Hey gang, just a plea here for those who are listening to the podcasts but not providing feedback. Currently I have no way of knowing how many people are listening in to the podcasts and if the interviews are being well received. I'm surprised at the lack of conversation on the forums. I would expect that something that was said in the podcast would generate a conversation considering this last weeks podcast included over an hour and a half of interviews. Are the interviews boring? Do the interviews need to be more controversial to generate discussion? I'm just curious what people think and the interviewees I'm sure would love to know what you thought of their ideas and opinions too! |

I'm on dial-up, still downloading... 3.5 hours to go until I can listen to part one.
Last time your podcast was somehow saved in a much smaller file. It would be great if you can figure out how that happened so you can do it again. :) |

I have enjoyed the interview from episode one and I think the format is great. You and you co-host are doing great as well as putting at fair amount of time into this so we can have another great venue. I thank you for that.
Thanks for interviewing me in episode 6 (part one). The lack of feedback, i don't understand. Both interviews I feel were good. I know you gave me no heads up on the questions that you were going to ask which makes the guest answer with no rehearsal.
I would like to know what people think about my interview. Maybe they just don't like me :P
EDIT: This week there are a lot of entries to vote on and that may tie up some users time along with some users being on dial up.

Where can I find the podcasts? |

Hey, keep up the good work!
I've listened to and enjoyed every podcast (except #6 and it's on my ipod ready to go). They are very good and getting better every time.
Have you looked into getting them posted on iTunes? For me and other iTunes users, that would make it easy to subscribe. Just a suggestion. I'll listen anyway, but having it on iTunes might drive traffic to the site as well. I think iTunes will also provide some metrics like # of downloads as well.

Thanks for some feedback. The iTunes issues has been an ongoing issue. I'm so focused on getting the show recorded that I've been leaving the iTunes thing up to my partner who hosts the site. I know he and I have been missing each other as far as discussing this. He did post a work around for iTunes which you can search for in the threads if you had time. Again, we're working on that issue.
The podcasts are all hosted at:

I'd probably listen if it was on iTunes.
I probably wont otherwise. Just lazy, I know, but you asked for feedback.

Gordon, that's fair. I'll see if I can figure out our problem with iTunes. The show is saved as an xml file and should be subscribable with podcatching software like iTunes...I just haven't used iTunes specifically. I did manage to subscribe to my own rss feed using ipodder though.

I've listened to part of the Bryan Peterson interview but I need more time. I love what you are doing. Keep it up. Get it on Itunes and I'll be a freaking regular. Remember, it's not always that the best app is the most popular, but the most popular app is the most popular app. As it is, I may or may not have a good way to get them on the Ipod, which means I may or may not listen to them.
Another thing that might help spur discussion is picking up on topics that are not already hashed out in too much detail. If we've already discussed it adnausem, it's unlikely that a podcast will cause us to discuss it more. In fact, by the time you get a podcast together about it, we may simply wish it would go away.

nards, good point. We were trying to stay "relevant" by taking the "hot topics" of the week and discussing them. However, you have a legitimate point in that perhaps the discussions are already "cold" by the time we get to them. We're always trying to tweak the format but don't know what people want to hear if we don't get much in the way of feedback.

Bummer, the server reset at 87% downloaded. I'm not sure I'm going to get to listen to this one. :(

I think you are doing a great job. I love podcasts they suit my lifestyle where I don̢۪t get the time to read the forums as much as I would like but with the podcast I can listen to what̢۪s going on while I jog or drive or even at work.
If you can get the itunes subscription happening that would help you gain more audience. I find it so convenient to just plug my ipod in and get the latest podcast of all my favorite subjects.
On the actual content I would prefer to hear more about the members themselves not just their photography interest but a little about whom they are and what they do for work recreation and enjoyment that sort of thing.

They're great but after the second one i've lost how to find them.
Could there be a link in the 'Community' section or something?
Want to hear many more of them.

One minor suggestion - would it be possible to look into using VBR instead of CBR to reduce the filesizes, or even just compressing at a lower bitrate? 35-50mb files are prohibitive for users on slow connections still...

It may just be me, but I really like L2's accent on Podcast 5. How about anyone else?

Really good feedback here from several of you. I will work on getting the show working on iTunes, reducing the filesize and including personal information about the photographers such as what they like to do for fun, etc.
By the way, we are linked to from the Community Pages on DPC...the second from the top is the DPC Podcast. |

Information and interesting, I like to listen to it in the background while working. I would like to hear more voices of people from DPC. Do more interviews but brief ones.
Also, create a format, say you have welcome section, challenge news, special report, interviews, whats coming and ending session.
Would make it more easy to listen to.
Thanks for making it, you put in a lot of time making it!
Cheers!

Listening to it right now as I'm surfing the site. I find it's really professionally done. I like it and find it adds (literally) a voice, or rather voices(!) to DPC.
So... Keep up the good work. It's great! |

I love the DPC podcasts and really look forward to them. You are doing a fantastic job. The interviews are great and it is wonderful to hear the voices of the people we know and love here at DPC.
You and Laurie compliment each other nicely and you both are very easy on the ears because you sound relaxed, clear and seem to be enjoying yourselves. The interviews are informative and done very well.
Like others have said, it would be nice to be able to subscribe to it in iTunes and it might broaden your audience if that's what you want. :)
I for one, really appreciate you taking the time and effort to do these podcasts and hope you continue doing them.
Episode 6 is out??!! Didn't know.... Got some downloading to do... :)
Keep up the good work and all the best!

Yes--the file sizes seem too large for the content and could be reduced without too much degradation. However, I would stay away from VBR, since not all MP3 players support it. Try playing around with the bit rate (64 Kbps or even 48). Also, if you get rid of the introductory music, then stereo would not be necessary, which would save even more space. ;-)
Another suggestion...is it possible to update the metadata for the MP3 files (similar to EXIF), whereas you could enter the podcast date, title, artist, track info, etc? This would make it easier to catalog it on my media player library, for later searching and listening.
BTW, I listen to all the podcasts on my Zen Sleek while I'm on the airplane every week. This week it helped to pass about an hour of time (in a four-hour flight). Keep up the good work!

This iTunes thing is going to be the death of me! But what fun.
In the beginning we did have iTunes setup but since then it's been hit and miss between me and Lee (lkn4truth) getting the xml file setup correctly for iTunes.
It's totally possible to subscribe to the podcast and has been since the beginning, just that right now the xml file needs updating again.
Anyways, here are the instructions on subscribing to the podcast as getting listed on iTunes requires a bit more than just having a podcast so we're working on getting these things all worked out nicely. Here's how to subscribe:
iTunes and go to "Advanced | Subscribe" and enter in //www.dpcpodcast.com/podcasts/DPChallenge-TheUnofficialPodcast.xml
hit enter and you're good to go. Download the ones you haven't heard.

I have had mine set up for subscribe and the last two podcast are there in my iTunes library but they won't transfer from my library to my iPod??.
Every other podcast that I subscribe to just upload to my iPod when it's connected but with the DPC Podcast it just won't load.

sea2c, thanks for providing the instructions on how to subscribe to the show with iTunes using the advanced subscription option. If you know what I have to do to the xml file exactly to get it to work "slick, bam, boom" then let me know (perhaps again) and I'll make triple sure to get it done. Seems iTunes will be the death of us both if we don't get this issue worked out. The file size issue should be fairly easy to fix. We can go to a much lower sample rate and still have quality sound for voice...like was suggested, perhaps I'll drop the music so we don't have to record stereo. I'll look into that next. |
