April 27-29 was the 112th Penn Relay at the University of Pennsylvania. It's an amazing three day event. The events include prep schools, highschools, colleges, Olympic development teams, and masters events (40+, 50+ and 60+). Participats come from as far as Canada, Jamaica (huge fan following), Bahamas, Virgin Islands.

I got some amazing images from the Womens Triple Jump, the Womens High Jump, and the Mens Long Jump before my battery kicked. DOH! When will I learn? Mens Polevault was next...

Rhythyms II:

Outtakes:

I love the look of determination on some of the athletes faces, especially the Womens Triple Jump.

This has been an exciting week watching the scores on my Photojournalism hover around 7.0. At the same time I had the irony of having my personal worst image (Freestudy XI) the same week as my personal best. mk said it best, "It's good to have them both in the same way...you're too busy basking in the glow to feel disappointed. ;) Congrats!"

And she's right as always...

The Photo-Gods were smiling on you that day. If any lane other than #7 were in the lead, it probably wouldn't have the same impact. Belated congrats & job well done. :-)

These are all great shots! I love that we are only seeing one of the baton toting runners. Great colors, composition and contrast.

A strong visual presentation with the contrast of movement against the stretches. Congratulations on your Yellow.

I love the way you included your outtakes. They are all pretty darn good, but i dont think any would have got a 7.

So I think you most certainly made the right decision, and congrats on your ribbon, it a great shot.

Critique Club
Wow this is my second ribboon I have had to critique in two days so we will see how this one goes. First off congratulations on your Ribbon it well deserved!

To me there are so many interesting aspects to this shot, the point of view from where you are is great with the the bend of track coming into the staggered line of the runners creates a great dynamic and something to keep the eye moving. I like how each individual can tell there own story, from the first runner coming in lane 7 to the poor guy in lane 6 who must be so far behind he doesn't even have his hands off his legs yet. And I think the lighting you captured as well really helps as you get a complementary story in every shadow. It really has almost every thing perfect. I could totally see this in any sports publication from the local paper to Sports Illustrated.
However I do think there could be a couple things improved. One is the crop that you chose cuts off the runner in lane 8 and is really noticeable as that is the main line running through the photograph. You could have possibly zoomed out more to have included the runner in lane 9 also so that you didn't have this mysterious shadow reaching into your photo. But that is it really in terms of composition that I can see could use improvement. The second thing is that title is way too long, and I am not trying to be mean or rude but there are more words and/or numbers in this title than I have ever seen in any other entry on this site. You probably should have stopped after the first comma, or maybe you could have said it was the world's largest annual track meet, but other than that this photo has enough of a story in and of itself that even glancing down at the title like I do with some entries it would take me a few seconds to try and register all of that information that I stop looking at the photo.
Well congratulations again on your ribbon your photo is excellent. If you have any questions or comments just send me a PM.

Really good work Eug. This is one of my absolute favorites in the challenge. Very well done shot. Ofcourse I showed you earlier the one little flaw I saw with it, but congrats on a ribbon on a very deserving photo.

Very nice photo. I can definitely see this in a slide show of AP photos. As a front page photo I would think having something that included the finish line would have been better but it certainly didn't hurt you here. Congrats on your first ribbon!

I love the "off photo" anticipation, and the fact there is one runner there that makes the way for the rest. I love photos that make me look outside the photo - nice work :)

awesome shot. absolutely. simply fantastic composition. i will be so pissed if this doesn't make the dpc front page--it's one of the best i've run across yet. if this was mine, i'd have it printed 20x30 and dry mounted. it's too good not to print.

How many comments has your title attracted? A lot I hope, because it is so bad it both sucks and blows! I bet Da Vinci wishes he'd come up with something as catchy instead of "Mona Lisa" :P

The photo though deserves a great deal of respect. I can't imagine how you could have caught this better. The runners lined up perfectly. The leader (?) just arriving in shot. Even the shadow in the bottom corner with its outstretched arm adds to the image. Top stuff.

Wow -- excellent job! This is perhaps one of the best representations of the challenge I've seen so far. Could certainly appear in a newspaper, and could certainly be a ribbon winner this time around.

NICE sports capture! I'd say this surpasses most local newspapers in quality. Maybe ya should submit a resume to SI :-) I only have one teenie issue with the photo. A disembodied shadow at the lower left, a bit of crop would have fixed. I'm still gonna give you a 10!
