Bod, I like dj07. I think the lighting here is excellent.. I definitely like the creative use of lighting on this image as well as the composition. There is a little bit of strange color cast on the surface below the headphones that looks a touch out of place in this generally monotone image. I think if you desaturated all the channels except maybe yellow, you could even that out and keep the gold plated jack in nice color... good work :)

Cheers John, The 'colour cast' is unfortunately caused by the cheap material I bought at the weekend (does anybody have any tips for inexpensive backdrop material?). Thanks for the tip for getting rid of it, I'll have a go after work tomorrow.

I liked 07 and 08 best... Nice composition on them...
My wife sews so I have fabric all over the house... It makes great backdrops and fabric stores sell irregular scraps for low prices... |

Thanks myqyl (you need to change your name! - my brain keeps registering it as mysql)
I guess I'll keep buying pieces till I find one that works - the one I bought was only £1.50 per meter off a market stall so it's cheap enough. It seems fine until I get a light too close to it

Bod, I use the foam core posterboard from walmart. It's cheap and easy to work with. Certain cloths have reflective properties that make things difficult... Fleece works fairly well most times, ad does flanel... It all depends on what you want your background to look like...

Hey bod --
I like #7 best -- the angles and soft light really make a nice semi-abstract picture that is attractive to the eye. Of course, I really like the way #4 seems to come from the front of the frame -- that was the first one that jumped out at me.
I have used black velvet (fake velvet) as a background before and that has worked pretty well -- of course, I have cats, so keeping it fur-free is a total b*tch. But I've found that it really soaks up the light and allows the foreground to pop out. For lighter backgrounds, get a roll of cheap butcher paper and bump up the lighting -- it almost disappears.

recommendation I saw for backgrounds is to go to Walmart, in the fabric dept. (Or any fabric store) you can buy most cloth for a few dollars per yard.

John, you were spot on! I've done as you suggested and I'm very happy with the results. I've updated the gallery with 'b' revisions so you can see the difference. With dj02 (probably my personal favourite) I've completely desaturated because the jack isn't in shot - I'm *very* happy with the effect :)
Thanks to everyone who's offered fabric advice. I'm not sure we have anything like Walmart over here (looks like they sell everything!) but I have a better idea of what to look for.

Remnant kings or something like that in the UK probably has it too - anywhere that sells fabric by the yard/ meter - it costs only a couple of pounds/ dollars per meter/ yard and you only need two or three

When you're travelling up & down the country all the time you quickly learn how easy it is for headphones to get lost/damaged/stolen. You end up buying something cheapish - so long as they're comfortable & loud.
Now that I'm "retired" (!!!) I may take your advice (though the $330 set will have to wait a while!) :)
