As you all know (or should know), David Sidwell profiles his favorite photographer once a week in what is my favorite part of the forums anymore. I think it’s time that we highlighted none other than David himself.
David’s many successes on this site include some of his eight ribbon winning shots (and counting). David is a master teacher, but perhaps more important, he is a master student, perhaps the best thing one can be here. His selective desaturation work in Licorice L’Amore was not the first nor the last attempt at this technique, yet he used a tutorial on the site to create an image that is perhaps better than the original. He explained his efforts in such a way that those techniques could also be copied. The photo itself is beautiful, showing us a reason for the desaturation – to highlight the connection between the two people. The color chosen – red – could indicate the love shared in that bond (of licorice).
David has also mastered adding mood to a photo – to make you feel like you are actually there, enjoying the same thing as the people in the photo. When the Pickin’s Done shows this technique well, his toning accenting the feel to the shot, the covered face emphasizing the Everyman quality it has. The same effects are quite well done in Oreos on Ice. Viewing this shot without feeling the intense cold from the wisps of frigid blowing air is impossible. Like all of David’s striking images, this one pulls you into the scene – you feel a part of it.
One thing that separates people who do photography from “photographers” is the ability and desire to go the extra step in creating and executing the perfect shot. Sometimes that means climbing up a swingset like David did for Lottie’s picture and sometimes it means going to extensive and painstaking work for just the right look, as in 3d Botany.
Recently, David went to NYC and took some pictures as part of his “Broadway Project.” Basically he went more than 25 blocks taking at least one picture on each block. The results of his work can be seen here. I think that giving yourself a project of this magnitude shows the kind of dedication and drive we should all strive for.
All in all, David is a superb photographer. He is one of the best students and teachers DPC has. I hope you will all head into his profile and find some of your favorite work and discuss it here. After doing a dozen of these, I think he’s earned this one.
Congrats to David for his many accomplishments and good luck in the future ones.
Mav

WTG Mav... wondering how long it would take David to get recognized for his own achievements instead of always recognizing others for theirs. You did a very good job laying out the article too, I'm sure Dsidwell will be most proud. He is a great photographer and also a great guy for taking the time to recognize others' work a little extra every week and making a post. It's definitely his time! Keep up the good work Dsidwell and special thanks to Mav for turning dsidwell's spotlight on himself. He is very deserving.

I agree, David is very creative and puts a lot of energy into is photos. Lottie has to be my all time favorite picture on Dpc. It truely shows his ability to use his imagination. Another favorite is Life Span . It seems that every photo tells a story. David is an inspiration to me. I find myself looking for his photos when the challenges are up to see what he came up with.
Thank you David for your presence on dpc!

Excellent. David has made a great impact on DPC, both with his photography and his forum posts (these profiles especially). Nice one Mav.
Favourites? I urge anybody who hasn't to look through his Broadway Project ... and then to try something similar themselves one day. There's some killer shots in there, and it looks like a great learning experience.
The Canyon closups in his Zion portfolio, especially this one, are great studies in colour and texture.
David strikes me as somebody who really does see the world around him rather than letting it all float on by as is so easy to do in the hustle of modern life. An inspiration and an example to us all.

David's work is impressive and enjoyable. His dedication and drive to produce seem to be limitless. I get the impression that he must keep his camera with him and shoot without slowing down (when do the creative ideas come to him). His works like the NYC shoot, Broadway and Zion show a focus on his own growth. His Misc folder contains photos that demonstrate ingenuity and enjoyment of his photography pursuits.
David, I hope you always enjoy shooting and sharing with this community.
My favs -
Stolen Kisses Wonderful use of color and texture.
Fragile Thought provoking
Brickhenge not only fun idea but great angle and perfect lighting to take out some of the texture of the bricks. Superb.
3-D Botany Masterful, truly creative concept that was pulled off in a professional manner.

Hear Hear!....I couldn't agree more. David has always been one of my favourites. Looking at his photography gives me great ideas and receiving any comments from him on my own work I take as a big compliment.
Thanks to Mav for this forum and of course to the 'main man' himself Mr David Sidwell. |

(Pop to the top)
I didn't know if anyone else had this idea and I figure someone could have written it better, but I was tired of waiting for someone to cast the spotlight where I truly feel it's deserved.
And I agree with a simple comment from David is sometimes better than a ribbon. :)

Wow, thanks everyone! It was a real treat to see this. It's kind of a dangerous thing to do though, Mav, when you're on my short-list of photographers waiting to be profiled!
I'm especially flattered by your suggestion that I'm a good learner, for the photographers I profile are all artists from whom I learn--so the thanks and kudos go right back at you.
