I would like to know what kind of features or accessories you wish were available for cameras. I'll start:

I wish I could use the flash or other light on a camera to continuously light a close subject when I am using the burst mode. Currently the flash is unavailable because of the recycle time required. But a less powerful but broad lamp that remained on for the second or two would be useful.

It would be nice to have a focus bracketing feature similar to exposure bracketing. It would slightly focus more or less around your focussing distance. It could eliminate some blurry photos.

Your turn.

A screw-in shutter release adapter to fit most digital cameras. One that didn't look like a plumbers nightmare.

A trailing-edge flash would be good I imagine. When you combine flash with long exposure the flash fires at the beginning. If objects are moving their initial position is highlighted, rather than their end position. I imagine the opposite would be more useful for moving objects.

Digital grid lines on the display / view finder (as available on some newer cameras)... Such a simple feature but so beneficial, especially when learning.

And, similar to Digipixer... A shutter release for my Coolpix for under $100 - some of the new coolpix's have a plug so you can wire your own but the CP995 is a serial / usb interface, not a simple switch.

Actually, I think the newer Canon's have focus bracketting. Based on my experiences with mine, they need it. I agree with sparky mark about the gridlines, my old camera (fuji fp1400) had them, but my new one doesn't. I miss the feature, especially when trying to frame something horizontal

A built in automatic full size tripod that folds up into the camera. :)

Bring it on. And while you're at it, how about a full size flash that also retracts back inside the camera (which should be no larger than my CP995 still).

Alternatively I'll settle for a tripod that's easy to carry around when you're trying to do more with your day than just take photos.

I'm not sure if this exists on certain cameras or not but I haven't seen it.

An option to not advance the frame/film. So that each shot would overlay the last. Like combining an open shutter with an external manual shutter. I think it would enable some nice well controlled overlays. Maybe an option to open and close the shutter at an interval, which if aimed at stars for example would yeld dotted lines as the stars were recorded, then not.

Ok, I wrote that clearer then clicked a link and lost it and now can't seem to make it make sense. I hope it makes sense to someone. :)

a 2-20gig hard drive. EASY quick controls of ISO speed (and high iso #s with LOW noise (6400iso) :)). image stabilization ;). a better nightvision system than the one on the 707. ummm.. rapid fire mode, but continuous, no waiting after 3 or 5 images for it to write off of the buffer. write straight to the card. that would be AWESOME.

I think if a camera had photoshop image editor software installed we could just do without our computers, of course we would need a bit bigger screen on the back...

Open, patent unencumbered, standards. Just picked up an S2 Pro, and the CCD-RAW format looks like it requires thier 'Hypercheesy' utility to use it.

I hate having to go the 'media player' route, with 3 different players for the 3 different formats (real, quicktime and M$).

At least the rather nasty jpeg2 was stillborn.

As for hardware, the rotating lens on the Coolpix 990 is just brilliant, and the 2cm macro is really good too.

A fast wireless closerange encrypted transmission (not the slow bluetooth stuff) to a storage pack that you can wear on your body. 20Gig drive, 256mb/512mb buffer and picture processing in the storage pack. The camera should take the photo's and be able to sent them straight to the storage pack. That would allow very high framerates and much lower powerconsumption in the camera. The storage pack could sent back smaller review images to a small camera buffer so you can check exposure etc.
I wouldn't even care if it was not wireless but by cable.

The fast iso change, gridlines, not advance film are already available on the S602Z.

Besides an x-ray vision lens, I like the idea of some sort of wireless Internet transmission. I'm sure that something along these lines is already in existence somewhere. But imagine being on vacation, snapping a photo, and e-mailing it to your friends (along with GPS encoded information so they could see where you are on a map) directly from the camera without even heading to the hotel.

The most practical application would be news photographers who would want to quickly transmit their shots back to the publication.

You can do that with mobile phones now... just gotta wait for the cameras inside the phones to get better.

I simply want my Sony Mavica FD-91 revamped as is but with a much higher image resolution. 14x optical zoom, nice Carl Zeiss lenses, image stabilization (mandatory with that zoom), digital viewfinder and digital screen on the back, etc etc etc. I love the camera and love it's capabilities and did love the save to floppy -- but I wish they'd make that camera all over again with a bigger chip....

I wish there were wireless way to beam my images from my camera directly into my laptop while on the go. Imagine, out in the field 2 miles from your car where the laptop is and you never have to worry about running out of space on your CF card because every image you take is eventually being transmitted back to your laptop. I imagine the file would first be captured to something like CF and then transmitted at which time ONLY if the image was successfully transferred to the laptop the image would be removed from the camera. Also, the ability for the camera to review the images from the laptop. Similar to RAW, I guess there would have to be a small thumb nail generated on the laptop for the camera to re-access.

Should I really be telling you all this? Maybe I should go out and paten this? :-)

Anyway... I have wished for this on more than one occasion. :-)

A camera which doesn't break if you drop it. Built-in waterproof construction. Icons a different color than the material into which they're embossed, and larger than 30 microns across.

Not for me, but how about one constructed with left-handed controls...

I want a camera that takes good pictures for me. I don't even have to do anything. I just think of a nice scene. And the camera does all the dirty work. AND THE DISHES! (if there are any in the photo). I hate washing dishes.

Embedded wireless access - upload the images on the fly to a hardrive at home using GPRS/ Edge type data services (on its way real soon now- the phone tech is already ready to be embedded like this)

Perhaps Bluetooth for cheaper/ closer connectivity to download to a laptop at 11Mb/s rather than USB rates

ISO bracketing used for aperture/ shutter speed priority modes, so that the ISO would vary automatically to adjust the exposure

Built in GPS position recording, so that you know where the picture was taken - add it to the EXIF

Better metering so that it would expose for the right thing every time, even in difficult situations.

Higher dynamic range on the sensors, for the same reason.

Much lower power so you don't need to worry about battery chargers.

Multiple exposure modes, like on a film camera.

Orientation sensors as default so that the pictures get rotated correctly for portrait mode (some cameras do this it would be nifty!)

JPEG2000 support for better compression

Voice annotation/ notes

The sony 707/717 have the voice annotation but I havnt tried it yet.

A DOF preview option would be nice.
