I made the mistake of including some organic elements in my photo that some think are my branch ... they're not looking at the subject of the photo which has a very clear branch theme to it ...

-sigh-

Of course that's only two of the seven comments. My score seems to be holding above 5.5, so some folks are probably getting it.

I obviously didn't frame my composition properly to draw out the "branches" that I see so clearly. Live and learn.

Jmritz - of course sometimes I think that commenters just go around cutting and pasting the same comment "I wish there was more branch in this picture so that it could be on topic."

I am about 60% done with the voting on the branch challenge. I am finding that I am voting most people with a non-tree branches higher because I find their shots more creative and so many tree branches are so similar. So to counter the idea that tree branches will score higher because they more obviously fit the challenge, for me they aren't doing as well. Of course if there are enough people on both sides of the debate the scores will even out.

I think most photos will be voted based on whether the viewer can identify a "branch" immediately, whether literal or figurative.

This gives me an idea... 10's for anything with a wooden branch in it, and 1's for the rest! I'm going to try it out & see if my votes get filtered.

Here's the math, read it and weep:

Shots involving tree branches = about 329, or 76%.
Shots not involving tree branches = about 104, or 24%.

So what does this mean? The 24% of OOTBers aren't really all that special?

But we're still more special. =)
b/c of the 104 how many are of the same subject?

Come on strikeslip, dont be crazy now! LOL, rationalize I know its hard, but there are some photos in this that really deserve good scores. (not mine, but somewhere)

wow... that took a while. Need to go through it again.(Ugh) I was a touch surprised at the number of cranes. And darn it no one did any highly suggestive shots... ya know Title: Dead Wood
Shot: Bleached Dead branch with perspective from very close to the branch out along it as it stretches out over a scene of two people on a blanket out somewhere. (in very clear focus in the foreground of the frame on the branch we see a little blue pill.

:)

Does anyone else have the problem of great ideas but no way to honestly do them ? /sigh

Voting on that lot hurt much more than Shoes :(

I'd like to be able to vote on everything without seeing a title. 92.3147% of the titles were crap. I didn't read the rest...

I'll come back tomorrow to add some more comments and start sorting 5s into 4s and 6s into 5s and 7s :D I think I already know the 8s and 9s. If I have another glass of Scotch I'll find a 10 or even an 11 ....

Did anyone else keep expecting to see training shoes dangling from branches?

Minor grumble here: I'm finally gutting it out anf going back into this one to finish voting, and I can't help thinking to myself "Why do so many people think TRUNKS are BRANCHES?" I mean, in the context of a tree, you have trunks and branches jut out from them. I've made a conscious decision not to let that affect me though; I'm treating trunks as big branches for definition purposes. But it offends my sense of precision-in-language...

Yeah, this whole challenge left me feeling blah. I try to rate each shot on it's own merit, but when you've seen 200 trees, it's kind of hard not to just lump them all together.

I'm looking forward to the perspective challenge. There will lots of varied entries in that one. I fear Portraits will have many snapshots of people's little kids. That's not a bad thing, but I'm emphasizing the snapshot here.

I agree. That drove me nuts too. That and palm "branches". Those are palm *fronds*.

was the topic branch??? I pulled my orginal entry because it was a plural of branch..so obviously in this challenge branches are ok? I thought it was just branch, in the singular form.

Newbie here.. first challenge I entered is the Branch one... there is so much negativity around this challenge I have to admit its a bit disheartening. Isnt art subjective.. isnt it different for each person? The challenge was Branch... and interpretation is what art is. Perhaps the tree trunk signifies a persons journey.. perhaps they have never taken the time to branch out of themselves and actually see the beauty of a tree trunk?
I was very excited to start getting involved in challenges.. *still am* but a little disillusioned by much of the negativity. This is a place for me to come and learn and expand and grow... Branch was a fairly safe place for me to take that first step in the learning journey... I dont know much about the tech. side of photography.. I do know what draws emotion out of me. I know what I like and dont like .. not necessarily all of the in's and out's necessarily but i'm willing to learn.
So some people took pictures of canopy's of branches and tree trunks and perhaps to you they arent art.. to them tho? Who are we to say?

I'm doing well in the challenge... getting amazing comments over 28 so far... and all validating what I knew needed to be fixed in my image.. so its been a great challenge for the new person.

Thanks everyone for being part of my exploration and journey into this pretty magical world of photog's

Very well put Shecoya. I agree with you. Just keep entering photos that you like. Don't get too discouraged, and most importantly...have fun!
