'round these here parts, 30 degrees is not only cool, it's down right frigid...

so no more excuses... get back to work...

at least until you've commented on mine... :)

He, he, he, Celsius vs. Fahrenheit! I was in the States recently, and they said it was a nice 68 degrees, and I was sort of daydreaming and didn't make the conversion right away but jumped, thinking I was going to be toast.

I'm holding out to ribbon on this one, but the score vacillates agonisingly between 2.9x and 3.0x . . .
3.0000 as I write

So bizarre... my last two votes were a 10 and a 1....

At around 100-150 votes I dipped below 6.0, but for several days it has held out around 6.1 to almost 6.2:

I just found this site less than two weeks ago I think. It's depressing and encouraging at the same time. I can even break the 4 mark. I've never taken photography seriously, just a simple vacation snap-shotter usually. After coming here and seeing the artistry that most of you exhibit in your work, I am in awe, and reallize that my pretty flowers really were lousy!

BUT the good thing is that people leave very frank, but polite comments, and they help alot. So does the site itself. It has so much to offer those of us trying to learn.

Anyway, kudos to all of you, keep your fingers crossed that one day, I'll break the 4 mark. Probably have to invest in a decent camera before that will happen, but I'm having fun.

Learned what bokeh is. And isn't.

Goodygal, I've only been here 4 months and I think I have progressed quite a way. My second challenge came second to last, and my eighth placed 7th :) Don't get depressed, we all were beginners once, we're at all levels of skill and talent, and this is a great learning and sharing environment.

Wait and see; a couple more challenges and you'll be right up there! :D

These were taken with the same camera you have. It can do quite well.

The bad news is, it's the photographer, not the camera, that takes the pictures.

The good new is, it's the photographer, not the camera, that takes the pictures.

The way to improve your photos is to improve your understanding and limitations of the equipment you're using.

Keep shooting. It will come.

Heh. Reminds me of a joke (forgive me if this is old and well-known).

A famous photographer is invited to dinner at a royal's mansion. She welcomes him by saying he takes wonderful pictures and that he must have excellent equipment. He's a bit taken aback, but says nothing until after dinner, when he says how much he enjoyed the meal and that she must have excellent utensils.

*listening for the sounds of crickets, hoping for a small chuckle somewhere*

My biggest disappointment in this challenge is that my technique was mistaken for another one, and I wish I'd discovered that other one first!

At any rate, I'm sitting at 3.6, so I think I have a shot at the brown. That's last place, right? I'm new here. :)
06/27/2006 03:52:24 AM · #315
Brown is last. You can join me! :-D
06/27/2006 04:11:23 AM · #316
Thanks everyone!

I'll be honored to fight for the brown!

Oh, to the person that linked those pics taken with the same camera as mine, they were pretty gorgeous!

Now, I'm encouraged. My superstitions one is stupid, but I'm new to this having to take a picture based on theme.... It's fun tho!

The S50 is great cam...I would have a lot more candids if I still had mine. Point the big gun at em now and everyone starts acting and posing. I loved my S50 for non Setup/Posed shots.

This is the japanese word from which the term bokeh comes from. Where did I get this info my mother who is from Yokohama Japan. When I asked her to explain she simply stated an out of focus area used to enchance something in focus. Hope that helps Hope someone has not already said this in the 11 pages I did not care to filter thru.. thanks

In photography good “Bokeh” is more than just out of focus areas to enhance a subject. It is an effect that an effect caused by light refraction in the lens resulting in circular light patterns in the blurred areas of the image.

This is one of the criteria I am using in my voting and I am sure some people won’t like it.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that Ken Rockwell isn't the definitive expert on the subject, but that's neither here nor there.

I saw lots of good pictures in this challenge! And let me make this perfectly clear - on the subject of what is or isn't bokeh, I'm a bit fuzzy, so I pretty much gave everyone the benefit of the doubt when voting. And that said, there are some great examples of what I consider to be "good bokeh". My shot seems quite a bit mundane by comparison, so I've definitely learned something from this challenge!

I always smile when people quote Ken Rockwell as an authoritative source of any kind of information. He's discredited himself on many occasions.

Anyways, do you mean that you only give good scores to images with circular highlights in them? Note that rendition of OOF elements is still called Bokeh, regardless of presence of circular highlights, even according to your reference.

Circular highlights is just one of the things to look at when comparing Bokeh of two lenses. Many people in this challenge are unaware of this, and submitted images with quite unpleasant renditions of circular highlights (harsh, doughnut-shaped highlights). Those images got a low mark from me. But if one avoided circular highlights and achieved a nice creamy OOF rendition, he would get a higher mark from me. Of course, first of all, the image must be interesting, regardless of the quality of Bokeh.

My bokeh and my motion blur are only doing a blah-blah score. I am ok with them, but not thrilled. I have MUCH higher expectations for my flower and my glass though. I am more excited to see those go in. At least the latest scores on motion and bokeh won't hurt my overall average so far by to much of a scale. :)

I'm restless today after doing two shots. I should just go watch and old movie but I think what I will do is score the bokehs. I don't like to vote on a challenge I am in but since I am in almost all of them it isn't a good thing just voting on one challenge a go around. I might as well jump in and vote for the ones I am in to. :)
