I have just added my 100th photograph to My Favourites. I was just wondering what makes a favourite photograph just that in other peoples minds. For me it is having that certain WOW factor that just leaves you mesmerised looking at a photograph in awe wondering how it was done. Some are in there because of the technique used and of course archery & eagle photographs always rate highly with me :)

I add images that interest me. Images that will assist me with a jab of creativity into my brains. I visit them once in a while. Most of them are about things I would like to do.

I add any image that I know I will want to see again.
It doesn't have to be for the same reason. Sometimes it's that WOw factor that you mentioned, sometimes it's something I can learn from like a photography technique, a post process technique, a composition or lighting.
And sometimes it is because the idea behind a photo just "did it" for me. Either the creativity of the photographer or the thoughts he/she added to it.

I usually reciprocate and choose a favorite from someone who has chosen one of mine. I like many ribbon pictures, and many are my favorites, as are the pictures of my favorite photographers, however including them would create a huge folder. I try to choose fotos that say something to me about a challenge or something that I percieve represents my thoughts or triggered some idea at a given time.

Thus far, I have only one favorite photograph on this site.
The reason is that every time I look at it it makes me smile. :)

sometimes it is the first reaction i get from it, whether it be colour, b and w, tone, technical aspects. Sometimes it is something unusual. Sometimes it is something that moves me. Lots of different reasons really.

I enjoy so many images on here I don't want to save any as favorites for many reasons..so I don't choose fav pics or photographers..also my moods change and one day yours might be my fav and the next I hate it. : )

ΓΆ€ΒΆ An uncommon image (not an uncommon subject], but the way of the image)
ΓΆ€ΒΆ A commotion (not by way of a scene but by the way of the image)
ΓΆ€ΒΆ A stimulating image which adds an experience as opposed to appeasing it
ΓΆ€ΒΆ An image inspiring disscociation while remaining respectful of nature, human and otherwise
ΓΆ€ΒΆ A composition dictated by subject, location and the experience of photographing it (as opposed to by a concept)

If I have the artist as a favorite, I normally don't add their indi photos unless they truely speak to me (librodo, as I'm a portrait guy).

Another reason would be, If the artist themself doesn't 'wow' me but a shot they've done has

Almost anything comical (to me) gets added

Anything that creeps me out (giant horror movie fan)

landscapes have to be REALLY, REALLY awesome

And pretty much any kind of unique portrait/candid

i fav photos that move me, that inspire me, that make me smile, that make me cry, that touch my soul. i fav photographers that do the same. also, it's just a nice way to give the photographer a pat on the back.

There are a few things that make a photograph a 'favorite' for me. However, it's rarely technique that keeps me thinking about a photo. Technique may play a role in a favorite photo, but its generall something else that pulls me in to begin with.

For me, a captivating photograph has a lot of qualities that may or may not be associated with technique. The most important element of a photograph, for me, is whether or not it has any emotive value. The photo has to touch me in some way other than just being a technically excellent photograph. In fact, most of the photos that I like the best don't have much technical merit as far as sharpness, clarity, and perfect lighting are concerned.

For these reasons, simple photographs of still life, product, or landscapes rarely make my own favorites list. It's not to say that they are not well-done, because a lot of them are. They just aren't images that I will remember seeing 5 years from now. Maybe it sorta reminds me of Eric Clapton and David Gilmour, just to name two. These guys have had lasting impressions on me from the first time I heard them. They aren't part of a pop culture and their music has a substance that I go back to over and over.

with such high criteria, i guess it's no wonder that you only have one favorite :)

I have lots of favorites. I just don't maintain a list of them here.

I was just kidding. But seriously, I'd be interested to see your list (that's why I went to check it out), as well as lists of other great photographers on this site

I once maintained a list of favorite photographs here. I recently cleared them all out because I have discovered that my thoughs on great photographs have changed over time. I have only been into photogrpahy for three years now and what I liked in the beginning is not what I like now. My favorites will probably continue to evolve in some way or another. I'm constantly seeing new things that I like. I currently have a great fascination with people. I can see things in people photos that I can't see anywhere else. People naturally 'emote' so it's easy to find that emotive value I'm looking for in those photos...

I add shots to my favorites when I want to study them and learn from them. I don't add 'wow' photos unless I feel I can learn something from them.

I only have a few, but these are the shots I will go back and just enjoy. Especially the once in a lifetime type shots.

I think Jinjit said it best.

Wow factor is often a very fading attribute.

Some of the ones I like the best have not been chosen as a fav by anyone else.

Sometimes I pick a portfolio picture as a fav and then the person does not renew their membership. Then I have only the thumbnail to remember it. :(

If you look for them you will find many hidden gems among the photos here that haven't gotten much attention.
