This was what I was going to enter originally until I was prompted by someone to shoot something a little different. :) I was so burned out by the 30-day SP challenge that I had a hard time getting motivated to do this challenge.

PS: i'm mighty dissapointed with the score :-(

I thought this should have done way better, it's an awesome shot.

For mine, I took about 200 photos with various grimaces and neck-cracking positions, and entered the simplest one. Aside from my in-the-mirror little portrait on my page here (which I shall now promptly change), this was my first true self-portrait. It was also the first time I used studio strobes. I really wish I had done better than 6.1, I thought it looked ok. I'm so at a loss as to how to make a self-portrait interesting. All I have going for me is a nasty stare, really. Anyway, this is mine:

I originally posted this. I was pretty pleased with it too. But then I kept getting this nagging feeling that after the 30 day challenge, if I was going to score well with anything it would have to be markedly better than anything I posted during those 30 days.... so I shot this:

7th place! I'm very pleased with that! :D

Good choice! I really think you made the right decision.

Not really an outtake - since I think I only took a shot or two.
Here is my non-blurred image. I really look like I need some sleep in the outtake image...not really that attractive of an image that close up. I look like I'm about 103 years old :)

I wanted to have the eyes be the focal point - and I found the lines, bags under the eyes, freckles, general ugliness - to distract from my eyes. I took the risk to remove those unappealing elements, and got kicked in the ass for it. :)

This was my entry and I think many people didn't like the post processing but I was happy that I could get the mood across.

Now I just wonder, would have something like this worked better? I know this one is not the best because you can't see the eyes but I am referring more to the lighting and mood of this other shot.

I actually like the challenge entry better, the outtake looks like you forgot to smooth a little part. Maybe no smoothing at all would work best...

I have no outtakes either. But here is my original next to my entry. I dont know why but I am a bit bummed about my finish. I should be pleased with anything over a 6, but the 25 votes 4 and under just dont seem to sit well.

don't stress man...mine got 21 votes 4 and under and it came in second. There's no point trying to figure that stuff out...it'll just make you crazy. the good news is it happens to all the images, so it all kind of evens out in the end. like you said...anything over 6 is a good score, so be pleased that you did that with a really creative image.:)

Thanks for the support Pedro. I think I am over it now. I can be a bit of a whiny baby at times. The comments were great and I had alot of fun seeing my shot come into reality. And to be anywhere close to those shots that placed above me is an honor. I am still pretty noobish to all of this but I have been having a blast. THere are so many great photographers here to learn from and to have anybody comment positively or even give my shots a second glance is a wonderful thing. Thank you all.

The problems with all of these are obvious, but they were fun, and really the first portraits I've ever done.

I think you made the right choice. Your entry was very strong. It established a mood and everything about the image supported it. Well done. :-) I like your outtake too, but I don't think it's quite as strong.

I loved the one you entered.. the post processing really worked in my opinion it conveyed such a melancholy mood.. the tones were great and your expression ~ Perfect.. I think you are beautiful as well. Nice work

I had this idea in my head to take a picture of me with my sweater over my face.... I dunno why.. I just did. :)

So, after and hour or so of sweating my a$$ off in the basement under hot lights.... I decided to go topless. Well, they didn't look as well as I planned. So, I found this cute little skirt that I just bought laying on the washer to be washed. I put it on as a shirt and decided to take a picture like that... why not? I wasn't ready for the timer to go off.... and it caught me like this. But I liked it. I only shot 2 in this "outfit".

1st - here is the color version of my entry:

These are other's I considered entering.... from most favorite on.

I am very happy though... I reached one personal goal, and that was to get a 6.5. I find it funny that my 3 highest rated photos are all of me! :)

I like this one. I actually like it better than your submission. More of a connection between viewer and subject.

These could only have done better. I doubt they'd have done worse.
