I don't know about the smoke thing when they die, but they do release smoke when the next one is sellected, as after all the cardinals have voted and the new Pope is chosen, they burn the ballots before leaving the room. So when they are picking the new Pope, everyone looks for the smoke.

For those who believe in prayer, now is the time to pray for the vatican. When the pope does pass on, they will have the task of finding a new one that will do as good a job.

You are confusing the death of the Pope with the proclamation of a new Pope. When 2/3 of the cardinals agree upon the name of a new Pope, they burn their votation papers and black fume comes out ... if they dont agree upon a name they burn hay and white fume comes out. But all this won't be after several days after the funeral.

Thanks for the correction. As I said, I was dating myself and couldn't remember the exact circumstances. I stand corrected.

Watch the Godfather pt. 3. It shows the process of electing a new pope. Oh the corruption!

Glad I could help, everything is very confusing right now.

By the way Scalvert, it seems you are going to be there while the new Pope is elected. Good timing I would say, if you have already made your reservations.

They're are conflicting reports, apparently the Vatican is denying reports that he has passed, regardless it seems to be only a matter of time, I am guessing there will be news by the end of the day.

Remember The Godfather pt 3 is fiction.

Yes, I would say the Godfather part 3 is probably not the best place to gather facts about Vatican law and the electing of a new Pope

Does anyone think it's a little irresponsible to accuse the Vatican of a corrput process of electing a Pope based on the Godfather movies?

Especially when that Pope was elected against large odds. A very passionate man who came from Krakow, Poland. But some people will believe anything the media tells them. Thats the way this world works.

Quite.

I think they did a pretty darn good job last time.

I lived in Rome. The story of the poisoned pope and re-election of a new pope was told to me by my relatives when I was young, way before that movie even came out.

Check out the following link for the details on how a modern Pope is elected.
Electing a Pope

ELECTING A POPE
1. The Pope dies or the Apostolic See falls vacant. Note: Normally, this is when the Pope dies, but not necessarily so. The Pope can of his own volition vacate the Apostolic See (eg. step down from his office of Pope).
2. The Cardinal Camerlengo verifies the death and authorizes a death certificate, notifying the public through the Cardinal Vicar for the Diocese of Rome.
3. The 9 Days of Mourning (novemdieles) begin.
4. 120 Cardinals gather from around the world.
5. 12-20 days after the death/vacancy, the Cardinal Electors enter the Conclave to choose which of them will emerge as Holy Roman Pontiff.
6. The election process for the new Pope requires a two-thirds majority. If after 30 elections, the Cardinal Electors still have not gained a two-thirds majority, they may then elect by simple majority. They cast their votes on the afternoon of the first day, and twice in the morning and once in the afternoon. They will sometimes devote a day to prayer during voting. During voting, there is no contact with the outside world allowed.
7. Once the Pope is elected, he chooses a new name, the rest of the Cardinals pledge their support, the Dean of the College of Cardinals steps onto the main balcony of the Vatican and declares to the world, "Habemus Papam!", "We have a Pope!. The newly elected Pope appears on the Balcony and delivers his Apostolic Blessing. During the voting days, white smoke from the Vatican means a new Pope has been elected. Black smoke means the voting is still underway.
8. A formal inaugural ceremony takes place, then the Cardinals return home, and the newly elected Pope, in his role as "Servus Servorum Dei", or 'Servant of the servants of God' begins his life and service as Pope.

Just a reminder people - keep your posts on topic and don't get into a religious rant - that's what the 'rant' area is for :o)
