This is a close up shot of my pjII model. This is how I came across him. He never moved a muscle through the shots I took except for a slight grin behind his beard and moustache. I have never gone out on the street to take pictures of strangers. This guy was very cordial (the other guy in my entry was basically indifferent) and it made me think that maybe I should get out and try this some more.
What outtakes does everyone else have? |

This is the one I was going to enter before I happened to follow that police car.

Tim - Left you a comment. No outtakes for me to post on this one...kinda wish I had one in retrospect. ;^) |

This is how I had originally envisioned the shot, but was afraid of a DQ with the editing. There really is a window where the shaft of light "would" have been coming from. The sun just didn't cooperate that day. :-)

Not sure this counts as an "outtake" since I took it the day after the challenge window (Monday, May 1). I was really bummed the challenge came that week because I knew I'd have a great opportunity for some good photojournalism shots the next day.
This morning, I realized I could have used this for the current challenge had I named it "Don't Protest Children" or something. D'oh! |

Here is my original:
And here is an outtake that sets the scene a bit better
I decided the action shot might be better! I sent it to the student newspaper and they said they will try and get the story behind it from the coastguards! True photojournalism! |

I also considered both of these.... considering ALL of the top 3 were sports related, maybe I should have entered one of them:

That's a neat shot. Did you consider cropping right into the riders and eliminating the brush in the background? |

haha yeah might have been a good idea, considering there was a huge lack of actual photojournalistic pictures besides the sports shots.
Like this thread started with talk about a model, there are no models in photojournalism!
I know it's still allowed in dpc, but...that bugged me personally. Luckily I could only comment =) |

I called my person a model, buthe did not pose for me. I walked up to him to see if I could take his pic and he said yes. His pose and mannerisms did not change. My entry was a pictuer of two men who were exactly as I found them. I felt the pic told a story - what story I do not know. Does photojournalism need to be a candid shot? |

Personally, I don't think so - but my knowledge of what really works for photojournalism is obviously weak. An example I can think of that I would see in our local paper is a farmer posed in front of his older model tractor and a field/barn behind him with story about; 1) rising cost of fuel impacting thin profits, 2) encroaching development leaves farmer a rare breed in local area, 3) etc... |

It bugged me too, and I voted accordingly. I went out and sought actual photojournalistic situations to shoot in, saw a shot, and took it. Actually, the very next frame after my entry is of the cop stepping in front of the body and crossing his arms, and fixing me with a "Oh no you don't!" stare. As good as the ones that won are, I don't think they would make the front page of the whole paper... the front page of the sports section, but not the whole paper. I |

I would also like to thank everyone for their comments and votes. This has been my best challenge. |

I guess we all have different opinions on good photojournalism becuase I would have voted that one higher than your actual entry. |

Finally, I can share some outtakes from my Penn Relay shoot which was the source of the the images for Photojournalism II and Rhythyms II.
April 27-29 was the 112th Penn Relay at the University of Pennsylvania. It's an amazing three day event. The events include prep schools, highschools, colleges, Olympic development teams, and masters events (40+, 50+ and 60+). Participats come from as far as Canada, Jamaica (huge fan following), Bahamas, Virgin Islands.
I got some amazing images from the Womens Triple Jump, the Womens High Jump, and the Mens Long Jump before my battery kicked. DOH! When will I learn? Mens Polevault was next...
PhotojournalismII and Rhythyms II
I love the look of determination on some of the athletes faces, especially the Womens Triple Jump.
This has been an exciting week watching the scores on my Photojournalism hover around 7.0. At the same time I had the irony of having my personal worst image (Freestudy XI) the same week as my personal best. mk said it best, "It's good to have them both in the same way...you're too busy basking in the glow to feel disappointed. ;) Congrats!"
And she's right as always... |

I just noticed that for this lens, I have both the best and worst scores, and I have the 3rd highest for D50 owners. hehe... |
