worms. ;)
Anyway, I'm hoping that someone prettier... and female will volunteer.

I'd volunteer to do it but, no one wants to see me that way.... ewwww! Besides I'm still acclimated to Hawaii weather. My inner thermometer is trying to remember what it was like to grow up here. |

Let me remind everyone, if you're showing...I'm shooting. Period! Ok, that philosophy has already gotten me in trouble more than once. I think I may be the only one here who's shot a male butt simply because they offered. After that photo most people on DPC wished I didn't live by the "if you're showing I'm shooting" philosophy. Oh well. Unfortunately I can't get the women to model for me. sniff.
So, has a date been finalized for the GTG? |

I got a reprieve. I can go if it's the 9th, but I'll be vehicle-less. |

i'm not going to be able to make it no matter which day we do it, so maybe i shouldn't be the one making the final decision here. =)
i ended up having to work saturdays, so i guess yall will just have to try to have a good time without me. =)

I'm planning to attend this GTG, perhaps with fas-ligand, when it gets finalized. You can never take to many pictures of Gorge waterfalls. I'm looking forward to meeting all of you.

What kind of fearless cool leader bails out at the last minute? That's not very cool Cristin.
Couldn't we do it on a Sunday?

I'd be good for a Sunday. That'd mean skipping Church but, I haven't found one since being back that really feels like the one I left in Hawaii so Sunday works for me..... how bout the rest of you guys. |

I would like to come too if you all would have me. It is only 120 or so mile drive down I-5, depending on where you all meet up. I might actually be in Portland in June sometime, but it is for business and I probably would be able to break free....Let me know though as I would love to meet you all

So the person starting this GTG bailed out and I don't see anyone jumping to the leadership role. I've never gone on a GTG so I'm really not experienced to organize this. Will someone please volunteer to be the organizer and just set a firm date and itenerary? I'd hate to see this possibility die due to too many Indians and not enough Chiefs if you know what I mean. |
