I'd like to get a general overview on what people think of the images in my gallery. I'd really appreciate a little feedback. Since nobody else has a "critique please!" topic up yet this morning... Carolle's Photography
Thanks a lot guys. |

I like the flower photos. Really pretty. I'll try to come back and elaborate, but my 2 year old son has some funky pneumonia. The meds are only succeeding in making his sleep better, docs said if he's not better to take him to the ER. Grrr. I'm also trying to get my commenting on the challenge done while he's sleeping. So, if we're not waiting in the ER for 6 hours today, I'll try to come back. ~Heather~ |

Sorry to hear he's so sick. Waiting in the ER is annoying but necessary at times... I remember one Christmas day I ate shrimp not knowing how allergic i was to the stuff..... Half the day in the hospital and a swollen face. Fun.
Hope he's feeling better soon!!! |

"One Wall" and "Neat house" are my favorites... did you have the opportunity to shoot alot of this? I'd be interested in the different angles you shot... It's a great subject... The flower shots are great too, but I'm not a big flower fan, so I'm not the best judge...

Thanks a lot guys.
Carolle,
you have some bright, bold well taken shots there. They all look technically well executed, sharp, in focus and well done all round. I really like the flower under glass/ water-drop shot too.
It might be worth looking into composition a bit more, as most of the images seem to be very 'centrally' shot with the subject right in the middle of the frame - maybe something to consider some more ?
Also some different angles might make that single wall look really dramatic ?

That house idea would have been terrific for the Something Old challenge. Is that house close to you? It's a terrific subject. It seems as if it was taken in winter since there are few leaves on the tree in the foreground and none on those in the background. It might be an even more ironic photo if taken now while the trees are lush - you'd have the life of the tree against the past life of the house itself.
I'm not quite satisfied with what the two photos does for the house, although I definitely see what you were going for. They are very much like photos I would want to take if I came across this remnant. Are they they only two you took during that session, or are these two just your favorites?
I definitely think you need at lease one of the facades and the tree - or enough of the tree to make it obvious that it's growing where the house used to be. If possible, I might try to capture in the photo some of the detail of the texture of the remaining facade - old houses always have such great texture. This is almost there in ONEWALL.JPG, but the focus is on the tree instead of the house. I think I'd reverse that.
I think ONEWALL is the stronger of the two photos, so I'll focus on that one. Things I like:
1) Lighting. Although I think this might be tweaked a bit, I like the strong shadows the sun created with the facade. 2) The field in the background. That red growth is GREAT against the green of the field. What IS that? I like it it adds interest to the background. 3) The subject. There is so much potential there for a great photo.
Things that distract/bother me: 1) The logs in the foreground distract me; I don't think you could really crop around them; although I'd experiement with it. Perhaps if it were cropped or framed in such a way that they were very much in the lower right corner, I might think they added something rather than distracting. In a darkroom, I'd burn them in a good three seconds longer while dodging the rest of the photo. I'm not good enough with photoshop to know the equivalent. 2) Is that your tripod behind the logs? 3) I'd like it framed with the facade a bit more to the right of the photo. I toyed with this and was able to crop it to something I found more to my liking at 427x640. I tried 480x640, but I couldn't get rid of the tripod that way.
General ideas: 1) I thought it might be interesting to shoot into the window -- but that could go either way. Of course, only if you still have access to the house. 2) I might toy with black and white here, or maybe even sepia. I toyed at this a bit in photoshop and was not happy with the results, but perhaps you're better there than I am. Admittedly, I'm no hand for PS. 3) A sunset behind would add good subtext - the sun going down on the past. Again, only if you still have access to the house.
Okay, this post is beyond long. Take what's helpful; ignore the rest. If you continue to work with these two photos, I'd love to see your results.

BigSmiles your still life was excellent, landscaping seem too me a little on the dark side. Maybe you wanted the landscaping dark for the shadows or whatever? Maybe you could have tried landscaping in black and white for I believe that would have been perfect for the bare trees and the standing foundation. You do good work keep it up. Bob

I submitted the old house with trees growing in it for the Free Challenge. The reason there are no leaves around is because this part of northern ontario got ambushed by caterpillars this spring and there weren't many leaves on any of the trees.
This house is on Manitoulin Island.. about 2 hours away from where my parents live (I'm only here for the summer). That red stuff growing in the background grows all over this particular island and I have NO idea what it is.
That thing that looks like a tripod... dont know what that is neither. It almost looks like an old water pump or something. I couldn't get as close to the house as I would have liked to because there is barbed wire separating that field from the road (boooo)
I've also updated the gallery to include another shot of the house with silhouetted walls. I'm pretty confident the house will still be there next summer when I go back... since I'm going back to school next week I wont have time to go back this season.
Perhaps it would look interesting covered in snow? Be interesting to get a shot with the tree covered in leaves. Hopefully next season we wont have caterpillars! |

BigSmiles, I just checked out your submissions, which usually I'd have done before commenting. I just wanted to say that I REALLY like "Waterfront Home. Needs Work." The framing is excellent and the photo really says something. I wasn't a member during that challenge so I couldn't comment then. I could have said this on the photo's own comments page, but I don't think many people go back looking for comments on their old photos. I just wanted to compliment the photo and make sure you saw it. Also, the title is a riot! Extra points for a sense of humor. LOL
