I'm in for now. Ready for the next assignment whenever everyone else is set.

However, I may be going to Katrina recovery for work for 30-90 days, in which case I'm expecting the 84 hrs per week will preclude me from participating loyally. But in the meantime, I'm ready to engage again.

Yes - I still think this is a useful thing to contribute to. I've been on vacation, then business trips to India and Hungary, which haven't helped, so I appologise for my slow down.

I'll try to get back upto speed asap as the business trips are over for a month or so.

Ok, still a few of us here. Sorry, I wanted to post this last week, but I've been very busy too!

I did assignment 4 now, but have yet to post mine. Hopefully others have, and I'll be visiting the blogs to comment later tonight (as well as post mine).

Here's the final assignment for this particular book (and then we will start another).

Exercise 5: Now that you've read this book, and your eye has "changed", this is a free study. Submit three pictures to show us your new eye for the world, your new photographic creative freedom. Unlike the other exercises, in which I was encouraging people to post everything--success and failures--post your best three shots. You can fall back on shots you did during the other exercises, or post new ones. The idea is to cap off the book (which you should finish reading, if you haven't), and post your three new gems that without Patterson's inspiration, you would not have captured.

Next Group. If you are interested in the next FPWG, let's take a moment and discuss how we want to do it. There are things I'm sure we did right this time, and things we did wrong. I'm hoping the people still in, and the ones we lost will join in the discussion and give us feedback, so the next one is better.

One consideration: For the next book, I would personally like to do "Photo Impressionism and the Subjective Image". From a separate conversation, I think Ursula would like to do that as well. Any thoughts of agreement and/or disagreement with that?

Ok, I feel very guilty that I haven't been posting or visiting the blogs over the last few weeks--though I have done the assignment. My summer workload lull has officially ended, and I am having more trouble finding time for this. I will try to get to that this weekend.

Yet, I don't want to give up on doing this together with others. Personally, I enjoyed seeing others interpretation of the assignments. Remember though, that this is less a mentorship, as I see it, but a Workgroup, or Community, where we are all peers learning together. I took on the responsibility to come up with assignments mainly to try and keep things together.

I am ready to move on to another book. I think in the beginning we talked about the Photography of Natural Things. I am also interested in going through FP's "Photo Impressionism". I don't think I can start for a week or two, so that would give people time to get a book if they don't have it.

Let me know if you are interested in joining the group and what book you'd like to do. We'll start the list over. We probably won't close it like last time, but I'd still like to have a list of core members, so we can link to each others blogs. That is if we do it using blogs. Did that work for you?

Personally, while I liked the blogs, they do make it feel separate from DPC. And perhaps harder to get to everyone's. You had to follow a lot of links to visit all the photos, and not everyone did. I did like the fact that it left me with my own "journal" of my journey through the book. And of course, posting your bad trials as well as your good trials to DPC would start to fill your portfolio (mine's already quite full), and would leave bad links in the thread when you decided later to delete them!

So I see pluses and minuses to both approaches. Maybe what we need is a hybrid approach; journal everything in your blog, post your "final" best shot for each assignment here? Or something like that.

Summary of questions since this is wordy:

1) Do you want to participate?
2) Which book?
3) What group format (blog, DPC forum, or hybrid) and why?

Plus one more:
4) Should we take turns making the assignments this time?

1) Yes, please
2) 'Photo Impressionism' sounds good to me. I'll have to get a copy
3) Hybrid seems good to me. The DPC forum thread can be used to jog things along and everybody's thoughts can be recorded at length on a blog.

4) I'd prefer others to set the assignments, as I don't really have too much imagination, although I would be prepared to give it a try.

Good to hear from you again, Neil.

I've been quite lax with following this thread of late but would be interested in joining for the next round.

I have the photo impressionism book and have the most interest in that area.

I like the blog format as it keeps the forums uncluttered and easy to follow.

I don't mind helping with the assignments. It will help keep me motivated.

1/ I'd like to participate - do I have to be a member ?
2/ Not very fussed - the photoimpressionism is fun, but any of the books
other than the basic camera intro one would be a pleasure to work through.
3/ anything that works.
4/ If it makes it easier to make forward progress.

Hi there,

1) yes, I would, very much;
2) the one Patterson co-authored with Andre Gallant, but I forget the title right now;
3) I like the blog with occasional postings here at DPC format, it works well, I think;
4) I don't know about taking turns, but different people could make the assignments; I wouldn't mind helping.

10/25/2005 08:59:13 AM · #212

10/25/2005 09:05:18 AM · #213
I'll go for it. Someone pick the book. :)

So
1) Yes
2) I'm good for any of them
3) Hybrid
4) What ever option works.

I think we should use (mentioned below by several of us):

PhotoImpressionism and the Subjective Image - Freeman Patterson and Andre Gallant.

I need a bit of time to get the book. Will order today.

One caveat about this book for those who don't yet have it: while I haven't gone through it systematically yet (waiting for the group), I want to mention that many of the effects are produced by combining multiple images.

I have yet to personally explore this technique with regard to impressionism, so I am interested and don't feel it's a shortcoming. But just so the group is advised that many of the shots you will produce if we use these techniques will not be DPC legal for challenges.

I have experimented with some of the multiple image techniques, specifically different types of montages. I had the pleasure of attending a presentation by André Gallant where he presented his slide montages. He suggested ways of do the same thing digitally.

If anyone is ordering the book and needs a second for free shipping, take a look at:

Freeman Patterson, "The photography of natural thnings"

as well as

Tony Sweet, "Fine Art Nature Photography"

Any other suggestions? I already have Tony's book. BTW, Tony has a class at BetterPhoto that is really good - he goes over a lot of the stuff in Fine Art Nature Photography in that class.

And I don't care if the images are DPChallenge valid or not (I mean, as far as learning).

David Muench's books have been inspiring to me for landscapes--I think you would enjoy them!

Thanks! I'll look into that.

Not concerned about this in the context of DPC rules. I've been exploring
these styles of images using film and digitally already and have some ideas on ways to replicate them digitally too.

Edit: I already have most of the more interesting FP books, so can start whenever.

I'm getting the book tomorrow. Who else do we need to wait on?
