OK - so I accept my poor score as I apparently pushed some buttons with this shot, but c'mon - it was hardly as offensive as some people made it out to be, was it?

I don't think it's necessarily offensive. The joke is a bit weak! Sorry! :P

Maybe if the joke had something more to do with death etc....

(I can't really talk about weak jokes. My title was "Sunset Ghouleyard", meant to rhyme with Boulevard. I don't think anyone noticed.)

Trust me - as a guy who LOVES bad jokes and puns, their is little room for combining such with a high score.

Sometimes though, the low score is worth it.

I was one that loved it I gave you a 8. I was trying to come up with something different for this challenge but couldn't do it, thats why I liked your comical take on the challenge so much.

Maybe it would make an interesting future challenge to portray a joke or make someone laugh with your photo. It wouldn't be easy.

I wouldn't say that's "humorous" per se.. it's definitly not a bad pun. Oh.. and it's dodged and burned to a crisp. (which *is* a bad pun)

Hey Artyste,

I just "got" your signature line joke:

"How do you shoot that one-of-a-kind photograph? Unique up on it!"
hehehe

I had another version that was a better composition, but it turned out to be pretty blurry, so I didn't submit it:

I think the spilled salt shaker is more graphically interesting than the Morton Salt container. Something was conspiring against me though because, after seeing the out of focus image, I went back to reshoot (with a tripod this time), but it had just rained and the headstone was splotched with dark spots where the water had pooled up. oh well.

I also went to a pet cemetery and got this one:

How'd you like to be the guy whose job it is to carve this into a stone for all eternity? :)

Your image is well composed, has a decent perspective, utilizes DOF well and has high technical merit. The amount of focused gravestone in the foreground adds to the quality of the composition.

Technically it is a much better image than your score indicates.

What's interesting is that for the most part commenters appeared to recognize the humor and their comments were generally positive, yet their average score was still LESS than your overall average. Apparently you were not being penalized for using humor, you were penalized because it wasn't funny enough. :)

Based on the comments you got during the challenge, it looks like humor was not well received. Not sure why. As I mentioned in my comments on your photo, I think it would have done better with the focus on the gravestone. My humorous version (outtake) here:
- I think this would've done better than the one I entered, but who knows.

Regarding the glamour shot - it was a great photo, but I thought it was not really appropriate for the challenge. Not because of a respect for the dead or anything like that, but because most everything good about that shot (model, sky) is there in spite of the cemetery. The cemetery is incidental - imo, of course. To me it is like if you are a an expert at taking glamour shots (beach shots, sunsets, landscapes, etc) and you just keep taking those kinds of shots and then put whatever the challenge subject is in the scene to qualify.

I figured that an attempt at humor for that challenge might be a bit of a risk. My results seemed to bear that out.

Yes, I found out where a unique perspective will get you in a challenge... one of my worst finishes ever! So, a pretty decent photo, just OTB (Outside the box). Oh well, I was please with the shot:)

Salt & Pepper, funny, very funny:) Just not very reverent, which bothers some people. Heck, it bother most of us, sooner or later, it just depends on what the subject is:)

Anyhow, nice photo Dave.

David, as I said in my comments, I applaud you for your sense of humor.

Our world needs more smiling faces, and your shot did just that for me.

Awesome! A perfect thread in which to discuss my photo and it's awful title:

Got Fries?

There is actually more to this title than the horribly corny (and some said disrespectful) meaning.

Let me begin my explaination by sharing one of my outtakes:

Alright...now that you have seen that...

This cemetery is in a State Park, one of the largest wooded areas in my community. During the winter the deer are very hungry. The cemetery was their favorite place to go as there was an abundant supply of delicious flowers.

People, however, thought that the deer were being disrespectful by eating flowers meant to please dead people so they started decorating with plastic flowers instead. As you can see by the photo, the poor animals were slow learners. There are a lot of plastic flowers with chunks bitten out of them and you see a lot of them chewing on more realistic yet just as plastic flowers.

Whenever I go to the cemetery, or the park in general, I bring food for them. This time, I had just been to McDonalds, so I was luring them in closer for a better shot, coaxing them with yes, you guessed it, fries. That's why he's looking at me like that.

I didn't even notice the name Fries until I got home and started editing my photos. It was such a marvelous coincidence that I had to title it the way I did, even though I knew some people wouldn't understand it and find it tasteless.

I can assure you the fries were very tastefull. Nothing like grease and salt for growing wildlife. :)

Thanks for the comments on my photo, both good and bad.

On second thought, I should have titled it "Visiting with Fries"

You might have broken a 6 without that title.
04/04/2005 01:14:11 PM · #24
...hindsight

Oh yeah. dsa, i gave you a 6.
great photo.

(didn't mean to steal your thread with such a long post)

I can't believe how right in the middle my shot ended up.
0 1's
0 2's
0 3's
30 4's
86 5'5
48 6's
12 7's
8 8's
0 9's
0 10's

I was quite happy with my shot. Expected it to finish on this score or a little higher. Didn't expect to get no 1,2 or 3s. How strange, never happened to me before.
