Just scanned as many posts as I could - adding some I can think of that may be redundant. Music for me always brings back specific memories and brings back feelings I went through during that period.
In the 70s there were all those ballads:
Cats in the cradle
Billy Don't be a Hero
The night Chicago Died
One Tin Soldier
Other 70's (or earlier):
Leavin on a jet plane (heard this when I was 17 saying goodbye to my girlfriend as I left for Navy bootcamp)
Leo Sayer - When I need you
Elton John - Candle in the wind
Elton John - Daniel
Simon & Garfunkel - Homeward Bound
Eagles - Best of my Love
Eagles - Tequila Sunrise
In the 80's...
Heart - Alone
REO Speedwagon - Keep on loving you
REO Speedwagon - Take it on the run
Journey - Faithfully
Journey - Open Arms
Cinderella - Don't know what you got
Phil Collins - Take a look at me now
Lynyrd Skynyrd - Free Bird
Bob Seger - We've got tonight
Meat Loaf - Two out of Three Aint Bad
90's (?)...
Don Henley - The end of the innocence
Eric Clapton - Tears in Heaven
Hmmm...??? seems I didn't listen to much music in this decade
Misc / Spiritual:
Amazing Grace
There is none like you
I will never be the same again
Jesus Lover of my Soul
Ones from the past that I am embarassed to confess to (well, more embarassed than the others anyway):
Debbie Boone - "You light up my life" (around the time of my "coming of age" so to speak)
Kenny Rogers - "Ruby" and "Lucille"
Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warren - "Up where we belong" (theme to "An Officer and a Gentleman")
Dan Fogelberg - Leader of the Band
-------------
On a related note - is it just me or can everyone remember the lyrics to almost any song on your list when the music starts playing? |

Though not in English, Nessun Dorma, from the opera Turandot is so beautiful that it always moves me to tears.
Ne Me Quittes Pas by Jacques Brel is the saddest song Iâve ever heard. It was translated by Rod McKuen as If You Go Away, and is fairly true to the original, though not quite as poignant:
If you go away on this summer day
Then you might as well take the sun away
All the birds that flew in the summer sky
When our love was new and our hearts were high
When the day was young and the night was long
And the moon stood still for the night bird's song
If you go away, if you go away
If you go away, if you go away
But if you stay, I'll make you a day
Like no day has been, or will be again
We'll sail the sun, we'll ride on the rain
We'll talk to the trees and worship the wind
Then if you go, I'll understand
Leave me just enough love to fill up my hand
If you go away, if you go away
If you go away, if you go away
If you go away, as I know you must
There'll be nothing left in the world to trust
Just an empty room, full of empty space
Like the empty look I see on your face
I'd have been the shadow of your dog
If I thought it might have kept me by your side
If you go away, if you go away
If you go away, please don't go away
Chanson des Vieux Amants, also by Brel is perhaps the most exquisite yet bizarre love song Iâve ever heard. It means "song of the Old Lovers", and tells a story of a very French long-term love.
Another French language song that never fails to move me is Le Mot France by Richard Cocciant. Itâs a love song to a country, and is almost worth learning the language to see the purity and heart-wrenching love shown in this song.
Finally, another John Denver song, though I like Peter Paul and Maryâs version best)!
[b]Leaving On a Jet Plane[/b}
All my bags are packed
Iâm ready to go
Iâm standinâ here outside your door
I hate to wake you up to say goodbye
But the dawn is breakinâ
Itâs early morn
The taxiâs waitinâ
Heâs blowinâ his horn
Already Iâm so lonesome
I could die
So kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that youâll wait for me
Hold me like youâll never let me go
âcause Iâm leavinâ on a jet plane
Donât know when Iâll be back again
Oh babe, I hate to go
Thereâs so many times Iâve let you down
So many times Iâve played around
I tell you now, they donât mean a thing
Evâry place I go, Iâll think of you
Evâry song I sing, Iâll sing for you
When I come back, Iâll bring your wedding ring
So kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that youâll wait for me
Hold me like youâll never let me go
âcause Iâm leavinâ on a jet plane
Donât know when Iâll be back again
Oh babe, I hate to go
Now the time has come to leave you
One more time
Let me kiss you
Then close your eyes
Iâll be on my way
Dream about the days to come
When I wonât have to leave alone
About the times, I wonât have to say
Oh, kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that youâll wait for me
Hold me like youâll never let me go
âcause Iâm leavinâ on a jet plane
Donât know when Iâll be back again
Oh babe, I hate to go
But, Iâm leavinâ on a jet plane
Donât know when Iâll be back again
Oh babe, I hate to go
Words and music by john Denver

ah...if i include classical music and opera then Nessun Dorma is definitely one that makes me cry. also Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings and the Intermezzo from Pietro Mascagni's Cavalleria Rusticana.

regardless of the same name, it has nothing to do with Green Day. My most emotive song os Kurt Wiell's Boulevard Of Broken Dreams sang by Marianne Faithfull:
I walk along the street of sorrow
The boulevard of broken dreams
Where gigolo and gigalette
Can take a kiss without regret
So they forget their broken dreams
You laugh tonight and cry tomorrow
When you behold your shattered dreams
And gigolo and gigalette
Awake to find their eyes are wet
With tears that tell of broken dreams
Here is where you'll always find me
Always walking up and down
But I left my soul behind me
In an old cathedral town
The joy that you find here you borrow
You cannot keep it long it seems
But gigolo and gigalette
Still sing a song and dance along
Boulevard of broken dreams

First song to make me cry was after I lost my first girlfriend was hearing "Crying" by Roy Orbison.
Years later when I was in Naval tech school, in Brunswick Georgia, before shipping to Vietnam, Brook Benton's "Rainy Night In Georgia."
The last song that actually made me slurpy was hearing "Butterfly Kisses" by Bob Carlisle on the radio after my middle daughter (of three) turned 19 and moved into her own apartment.

I second Sher's Bonnie Raitt - that song is just so sad...
I second Kpriest's "Amazing Grace" especially when done with bagpipes - it usually means a cop or firefighter is dead when I hear it.
Another song: Biko by Peter Gabriel:
"September '77
Port Elizabeth weather fine
It was business as usual
In police room 619
Ah Biko, Biko
Because Biko
Yihla Moja, Yihla Moja
The man is dead
The man is dead
When I try and sleep at night
I can only dream in red
The outside world is black and white
With only one color dead
You can blow out a candle
But you can't blow out a fire
Once the flames begin to catch
The wind will blow it higher
And the eyes of the world
Are watching me now
Watching me now"
And this line from Peter Gabriel's "Here Comes the Flood:"
"Drink up Dreamers, you're running dry"
Edited because I forgot to add: Pink Floyd - "Wish you were Here"

quite much!
Among the latest songs for me I'd say "Veinte años" from Bebo Valdés' and Diego "el Cigala"'s "Lagrimas Negras" (Black tears) CD. An amazingly soul stirring work by any standards. Give it a try, even if you don't understand spanish and will feel the music's moving power.
Edit: I've been reading through Amazon's customer reviews for this record and can't agree more whith every one of them. As someone there says, make yourself a favor an GET this record. I even learnt that you get english translations in the US CD booklet

Crazy Frog
genuinely, I can't bear the thought that kids today think mobile ringtones are music, are buying it and making it one of the biggest selling singles this year in the UK.
Also the money spinning disgrace that is X-Factor which has nothing to do with music and everything to do with making cash from phone voting
Generally the decline of songwriters and bands
Steve
p.s. Tears in Heaven by Clapton and Let Down by Radiohead (listening to it just now) are both contenders.

"Big Bottom" by Spinal Tap.
Has me in tears, on the floor each time I hear it.
***Big Bottom***
The bigger the cushion, the sweeter the pushin'
That's what I said
The looser the waistband, the deeper the quicksand
Or so I have read
My baby fits me like a flesh tuxedo
I'd like to sink her with my pink torpedo
Big bottom, big bottom
Talk about bum cakes, my girl's got 'em
Big bottom drive me out of my mind
How could I leave this behind?
I met her on Monday, twas my lucky bun day
You know what I mean
I love her each weekday, each velvety cheek day
You know what I mean
My love gun's loaded and she's in my sights
Big game is waiting there inside her tights, yeah
Big bottom, big bottom
Talk about mud flaps, my girl's got 'em
Big bottom drive me out of my mind
How could I leave this behind?

Since I first saw this thread I have wanted to post but I have been unable to compose myself long enough to get this down so it has been a work in progress, here goes.
Over ten years ago when I lived in Western Australia there was a horrific mass murder of a young mother with two very young daughters and a teenage son. They were bludgeoned to death by a drug induced axe wielding maniac at a secluded farm house in the country.
Apparently the son had only recently reunited with the family, he tried to defend the family from the maniac, that boy died a hero fighting to save the lives of his new family.
At Danielâs combine family funeral the media coverage showed his coffin being carried into the Church by his step- brothers crying in absolute distraught bouts of grief as was everyone, it was a heart wrenching scene.
The music that was playing was Elton Johns âDanielâ
Daniel is travelling tonight on a plane
I can see the red tail lights heading for Spain
Oh and I can see Daniel waving goodbye
God it looks like Daniel, must be the clouds in my eyes
They say Spain is pretty though I've never been
Well Daniel says it's the best place that he's ever seen
Oh and he should know, he's been there enough
Lord I miss Daniel, oh I miss him so much
Daniel my brother you are older than me
Do you still feel the pain of the scars that won't heal
Your eyes have died but you see more than I
Daniel you're a star in the face of the sky
Daniel is travelling tonight on a plane
I can see the red tail lights heading for Spain
Oh and I can see Daniel waving goodbye
God it looks like Daniel, must be the clouds in my eyes
Oh God it looks like Daniel, must be the clouds in my eyes
To this day Iâm totally unable to listen to this song without crying, doesnât matter where or when I will bawl my eyes out when this song comes on.
I have cried and cried just tying to get this down it was such a emotional visual scene with music that engulfed everyone.
Such a powerful media.

Quite a thread -- cried several times as I passed songs
One that I didn't see mentioned -- Forever Young -- sung by Joan Biaz (a bit more bittersweet than Rob Stewart's version)
... and May you stay Forever Young |
