I was getting so frustrated trying to catch that "right" shot I almost submitted this on a "I give up" whim...based on current score I wonder if I should have! ;^)

I almost submitted this one - just because it was so darned hard to get. This hummer was about 100 feet away and darting all over the place, high overhead.

Wow a lot of these outtakes are wonderful! I had a hard time deciding which shot to use...this one was my front-runner but after deciding it was cliché and would suffer from possible anti-Americanism as well, I pulled it and went with something COMPLETELY different. It's doing OK but nothing to set the world on fire. I just thought I'd put it up to share. ;)

Wow - some beautiful shots above. Here are two of my 2nd choices: I hated making this decision - as I had 3 very different shots to choose from.
(I also thought that the thumbnail above was a pair in need of support until I expanded it! LOL)

Here are a couple of my outtakes. I only got about four hours of shooting in this week so I was lucky to get anything at all.

I'd say for four hours, you GOT BUSY! Wow, what an array and variety of subjects you had to choose from! If only we were all so lucky! (That's okay, I bet there are a lot of nasty bugs/insects there too! LOL - Granted, that's small consolation...)

Laurie,
there is nothing American or anti-american about this one except if you'd pick a title that would indicate so (will stop now because it would be commenting on the challenge entries while the vote is still active).
Just wanted to say that there are other countries in this world that have an eagle on the country seal...

I agree with srdanz, the picture should stand on its own merits, and this one does. Would have given it a top 15 in my voting. But don't let that get you down.

Unfortunately, in the DPC world, "should" is a wet-dream.
DPC voters have consistently shown that "American Icon" type photographs, (the bald eagle, flags, red/white/blue themes), will suffer from an anti-american sentiment.. whether we like it or not.
That's just the way the cookie crumbles, and I myself would be wary of putting a bald eagle shot in a challenge.. and I live in Canada!

Maybe someone should have found a Bald Eagle holding a maple leaf splashing into water silhouetted against a liquid orange sky......or skipped it because "they don't like how many bird pictures win".

Maybe a better shot would have been an eagle talking things over with a beaver over Tim Horton's coffee and Krispy Kreme donuts.

Or maybe entered this one. I think it captures reality for bird life. Its a bird eat bird world! Great capture.

I'm not sure that what you perceive represents an anti-American sentiment. My guess is this site is dominated by members from the US even though we have a large international membership. Point is that if the red / white & blue prejudice is there it is because we in the US are tired of it ourselves. Maybe because it has become so politically divisive here. Who knows? But I would not put in on the backs of the rest of the world.
What I do know is that good photos win here. Laurie's eagle was a great shot and would have scored high.

Have a donut and snuggle with a beaver while drinking Tim Horton's coffee.

Here is something I would have given a score of 11 if possible. This was seen at DPC forums already, I just couldn't find it. It is so awesome that I had to record it to revisit at a later time.
