A photo is a photo.
I hope people judge photos based on emotional content and not if they assume it hides something, the photographer couldn't get a "color shot" or some other criteria. If the photo has a voice, who cares how it happened.
But I understand that with hundreds of photos to look at, often people make snap judgements and look more for the faults rather than the interesting angles. |

Problem is the challange is light on white, using sepia or B&W or High Key ect dosent meet the challange in my opinion and the first criteria we aer told to vote on is if it meets the challange. Using High Key will usually blow the highlights, fails challange, sepia and b&w alter color charistics alot, the background could be bright yellow and you would never know, challange was to have a white one. I look at this as it is a photography challange not a photo editing challange.
But hey thats me, I took my shot and it aint doing great right now

Can such a score climb to a 5.01? I will be crossing my fingers. Looking over the other pics though, I can't see how mine is too bad, unless the "nemesise method" of voting is pervasive... |

Well, I think the key words are "In your opinion". I can see where you are coming from but the challenge rules did not state this is a color challenge.
The difficulty is not getting color right...the difficulty is getting a photo worth looking at. I see lots of technically correct photos but they are often just repeating what has been done in coffee table books.
Hopefully there is equal room out there for photographers to produce
curious and obscure photos in addition to perfectly focused, color corrected and saturated photos. But I am sorta obscure and non-color corrected anyway :-D |

Oh Brennan you flatter me. But my shot is just one of these middle of the road I guess. I just got lucky for the first few votes :) |

I don't see anything in the challenge description that precludes B&W. In fact, I'd say it's technically MORE difficult to do light on white in B&W than it is in color. In B&W it's a LOT more difficult to render subtleties of bright values and still separate them, where with color the "light" component can be separated visually just BECAUSE it has a hint of color in it.

I'll take that as a compliment...
You still have alot of time for the score to move up. ANd am sure yours will Doc, I like your work alot.
And Hokie take what I say with a grain of salt, if one were to compare our profiles and our past shots, they would easily see your the superior photographer, I am still learning. |

Don't worry, I wasn't busting on you. You can certainly vote any way you want. It just hadn't crossed my mind that it might be an issue and I changed mine to B&W even though the color was fairly light on white anyway.
Thanks for the vote of confidence...

The night is young my friend. Many weird things have happened to scores overnight. :D Mine was a last minute entry as well. As usual, done in the office for the lack of shooting time. Oh well :) |

Hey nemesise1977, please don't let my response to you be taken as anything but open discussion of photographic and artistic thought.
The cool thing about this sight and photography is there are no black and white answers (pun intended). My biggest challenge when I first came to this site was to loosen up about my photography and not take too much stock in scoring. Things like soft focus, heavy contrast, grain or other techniques that may take your score down in the eyes of the general voter can be the very technique that allows you to express yourself the most.
We all hope (myself included) that people like our efforts. The only thing I think a photographer should worry about is whether they feel they are getting what they need from their experiences and these challenges are a great way to grow and share ideas.
Now lets all get in here and have a group hug :-D ....lol |

Well, I'm glad to see I'm in good company! Does it seem that the scoring is AWFULLY low? You think the voters know what "Light on White" means? Maybe they're looking for an actual light, or light bulb, or ray of light on a white background!

Well, mine was just above 7 for a short while, now it's just under 6 :-(
Anyway, the really good thing is that one commenter said it at least deserves a ribbon (paraphrasing a bit, there). |

Good point, I was a little dissapointed and worried when I saw that the winners in this challenge last time where pretty much b/w. I was mad thinking that they didn't meet the challenge of "light" color but have since reconsidered this and think they did a good job.
Mine on the other hand will probably not be considered a light enough color. I did attempt to shoot something different and this was way beyond anything I've ever done on so many different levels but still sitting at an even 4.0 with 2 comments. (I have faith that it will rise in the last day, they always seem to)

I knew mine was going to stink, but I didn't realise it would *STINK*! I'm a little upset though - I thought it was site policy that you must include a comment on les than 3.. "If you feel a photograph deserves a vote of 1, 2 or 3, please include a comment with your vote explaining why you felt it deserved a "below average" score". I do for all the ones that I vote below 3 - do we think this rule should be enforced or would that just lead to comments like "you suck", "boring photo" etc etc? |

I hope more people will shoot photos and submit to challenges without feeling like they need to prepare a studio perfect shot.
This week I bought a new lens and was experimenting and found a couple of shots that I liked that met the challenge so I entered. The photos were done in about 20 minutes with just some leveling and cropping. What the shot lacks in technical polish it makes up for in emotional content and a few of the comments I have received so far reflect this.
I hope my next phase here at DPChallenge after 3 years off will consist of more of this type of "shoot it and move on" photography rather than the searching and prepping for each challenge method I used when I got my first digital camera 4 years ago. When I did a lot of prep and forced shots it seemed liked I put more emphasis on scores and many of my photos...while often times well exposed, properly focused and meeting the challenge felt too sterile...
Most of my better photos are grab shots while many of my longest set-ups are my least satisfying shots (but I learned a lot from them!) I remember the frustration of watching the low scores come in on shots I took a lot of time to prepare :-/
