Traditionally 6.0 has represented about the 90th percentile in open challenges and the 80th percentile in member challenges. There is a variance, of course, but it is fairly accurate.
EDIT: I looked and I have 8 scores between 5.97 and 6.03. The percentiles are: 94, 82, 81, 79, 79, 78, 76, and 71. The 71 was the Best of 2005 challenge which is an odd challenge on its own.

my picture is in the portrait challenge, but i've been looking on most of the landscape photos today and i must say: wow, there are sooo many great photos, that it's really hard to say, who will make it in the top 20!
it's a really tough challenge, i'm exited to see the results...
good luck to ya landscapers! ;)

4.98 --- I would love to see those extra two hundreths of a point to hit that 5 mark again. 36 hours since and its holding steady.

My score has dropped over the last 36 hours about .15. That's a fair amount after 150 votes. I think I'm out of the Top 25 at this point... |

For a very skewed data point, I have a 5.90 in an open challenge that finished at 53%. Takes talent to do that, I tell ya! |

What do you think its going to take to make the top 25 in this challenge? 6.5 or greater? |

I got a comment that suggests that someone doesn't understand this challenge. I am not complaining about the score they gave, but it bothers me to think they might be leaving these comments on a lot of images, and a simple PM might clear that up.
What do you think--should I PM them, post a general "statement" here, or let them go about their business under what pretty clearly seems to be a misreading of the challenge?
I figure this is probably going on a few (or maybe a lot of images), so PMing them (or posting) they still wouldn't know my image, but I can't be sure.
What do you think?

PM them without identifying your image specifically. Be diplomatic, and good luck :-)

I think I disagree, but I want more info. What would be an "A" etc? In the "real world" average is a "C" and the average, it would seem on dpc is 5.5. So a 6 is more like a C+ or B-. :) |
Oh... that is easy:
10/9 - "A"
8 - "B"
7 - "C"
6 - "D"
<5 - "F"
You are right. In the real world "C" is average and that is how I score images. Average photographs at DPC are generally pretty darned good.
DPCers concept of "average" is... wellll... just plain wrong.

Don't get hung up on the numbers, focus on where you sort out to. The numbers are just markers, they have no inherent meaning in such a diverse group as DPC. The real question is simply, where did you rank against the other entries? |
You are right, of course, a number is just a number and the rank against the other photographs is what really matters.
You will notice, however, people rarely complain about their relative ranking against the other photographs, it is the number that most often makes them mad. |

I don't understand this thinking. The median score on a 1-10 scale is 5.5, after all. On the average DPC challenge, the average of all the scores is somewhere between 5.2 and 5.6, more or less, which seems about right to me. The only thing that's unusual is that it is very rare to see a high score much over 7.6 or so. And that's explainable simply by the different preferences across regions and ages and different aesthetic biases in the voting group.
I repeat what I've said before; your percentile finish is a better indication of the "status" of your entry than the raw score can ever be.

I'm always a little fascinated about how people develop their own scoring system. Mine generally goes something like this:
1-3 = I don't get it! (I rarely give out any of these).
4 = The photo is disrepectful
5 = DNMC
6 = Meets the challenge, but not much more
7 = Technically looks good. No complaints.
8 = The photo touches my artistic or emotional side as well. (humor, happy, sad, just plain beautiful!!)
9 = Wow!!!
10 = I can't stop staring!!!
I noticed some people give a score based on an category assignment of a 0-3 and then add up the numbers to reach a number between 1-10. I once received such a comment which included the numbers per category, but they forgot to put the total so I received a comment with all of these low numbers and was completely frightened! Fortunately, I added it them up and figured out I got a 7. LOL.
Apparently, most voters have a much lower voting scale than my own, but I genuinely feel that the quality here at DPC is very high and I try to enjoy each and every one of the photos presented here and back that up with a score based on my own scale of thinking. Whether or not that is right or wrong,I cannot say. But, why should I follow the typical thinking here at DPC of putting scores at lower point where my 7, 8, 9's equal someone else's 4,5, and 6? So, with those thinkers, I will respectfully agree...to disagree. After all, it's my vote to give. |

The error of this thinking, in my opinion, is the fundamental assumption that 5.5 is somehow special just because it is the mathematical median. It isn't. It only has meaning if someone thinks it does. I just don't think it does. The scale above makes better sense to me. |

I am so "Not Feelin' the Love" tonight:
After riding a high all day Friday in the 5.02 range, a bunch of nasty trolls have come along today and tanked it so that I likely won't see 5.0 again:

I've fallen by around 0.06xx in the last 10 votes or so. Going from 208 votes to 218. Didn't expect to see that much movement with that many votes in. |

Really?! Oh, I thought you passed me miles ago and were busy "Peering Into Infinity" and beyond...while my poor photo is still learning to fall with style...;-)
Good thing I polished my halo today, otherwise I'd be tempted to pick on poor Mr. stdavidson's horse again...hehehe. |
Hmmmmmm... haven't heard much from Ms. Hihosilver about her score lately.
Picture not doing so well anymore? ;) ;)

Well, Mr. Davidson I see you've finally surfaced again, but alas without posting your score. As I didn't see your Seabiscuit even with my binoculars, am I too assume now that your horse has been fed some additional Tiz Whiz and you are ready to pass me by?
Do tell... |
