Man, why do I suck so much. I don't get why it's so hard for me to get over a 5.
03/28/2005 02:56:25 AM · #29
I thought I had a really kick butt shot...but that not what others apparently think. I'm only in the mid 5's with no comments. Not even a "You suck cause I'm a stick-in-the-mud" this time. I guess it's kind of early still. I wonder if the lens flare that I captured is turning people off? I thought that it would be one of those "exceptions to the rule." I still think it is regardless.

TG73: Commenting (with a thoughtful, intelligent comment) takes quite a bit longer if you do it for every one. I try to do it for 1/2 of the ones I look at--but it's rare that I do that many. It's just time consuming. When I comment, I try to point out what I like about a shot first. It helps to soften the blow when I then tell the photogarpher what I don't like quite as much about the photo. I try to say/write things in a way that is likely to hurt the least. I therefore choose my wording VERY carefully. It's one of those "golden rule" scenarios: I write about others shots as I would like to have mine written about. It takes me anywhere from one minute to several. Here's a couple of fictitious ones I made up:

A minute:

"I LOVE this shot! The colors are awesome and I like the title, too. It's just a hair too dark, though--at least to my amateur eye. Nice work!"

Several minutes:

"I think the colors in this shot are really neat. I like the way the shadow play into this, too. However, at certain places I feel like it might be a little too dark. I'm no expert, and I wasn't there, so I don't know what you had to work with in terms of lighting capability, but that's how I perceive it. If you get a few other comments along the same line, that's probably an indicator to that effect--but then, I might be the only one! Again, though, I really do like this shot!"

I might then edit a comment down to the essence of it keep it short and "potent." I try to avoid writing novels for comments--that is a little rude to make some one read, rather that the shortened version, in my opinion.

I never tell someone what score I gave them. 5's an average shot--dcent in most of the technical aspects, but it just fails to interest me enough for a higher score. 7 is the "Yeah, buddy, keep it up!" score. I like the shot, but there's just some minor things that keep it from getting a higher score. 9 is my "Whoa" Jaw on the floor score. I've only given out a single 10 before--Zoomdak's 'Adrift' with his Dad on the bed at the beach. Actually, I might have given another one out also, but I can't remember who/when.

So, the condensed version of all that is: I put a lot of effort and time into my responses and just get drained after doing the first bunch. I then only comment on ones that really strike me for some reason.

I understand that commenting can take up time. But for people who are trying to learn how to do this well, a low score and no comments as to why just doesn't help much.

I say something for each, even if it's just "nice shot".

I´ve got these two comments:
#1 Nice composition, colors, focus and lighting. But I'm not sure how it meets the challenge.

#2 This is a very interesting take on the challenge, I am not sure how it will be judged by DPC community. I like the idea and the composition. Good job (10)

and that, of course, explains my score:

I knew some ppl would not get the idea, but I like the photo, and I've alread got positive comments about the photo itself, so I'm content.

Wow I'm so glad I didn't enter in this challenge the entries are great in my book.

I always like to vote on challenges that I didn't enter but this one seems to be far better then I expected, well done to all those that entered.

I went to the cemetary on Saturday, and drove around (this place was huge) I couldn't get out and take a picture though...don't know why.

Wonder if we can put in a request for no update button. Up......Down......Up.........Down. I try to stay away from it but it is just to desireable. Try not to look, try not to look. Dammit I hit the update button again.

I agree =) I am using the excel chart posted by 4score and it's driving me crazy seeing scores of 6 and 7 then a 4 following that. At least I have three wonderful comments that make my efforts worth it. I really was going for an emotional appeal and I am glad that my photo is touching some people. Last night I had a 6.57 when I finally went to sleep and woke up to a 5.64.

Yes, I mentioned it in another forum. On one headstone I saw an upside down pentagram between the first and last name. That stopped me for a moment.

You can turn it off if you go to My Preferences. I'm going there right now myself.

I ask this question myself. I really enjoy my cemetary entry but alas no one here seems to think it's good. I guess there are no fans of horror and creepyness around here..

I'm stuck at 5.1

Went to bed last night without looking so I'm not sure what it was then.
I wish people would stop being so judgemental and start looking at photography.
