i just wanted to give a shout-out to skip and dahkota. they probably have no idea why.

i have shot a local charity concert for the last couple of years. it's a large number of local bands that play together and the money all goes to a great charity here in town. the event is in mid-November. (here's a link to my shots from this year's concert.)

i had been reading about skiprow's and dahkota's various successes getting published in local papers, so i got a bug this year. i sent the concert photos to a local weekly paper that is a division of our daily paper. it's a free paper aimed at 20-30 year olds (nothing like "real" journalism, but kind of a lifestyle paper), but the circulation is around 50,000 per week.

guess what? i had an assignment about 2 days later. ba-boom.

since that time i've had about 5 more jobs from them. some are small (a Pacers player who opened a bar here), some are more in-depth. they're all "lifestyle" stuff (no photojournalism, per se), but they're pretty fun and -- even better -- they pay! it's like dpchallenges with money and fame (ha ha) at the end of the rainbow!

the paper's website only publishes one or two shots for each story, but this week i had a two-page spread full of images. get this -- it was all about an ultimate fighting match at a local bar. hey, it was two full pages though! (story and one measely image are here!)

so, long story short, i just wanted to say thanks to these two for being all inspirational and crap. and hopefully this story gets some of the rest of you thinking about how to get published.

but if you're in indianapolis or thereabouts, back off!! lol.

Muck - that's great!

See - what goes around comes around. I was inspired by you after hanging out in DC - you, Frisca, JPR, and Nick pushed me into working more on my people shots. Got me into the paper business. :)

Excellent work and hope to see much more.

BTW - when are you coming back? its not so far...

Many many congrats!!!!

Indianapolis, you say??? Hmm, that's not too far from me....

too far to steal your limelight though :-) But from the looks of your photos, there's not much chance of that anyways!!

Just leave Central Illinois to us little folk ;-)

Again, big congrats!! Keep us posted on how it goes. It's something I've been thinking about for a while...but haven't gotten the courage to do it yet.

the saga of the outside of the house can be found here. (if you want the short version, it's a sage green with tan trim and chocolate brown on the fishscales in the gables. it sounds wierd, but it totally works.)

no way! your candids were/are SOOO good that weekend. and the fact that you could take them while managing a cigarette in one hand is still miraculous to me. ;)

i DEFINITELY want to come back. if there's a cherry blossom gtg this year, that would be a perfect time to ditch the pack and run around again... lol.

to everyone else:

thanks! i'm sooooo excited about it. some of the assignments are literally snapshots of people at events (there is a column in the paper called "party crashers"), but the story assignments are really cool. i plan to just keep taking every assignment i can (i have two more coming up), and be their last-minute-on-call-guy, while hopefully parlaying that work into more steady gigs with other papers.

now, GO GET PUBLISHED!
