Many photographers on here either do sell their work already, or would love to sell it if they could.
That means needing to find and please prospective buyers, and taking the right type of photo to do so.
If you take TECHNICALLY BRILLIANT photos of subjects that your customers have NO interest in (or worse still, find repulsive), you won't sell your work.
It matters how people FEEL about photos on a purely emotional level, too. There is more to art than technicalities. |

If you don't have any constructive feedback to say, then keep your mouth shut.
"I DONT LIKE IT." is NOT a valid critique, it is your OPINION....if it were followed up by a "AND THIS IS WHY..." it would be valid.
however, comments like this dont serve any purpose, they give the receiver nothing to work on, and frankly it is rude and childish.
so, if you dont like something, tell me, but at least let me know why and what i could possibly do to improve it.
ok, i'm over it....just a little frustrated with these unhelpful comments.

Frankly, I don't see the difference between "I don't like it" and "Interesting shot." If you do like it, you should say why as well. But I'd rather you say something as opposed to nothing. The box provided says "comment" not "critique"--and whether the commenter likes an image or not is just as valid a comment as any. Useful? Maybe not. But still valid.

The box is actually for comments, not necessarily critiques. If "I don't like it" isn't valid, why do you feel that "I like it" is? Just curious.
Edit: Or what KaDi said.

I would say, yes very useful. Especially if youre scoring a 3. People not liking your image might explain that three.
3 of my last 4 comments have been 1) a one character comment
2) a four letter word
3) a three letter abbriviation
and ever those comments are useful. They in no way help me better my photo, but at least they took time out of thier day to react to my image. Every reaction is vaild, because without reactions you cease to have art. |

I see this almost every challenge....
People say they want comments then start a witch hunt when they disagree with the comments or don't respect the skills of the person commenting (btw, It's a VERY bad assumption looking at the profile to try and judge what the commentator is capiable of producing - Not everybody has serious pictures in the profile of this site). It ain't rocket science folks, everybody can comment because the whole concept is opinion. Like elections, the least hated wins - okay :-)
If you ask me, comments should remain ann. AFTER the voting period also (any really objectionable comments would be deleted like posts of that nature, so it would not be a free for all).
I for one comment less because I know perfectly well that the person taking the picture is going to disagree (from the forum rant topics I see, that is obvious) and it's just not worth my time.
btw - I cannot use the brown bag but would :-) |

Everyone join in, shall we? On the count of three:
Here we go round the mulberry bush, the mulberry bush, the mulberry bush. Here we go round the mulberry bush .....GET THE IDEA!
THE HORSE IS DEAD PEOPLE!
To jmnuggy. I see your points clearly, and agree. I also see that others are willing to and I guess need to get comments on their photos and don't care what they are about, as long as they get them. There are others in the forums right now counting their comments as some kind of possible coop de gra. WHO CARES! Even the ones that are supposed to help you take better pictures can be, YES, STUPID, when you get some that say "more contrast needed" and then right after that it says "less contrast would have been good". Those aren't helpful either. You can't even say WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE? LOL...Because a lot of them do NOT want you to know.
So the bottom line is this: I HATE comments to my photos, others love them, some need them, some count them, some bag them, some don't - yadda yadda yadda. WHOOPEE, America is free, America is beautiful. But to keep beating on this poor horse? Well, I did that last night for HOURS! THAT is what is and was "useless". No matter WHAT you say or come up with as your reasoning, it will be shot to pieces and then followed up on by two or three more vets. They start off by telling you how RUDE you are, but when you read back the first thing out of their mouth was that your "opinion" was "bashing bagheads". LOL....
NOW here comes mk for example. Someone mentioned that saying "I don't like it" is not good and if you say you like it or don't like it to follow up on it. BUT, here comes mk. Only reading ONE part of that and taking it out of context to suit his rebut by saying "If you don't like the I don't like it comments then why don't you feel the same about I like it comments? BUZZZZZ. WRONG reply. They NEVER said that. THEY SAID, EITHER WAY, LEAVE A FOLLOW UP! HELLLLOOOOOO is anyone home? AND THAT is why this thread is now 5 pages long. REDUNDANT replies from those that don't read!
jmnuggy, you do what you want, but this IS a dead horse now. They will NEVER see your words as anything other than "bashing the bagheads". Why? Because a vet said so. End of story.

That was a lot of words for a dead horse.
And actually, her comment didn't say anything about "either way." Perhaps your reading comprehension skills are not as great as you think. She obviously thinks that comments about liking a photo are valid because she's leaving them. I want to know why one was valid and one wasn't. Given that you weren't even part of that conversation, I'm not sure why you felt the need to step in if you feel this thread is so long and redundant. The only one repeating themselves is you. |

Yup, thats me. From day one on this forum I have been called "winded" and even was judged by one vet simply by the amount of "LOL's" I use when I write. Yep, all adult stuff.
I wouldn't have to be so winded if you could get a point using one sentence rather than stating it in paragraphs. Example?......
THIS is what she said.
"Frankly, I don't see the difference between "I don't like it" and "Interesting shot." If you do like it, you should say why as well."
SO, what she is saying here, and I guess you have comprehension problems, is that one should say as well why they like it or dislike it, which is "either way".
By the way, mk does not give any preference to gender. I don't go searching profiles either. Sorry I called you a "he". I guess I should have just called you an IT, or as some use on other forums when they are unsure, a "hir" for her/sir.
This thread is also for everyone, not you and just your croneys. I don't remember seeing you here last night when I spent a great deal of time listening and answering to the likes of many types of "mk's". So, get your own program book.
GEEESH, what a bunch of children!

I don't give two shits about bagged vs bagless comments, or whether you like comments or not. I gotta say though, you're pretty damned obnoxious!
There are probably more people than you think who share your point of view, but I wouldn't expect any of them to jump to your defense with the kind of attitude you're getting on with. For someone with so much "forum experience", you sure don't show it. Wait, maybe you do, bitching and offending people on the internet is what forums are all about right? |

And you would be??? (I guess you have mistaken me for someone who cares). In your post you just summed up the majority of those who would agree with me as being too intimidated to say so. Nice. And who was it that said I stereo typed the vets? LOL....Pasha. I think it is the vets that stereo type the newbies, and make sure they know it at every opportunity.
And you are correct, I can be and am as obnoxious as I am treated. Now you know how I feel about the likes of your posts and those that agree with you. Do you really care? I seriously don't think so. I think you are only here to join the hay ride.
Anway, just wanted to stop by and give my $2 worth. I'm off to submit new entries and be part of better threads. See ya!

So you are saying you are the same as Mk because she reflected your insult to Robert back at you?
Now MK and i have gotten under each others skin once or twice, but i have never seen her act is such an unpalitable way as to compare her to anything even close to the behaviour you has displayed in your short time here.
Maybe you should consider who has be doing all the name calling and badmouthing before you decide which party here is childish. |

You can't have thin skin on this site. The comments are only part of what have improved my photos. Voting and commenting on other photos and then seeing how my opinions differ or are similar to the popular vote at the end of the comp and the assignment like themes have taught me the most. And what exactly does "LOL" mean? You're talking about a seven day wait at most to find out who the baghead is....patience isn't a bad thing to learn either

I started this thread because I am at work and bored, kind of wanted to see what people were feeling. 118 posts later this is still going on. The post I wanted people to reply to was "what do you think the average score of the single light source challenge winner will be"
I asked this because I personally think the score will be low. People will either love em or hate em. It won't be a landscape type vote where the winner is pretty much loved by all. |

I will only respond to your last sentence. The rest of it is nonsense. Your last sentence though? Go back to the beginning of this thread and read bear-musics reply to jmuggy. Then tell me about antagonizing and ridicule and who is childish or not. Then read on - and you will see again that everytime a newbie posted there were 4-5 vets coming in succession of each other to "eat them alive".
Just because I write forcefully and do not succumb to intimidation, that has made me the master of rudeness? Look at Kadi's last "cackling" comment? Another hay ride antendee jumping on the wagon? AND how many times has a vet here made some sly, ridiculous remark only to have those like YOU follow up with your one liners of "rofl", and "can I be your croney?", and other stupidity. Did you see me doing that with jmuggy in regards to your posts to us?
NO, if no one comes on this thread to stand behind my views, it isn't because of MY attitude, it is because of the attitude of "most" vets here in this forum and the reputations you have made for yourselves elsewhere.
Quite frankly? I'm a little shocked this thread hasn't been locked!

LOL means "Laugh out loud". Don't do it too often though. When I did I was told "now I know what kind of person you are". Laughing around here is usually only in regards to ridicule and ganging up on others. It usually isn't well received in other circumstances.

Thank you for having the guts to start this thread by the way. I watched for a bit before putting in my view, and what I saw was two fold - amazing, yet predicted.
As for the single light source, I opted for the other challenge of camo, so I really can't say. However, in going by my own scores so far, I think that being in the 5's is normally good, however, not so when there are more entries then in other challenges. I noticed that in some challenges some won who had averages in the high 6's, and then one would think 5's was good, but with so many entries, 5's really is the middle the road. So I guess it would depend on how many entries in Light Source. In guestimating, if there are like 200+ entries, you would have to stay in the high 6's to low 7's to place the top 10. Just a theory based on my own research.
