If you can.

Tonight, while shooting a pre-wedding party, I took a mis-step off a stage while trying to get angles on a dance ceremony, and knocked my camera against a sub-box, destroying both my AF360FGZ flash and my Sigma 24-135mm lens.

Amazingly, the camera survived.. Pentax.. you make gooooood cameras.

Unfortunately, the flash and the sigma were two extremely important parts of my equipment and I'm just torn up inside. Such a stupid thing to happen, and I'll miss them dearly.

The moral of the story is, if you count on your equipment.. please go buy insurance for it if it is at all possible to do so. Don't be stuck like me.. without important gear and now facing the possibility of having to abandon starting a small side business because of it.

Ouch, man...I can imagine your pain. My heart stops everytime my batteries die.
How did you manage for the rest of the party?

Sorry to hear, Glen. Don't give up on starting the side business - it's more about marketing and talent than equipment and you definitely have the talent.

Hope you weren't hurt. Best wishes and thanks for posting the warning.

Another important thing to remember, always have backup equipment, yes it is expensive, but not as expensive as being caught on the day with dud gear.

I use a 5D for my weddings, but have my old 300D as a backup just in case, if the worst ever did happen, I would rather show the bride/groom a 6mp image than nothing at all.

Good post Glen.

Oh Arty, I'm so sorry to hear of your equipment loss. :(

Down here (N.Z.) we can insure camera gear etc with an all risks extension to the Home owners account. I Deal with Sun Alliance (SIS Insce) and have never had a problem with any claims on my gear

Oh Glen, *hugs* damn I'm sorry bout your gear!

Like Ken said....don't give up, you have the talent. And thanks for the warning...... camera's insured, but my lens' aren't. Will look into it.

OMG Glen, what a freak accident. What are you going to do regarding the wedding? Can you borrow from anyone for the day?
08/05/2006 08:33:35 AM · #9
Oh, and I thought going out with my camera but my SD card still in the computer was bad enough (festival on today...). Well, Glen, those things are replaceable.

So sorry to hear your bad news, and so appeciate that you think of others at a time like this. I am not sure if my camera gear is covered but I will check my insurance policy.

Excellent advice.

I may be a bit more to the extreme side ... but at last night's wedding, I had my 5D and 20D on me (actively using both). And another 20D and 300D "in the bag" just in case.

I know its gonna vary from company to company, but does anybody have an idea of about how much it would cost to insure the equipment? Even if it is just the camera body

What he said!! A few jobs here and there and you'll be able to start replacing them. But I'm still over here shedding a few tears for you anyways because that just sucks! :-(

Make sure they cover drops, most here (norwegionono) doesn't!

Down south Our insurance companies also cover you under a blanket policy of your home owners policy. They state its covered as an extention of your home as well was your car if someone steals it from there. Its good to know your policy. But even better to get a suplemental policy just for a few dollars

OMG Glen...I'm so, so sorry about what happened to you and your equipment. That really does suck and I know you must be really upset. Is there any way they can be repaired for less than what it might cost to buy new ones? What a bummer. :(

The extension to my home owner's insurance to cover my camera gear is about 30 euro a year, for a maximum insured amount of 3000 euro. Everything I carry outside the house that has a value of over 100 euro is covered by the extension, not only my camera gear. I guess 1% of the insured amount is quite reasonable, at least over here.

BTW, they asked A LOT of additional questions when I claimed repairs for 300 euro to my camera and lens after a freak accident similar to the OP's, but then I made the claim only two months after getting the insurance. Must have looked fishy to them, but it really was an accident. Boy, was I happy to have that insurance, I had been postponing getting it for months!

Sorry to hear about your accident. The advice for insurance and backup equipment are surely good ones when going into business but you need to keep things in perspective. Photographic equipment can always be replaced but your health may not always be so fortunate. Your misstep did not result in personal injury and as such you were very lucky. Can you imagine what the consequences would have been if you landed on, and fractured a hand, wrist or arm? Many times these types of injuries do not heal properly, cause long lasting pain, require surgery(s), and can result in permanent disability. Lost income from not working and medical bills.

If there is a silver lining to this incident it's the lessons you've learned and your continued well being.

I'm so sorry to hear :(

I agree with Ken though: don't give up starting that side business. You have to much to offer to not keep going forward with that

Thanks for all the replies everyone.

I am trying to stay positive about it.. but it may take a few days. heh.

Problem is, for my business, I almost *need* a mid-range AF zoom lens. (Child/Family portraiture in Natural Light). I can *use* the 50mm for many things, but it's almost impossible to rely on it for a full shoot.

All it means though is delaying a new camera body purchase for another half-year or so so I can pick up another decent mid-range zoom. I'll have to start looking around.

As for personal injury.. people making those points are absolutely correct. Things *can* be replaced. Eventually. But I do still find myself wishing I'd only hurt myself minorly while keeping all the equipment intact. ;)

C'est la vie, as they say. Now to find a store that can rent Pentax equipment..

Sorry to hear about that... it's still a good thing it was just the lens and flash, and not the body that was damaged... :) now, on to the real question, how'd the shoot end up?

If you are in desperate need I can let you borrow mines as I haven't used it as much recently.

Edit: Oops too late :( I hate that my internet goes out for days at a time sometimes and I don't get a chance to read all threads.
