Two parts of the exercise, 20 each! And they better not all be good Ursula ;)
REVISED: Thinking about the long blogs that would cause, how about the posting the last 10 for each.

10 and 10 sounds fine. Much better than 40.
I read in a different book that one of the best ways to "get better" at photography is to be very ruthless with yourself, and never, that is never, show bad stuff. I think I have posted way too much bad stuff already :)

If you've posted bad stuff, then I should just give my camera away! ;^)

I just asked a colleague to choose the objects for me ..... aaahh!

I'm trying to chose things that aren't going to run away,
Large stone (big enough to need both hands to lift with any comfort)
Old book (preferably leather bound)
CD or DVD not in a box.
Have fun - Christopher

That's pretty good! I'll trade with you. I asked my 11 year old daughter, she gave me:
1 - a little shaggy teddy bear with a Christmas outfit on;
2 - a tea candle
3 - a silver/gold judo trophy out of plaster
Oyyyyyyyy!!!!!
Added: I'm thinking I'll ask my older daughter and my husband to give me three objects too, see what they come up with.

I just hope that someone's front door isn't LESS THAN 19 steps away from a gorge ;)
15, 16, 17, .... ahhhhhhhhh....

Mine is. Not a gorge exactly, but a 15 feet stone wall. I'll just have to walk sideways. Backyard is a hill. We just bought a house in West Trail, which is built into the hills on the west side of the Columbia river by Trail, BC. The whole place is connected with these covered staircases, and the roads are narrow and STEEP!!!!

19 steps would be the middle of the street (straight from the front door). If I walk around the house I get to a patch of dirt/weeds (or leftover canola from the farmers field). I may have to include the closeup filter for this test.

Hard Disk crash
Looks like I'll be out of action for a few days, the hard disk just crashed on my main home pc
I have backups of most stuff, probably lost the last 5 days worth of raw images but most of the other raw files are on cd/dvd safe and sound.
The hard disk is still in warranty (by 6 days -woohoo) so the hardware is not a problem. Will need to rebuild the system though. I have a couple of other PC's but my time will be taken up trying to recover the system and data.
Don't think I'll have much time to go out shooting for a day or two though.

So while I'm awaiting delivery of my new disk drive I had chance to get out in the back yard. I managed to rattle off about 30 images in a really enjoyable session. Results on my blog,

Okay, if you haven't seen Ursula's blog yet, you better click here and take a look.
Shock and awe! :-)
(shocked that anything coming out of this study could be so beautiful and in awe at how many gorgeous images she has posted)

Okay, I've been out of it for awhile. Last week I did a wedding and shot over a thousand photos... and it takes awhile to come back up for air after that. (I still have more editing that I want to do there, but I needed a break)
I still didn't get through all of the first exercise. But since I'm behind a bit, I thought I'd jump into exercise 2. And I had the perfect excuse for it too.
I just bought a Canon 2xII extender and I wanted to see what kind of pictures I could get out of my 70-200 2.8 lens. So I threw it on there, and tried to make sure I shot everything at 400mm.
I went out to my back yard, walked a ways in and stopped. And there, within about a 7 foot circle, I shot over 60 pictures. Some are simply repeats at different exposures. And some were outright duds. But I've posted a few that I really liked into my blog.

Thank you all for the comments and kind words. They are much appreciated.
I did the 20 paces thing this evening, and posted results to my blog.
There was a question also about the high-key pictures, and I tried to answer it.
Time to quit for today.

All right, I did the "3 unrelated objects" exercise (quickly and without much enthusiasm, I must add) :)
My daughter gave me these three objects:
The quite mediocre results are posted to my blog.

It's monday again! I realize some (including me, I have out of town company this past week) are falling behind, but others are moving forward and so in order not to hold them back, I present you with Assignment #3. This exercise is meant to be a little more fun, and to allow you to use and test some of your new visualization skills.
Please try to do Assignments 1 and 2 BEFORE doing 3!
Assignment 3: Get Inspired.
Find a picture in the FP book (it can be any part of the book) that inspires you with his vision, creativity, and technique.
Part 1. In your blog, tell us the page # and picture. Describe to us what you like about it, how it makes you feel.
Part 2. Take some pictures using the style or technique or aspects of vision used in the FP shot. Post it in your blog and describe in words what features or parts of the technique you used to produce that picture. Make it as much your own as FP's, but tell us what you started to do and how you learned and changed it.
Don't worry if it's not "great"! I want to do this exercise AGAIN when we finish the book. Actually, I had thought about doing this before we started, but I thought we should at least do a few exercises first. Again, please do #1 and #2 BEFORE #3.
LASTLY: It's important that everyone share each others experiences, so please look at all other members blogs and try to at least leave a comment either about the technique or even one of simple encouragement!

Please be sure and notice that I posted Exercise 3.
Also, I finished exercise 1 by posting the shots I've been taking this week to break some additional rules. See my Blog for details!

Ok. I redid (with a 50mm lens and no extender) Exercise 2 Part 2 (My Backyard). Please check it out and comment in the blog.
Also, as noted by Ursula, most people seemed to have disappeared! Show yourselves and leave a comment! (And do your exercises!)

Got a bit busy with the wife in hospital and the new baby and everything! I will go through the blogs and leave comments at least :)
Keep well. |

Now that's a good reason if I ever heard one! Congratulations on your new baby--and don't worry about our group for a while! Family first.

Well I did do lesson two (part 2) with only a couple of passable results. I will post those on my blog asap. I have lots of excuses and no motivation.

We seem to have lost inertia with many in the group--maybe we are just going too fast. There will thus be no photo exercise next week (I will only be around a little next week anyway).
If you are caught up otherwise, or you want to continue reading, let's read pp 65-102. The next photo assignment will be a week from Monday.
Part 2: Please take time, if you haven't already, and walk through the "chain" of peoples blogs, and let them know what you think. That's why I tried to get a link to everyone in the "chain" to the right of our blogs--so it's easy to quickly go from one blog to another visiting, and commenting!
If we are doing something wrong and that's why we are losing inertia (or I am doing something wrong in the assignments etc.), please feel free to discuss it here.
