Welp, it's official... he passed away today.

My brother, who is a photographer for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, headed off to Rome to cover the story yesterday. I'll try to post some of his pictures here when they start coming in...

Just watching it now on the news. Certainly a lot of upset faces in the crowd.

The strange thing is, cnn doesn't have anything yet on the website.

CNN is a bit behind the times then. MSN has it on their website. I am watching it on their CNN channel now. We may be a morbid bunch but I'm watching it from a photographer's perspective, look at the photo opportunities!

Second death watch this week - next week it will take more to hold our interest.

That said, sad day for catholics.

There's good reason that cable news networks are slow...they've been embarassed before (remember those elections a few years back) and have taken precautions since.

And for the rest of mankind too. We mourn as one. That's how he would have wanted it, and he earned it.

I'm not catholic and don't know much about him, but it's a tragedy when anyone dies. I guess he was a pretty religious man and a symbol for those who are catholic. My condolences to his family, friends, and fans.

dont have to be Catholic... personally i didnt agree with him when he spoke against contraceptives (and sex before marriage) :P

everything else he did brought everyone together... look at the long article on his life on yahoo... not sure of the source, but its pretty good in outlining the most important stuff he did...

whats pretty crazy is that he (publicly) went into a mosque (Islamic house of worship) and prayed at the west wall (holiest Jewish place)... pretty crazy stuff for any Catholic/Christian... even more people liked him after that, no matter what religion they were... he even helped bring down communism in eastern europe

Catholics believe that catholocism/christianity is an extension of Judiasm....fullfilment of the prophecy.....Judiasm is the foundation/roots of christianity. I'm catholic as well :)

I fail to see death of old age as a tragety. Death on those terms should be thought of as a reward for any true Christian.

Link to the Vatican for anyone interested:

Vatican Link

A visit to this link at the Vatican site yielded an interesting document regarding the process and rules for electing a new Pope.
