How about these? Shallow enough?

Thanks for posting those samples Rikki but now I have a question.

Shallow DoF in a macro shot can be just a couple of mm's.
Shallow DoF in a portrait shot could be a few inches.
Shallow DoF in a outdoor scene could be a few feet.

As voters, will we be measuring how shallow the DoF is based on the relevance of the shot or will the DNMC crowd be expecting shallow in terms of mm's ? Just asking 'cos I see no point submitting something that will be beat up on by the DNMC crowd but on the other hand I don't want to be the 101st macro entry that people have to vote on.

For the love of Mike, I hope that people will look at the "impact" the shallow DOF has on the picture. If it's a person singled out of a crowd, I'm not gonna quibble that the DOF is as wide as her head.

It's a shallow DOF...to an artistic effect. If you take an extreme macro and only .5 mm of the bee is in focus, you ain't getting a high score from me even though that's pretty shallow.

Thanks Doc.

I hope that line of thinking is now implanted in all voters minds. :)

That's why I just have to shake my head about my horse photo. I'm not saying it's great or anything, just that it has shallow DOF.

And thats why I posed the question because I could see both sides of the arguement.

Technically speaking, a shot either has shallow depth of field or it doesn't. I'm still unsure about why there would be two sides on this. Deep depth of field has everything in focus, and shallow has a very limited plane off focus. It would be like saying your shot here wasn't shallow DOF

Holy crap Brent. How many times do you have to be told. The horse eye isn't shallow DOF. Geez, it's not like you're a photographer or anything. Just kidding!!
This will be a tough one from a judging stand point.

Hi Brent,

I agree with your definition. But after reading the earlier part of this thread I wanted to make sure others, (the majority?), are also thinking this way too.

cheers,
