and when you find him he will be a "sure thing".. no strings attached no guilt involved. :P

another good song is The Parting Glass. Anyone ever watched Waking Ned Devine?

Oh all the money that e'er I had, I spent it in good company
And all the harm that e'er I've done, alas, it was to none but me
And all I've done for want of wit to memory now I can't recall
So fill to me the parting glass, good night and joy be with you all

Oh all the comrades that e'er I've had, they are sorry for my going away
And all the sweethearts that e'er I've had, they would wish me one more day to stay
But since it falls unto my lot that I should rise and you should not
I'll gently rise and I'll softly call good night and joy be with you all

If I had money enough to spend and leisure time to sit awhile
There is a fair maid in this town, that sorely has my heart beguiled
Her rosy cheeks and ruby lips I own, she has my heart enthralled
So fill to me the parting glass, good night and joy be with you all

My dearest dear, the time draws near when here no longer can I stay
There's not a comrade I leave behind, but is grieving for my going away
But since it has so ordered been what is once past can't be recalled
Now fill to me the parting glass, good night and joy be with you all

If I had money for to spend, If I had time to waste away
There is a fair maid in this town, I feign would while her heart away
With her rosy cheeks and dimpled chin, my heart she has beguiled awa'
So fill to me the parting glass, good night and joy be with you a'

If I had money for to spend, I would spend it in her company
And all the harm that I have done, I hope it's pardoned I will be
And all I've done for want of it to memory I can't recall
So fill to me the parting glass, good night and joy be with you all

A man may drink and not be drunk, a man may fight and not be slain
A man may court a pretty girl and perhaps be welcomed back again
But since it has so ordered been by a time to rise and a time to fall
Come fill to me the parting glass, good night and joy be with you all

So funny you say this as when we met at the first Yooper GTG I was thinking in my head that you sorta resembled John Denver - no kidding!

I completely forgot..

.. just about every soulful (are there really many that aren't?) bagpiped song.

Particularly the song they play during the funeral scene in Braveheart where William's uncle says they are playing outlawed tunes on outlawed pipes.. heck both of the CDs associated with the movie get me teary on a regular basis.

Guaranteed cryfest for me...
" If I Had Only Known" by Reba McEntire
Oh man, that is a sad song. I'm not much of a country fan, but that song gets me every time.

I was raised to love John Denver, though. Do you know he has a song called "Daddy' don't get drunk at Christmas"?

When he died, it was like an uncle in my family died. I called my Dad crying and said, "I wish he'd known how much he meant to our family." My Dad said, "He knew." I said, "I know, he had a lot of fans..." and my Dad said, "No, he knew. I did a beach cleanup with him years ago and I told him how I raised my kids listening to his music." I was so happy! :)

I forgot this one!!

REO---"Time For Me To Fly"--

Story behind it: My Dad took me to the beach (Daytona), to watch the very first Space Shuttle launch-- And there was a radio station out of Orlando (WDIZ), I cant believe I remember them call letters but I do, anyway, they Played Time for me to Fly, at the exact moment the Space Shuttle was lifting off, that will be sketched in my Mind forever--

I later had the unfortunate viewing of Columbia blowing up in the sky..
But I digress..

Sunshine On My Shoulders, by John Denver, sappy I know but what can I say.

Ok, I can't believe I'm admitting to this, but since I've already divulged other sappy songs...*deep breath*

The duet by Eponine and Marius on Les Miserables. It's right before she dies and they're singing "A Little Fall of Rain." For those who don't know the story, Eponine is in love with Marius and pretty much would do anything for him and yes, in a way, died for him. But Marius is in love with Cosette, who I personally think is a spoiled brat.

Yeah, it was pretty embarrassing being in a suit and tie in a sold out theatre and sobbing madly!

I laugh about it now, of course.

When I'm Gone - Phil Ochs (And whether you agree with his political views is beside the point. The song is amazing)

I didn't think anyone else here would remmber Phil Ochs -- he wrote a lot of beautiful stuff. Here's what I think is one of his saddest, commemorating the death (as he saw it) of democracy:

William Butler Yeats Visits Lincoln Park and Escapes Unscathed
By Phil Ochs

As I went out one evening to take the evening air
I was blessed by a blood-red moon
In Lincoln Park the dark was turning

I spied a fair young maiden and a flame was in her eyes
And on her face lay the steel blue skies
Of Lincoln Park, the dark was turning
Turning

They spread their sheets upon the ground just like a wandering tribe
And the wise men walked in their robes, yeah robes
Through Lincoln Park the dark was turning

The towers trapped and trembling, and the boats were tossed about
When the fog rolled in and the gas rolled out
From Lincoln Park the dark was turning
Turning

Like wild horses freed at last we took the streets of wine
But I searched in vain for she stayed behind
In Lincoln Park the dark was turning

I'll go back to the city where I can be alone
And tell my friend she lies in stone
In Lincoln Park the dark was turning

My leading candidate for World's Most Depressing Song is still:

Running Dry (Requiem for the Rockets)
by Neil Young

Oh please help me, oh please help me
I'm livin' by myself
I need someone to comfort me
I need someone to tell

I'm sorry for the things I've done
I've shamed myself with lies
But soon these things are overcome
And can't be recognized

I left my love with ribbons on
And water in her eyes
I took from her the love I'd won
And turned it to the skies

I'm sorry for the things I've done
I've shamed myself with lies
My cruelty has punctured me
And now I'm running dry

I'm sorry for the things I've done
I've shamed myself with lies
But soon these things are overcome
And can't be recognized

Cat's and the Cradle by Harry Chapin - mostly because I lost my father at an early age and I was on course to live out this song without realizing it.

regardless of the same name, it has nothing to do with Green Day. My most emotive song os Kurt Wiell's Boulevard Of Broken Dreams sang by Marianne Faithfull:

I walk along the street of sorrow
The boulevard of broken dreams
Where gigolo and gigalette
Can take a kiss without regret
So they forget their broken dreams

You laugh tonight and cry tomorrow
When you behold your shattered dreams
And gigolo and gigalette
Awake to find their eyes are wet
With tears that tell of broken dreams

Here is where you'll always find me
Always walking up and down
But I left my soul behind me
In an old cathedral town

The joy that you find here you borrow
You cannot keep it long it seems
But gigolo and gigalette
Still sing a song and dance along
Boulevard of broken dreams

Hey! I went to see Marianne Faithful a couple of years ago when she came out on tour..... fabulous!

Even though I'm in the Navy, I'm not Ms. Patriotic or anything but when we were deployed to the gulf he had a talent show one a night and a guy sang "Proud to be An American". There was not a dry eye in the room, including mine. Even to this date my eyes will get watery if I listen to it.

Oh, yes! I sobbed during that part of Les Miz, too!

Don't you fret, M'sieur Marius
I don't feel any pain
A little fall of rain
Can hardly hurt me now
You're here, that's all I need to know
And you will keep me safe
And you will keep me close
And rain will make the flowers grow.

So touching!
