You know Sonifo you miss my entire point in the original post I made.

I am talking right now for me and me alone so maybe you can understand a little more why this bothered me and why I originally posted this rant. Imagine a writer of a play telling the story of an event in their life that was traumatic and by writing the play they work through emotions and feelings they felt while living the experience. Do you think they cared if someone else approved of their feelings? Do you think they would look at someone else’s play to see what worked for them and there by find approval in some else’s opinion of their experience? I don’t think that would happen.

If a painter wanted to express his feelings in their art would they copy the colors of another like Monet or Rembrandt to make sure theirs looked the same as to find approval in what others thought of their work? Or a poet, would he try to copy the style of Poe so as to assure his success with the masses? I think you get my point.

This is not to say we can’t learn from others. I will be learning till the day I die, if I ever think I have arrived I need to take a pill and lay down myself and get a grip of reality. I read books; I learn about lighting styles and look to recreate the effects I learn in these books to improve my skill. I also read the “How did they do that” forums too. I try to get the hang of a new Photoshop technique a week to improve me editing. I would never copy outright the styles and techniques given as examples I learn and call them mine own and try to sell them or enter them in a challenge. I will take everything I have garnered and get out and try to express myself and my feelings with all of them.

As I had said before, I was a part time magician for 15 years and met many really cool people who taught me a lot of useful things I could perform. I would never outright copy any trick I was taught. The principles and technique I would adapt to my own style. Here is an example, there are millions of pick a card tricks, many look exactly the same, I can’t tell you how they were done but I can tell you in my act I only did one and did it as a joke with my audience telling them I had to do this trick or I would get kicked out of the magician’s union. That is a tiny example of one thing I did in my act to make it my own.

In my photography I have decided I don’t care about pleasing the voters here, I am expressing myself with my photography. I do this because I love it, if one of my images scores high great if not well that’s fine, I didn’t post it for the score, I have come to learn it is part of who I am and not everyone will like it, some will but I do and that’s what matters. See what I mean?

There is nothing wrong with looking at someone’s blue ribbon image and seeing the comments and what it was that made them successful. To think that if you were to copy that completely and there by win a ribbon yourself, well it really wouldn’t be your ribbon would it?

I love taking pictures of NYC and the skyline, think it’s been done before? Yea a little I think, LOL, but when I took my pictures, well the lighting was different, the tint was different and the focus was different and I am different.

There is someone on this site who copied one of my pictures exactly and started selling it on his Print Store. He shot from the exact same spot I did, he did change the image using Photoshop there by making it his own that way, but had I not shared with him the location, he never would have shot that picture. Does it bother me? Well a little, but hey I have my original file which shows I shot mine in June. I also have pictures from that same spot my dad shot back in the 50’s. I admit, I was coping my dad’s photos, guilty.

Everything in the world has been shot millions of times, your style, your emotions; your gear and your skill make it yours. Trust that you have what it takes to make a great shot and don’t depend on coping others, you will never be great if you do, you will only be as good as they were. Why limit yourself?

I could agree with this statement if the photos you showed at the onset were indeed exact duplicates, but I fear that the duplication exists only in your mind. The concept may be similar, but to suggest that these two images are duplicates is ludicrous at best.

I wonder if that is true? A great photo must have a message, it must say something, it must have a 'soul'.
What do you think is the message of these first two photos? Are they really different? What they 'say' will determine this IMO.....

Maybe so, but one must wonder if the ridiculousness (is that a word?) is the unwillingness to discuss and question....

What they say to me may not be what they say to you, and as such I fear that this issue will never be resolved.

I must also point out that each of these photos say different things to me, and as such there is no possible way they are duplications of each other....... As a matter of fact, they don't even speak the same language... one speaks to me in english while the other speaks to me in french.... It's all so complicated.

Actually MPRPRO, I have taken this picture of Devils Tower and have sold it and even have it up on a local hotel here. I went to Devils tower and seen one just like it in the gift shot there just about a month ago. hmm..who took that shot first..not sure, but it really doesnt bother me.

I don't see how you see the first place shot looking just like mine. She used a different background, clothes and also used neatimage. The subject was placed in the same rule of thirds but that is about all I see. I do agree that you shouldn't copy the photo and make it look exactly alike. That is robbing them of their image. But there is nothing wrong with looking at the photo and getting ideas that help make a better photo. That is why the make photography books to help open your creativity and give you ideas.
Being a portrait photographer I tend to get stuck with the same old stuff..so looking at other PRO photos helps me to get that "wow" back and please my clients more. That is why they love my work so much.
Most of my collages were straight out of a book. And from doing those I have learned to be more creative and venture out doing my own collages.

Photography isn't like writing, plays or magic shows. Most everyone has a camera and takes pictures. When you go on vacation you see at least 5 people standing next to each other taking a picture of the same thing. You don't push them aside and say I thought of this first. You just except that he or she is wanting the same kewl photo.

I also love to take a picture that pleases the voters..I guess that is what makes me different. I don't take a picture for myself unless it is of my children, but then again I do need those to be perfect too. LOL..I know I am anal when it comes to photography. It's the perfectionist coming out in me. It's easy to please yourself but the true challenge for me is..making others happy with what I shoot.

Always challenge yourself to 'hear' what photo's and art pieces are saying.....we communicate with different types of language.....you must understand these languages to understand what the message is, otherwise they have no real meaning.......it is always more than just what 'you' interpret....otherwise, the artist has failed..........

This rant didn’t bother me at first because I knew I was being true to myself, and my vision when I shot this picture. I did not go out with the intent to copy someone else’s "successful" shot. It's my daughter in the picture, a special and tender moment that I captured and am so proud of and will cherish for years to come. Who are you to assume my intent and repeatedly accuse me of "copying"? You make me out to be a shallow and greedy person. I happen to love this shot, ribbon or not. The fact that others enjoyed it and voted it so high was icing on the cake for me.

I haven’t picked up a camera creatively in 12 years. Joining this site and having a hobby is the first thing I have done for me in a very long time. I have spent years neglecting myself to take care of others. It's a shame that you want to place a stigma on me without knowing me. It makes me sorry now that my picture was noticed and that I actually felt good about myself for a moment. Thanks for ruining my moment you big jerk :P

Aww..I wouldn't let him bug you like that. You have a wonderful photo. There is always someone out there that has to ruin it for others. To me your photo looks nothing like mine.. it was a very creative shot that you should be very proud of. And your daughter is beautiful! Be proud! You deserve the blue ribbon! (((hug)))

Soni could take a photo with her ass and it would be better than my best effort. I think it's only copying if I do well, too.
